This movie wasn't the greatest but frankly it was fun to watch, IMO. I'd like to point out that Itchy and Scratchy can be made funny without the blood and gore. It's called Tom and Jerry.
@scifinerd17
@scifinerd17 9 жыл бұрын
The problem with that is Tom and Jerry has already been done. Itchy and Scratchy was suppose to have something in it to differentiate it from Tom and Jerry, and that's where the violence and gore comes in.

***** I think it would be nice if it had some gore in it or just more deaths but I agree as it is still a goofy, stupid movie that is just fun to watch. Jonny Cage alone makes it worthwhile - and the "effects".

***** The keyword for this movie is PG-13, This is the studio that brought us, Nightmare on Elm Street. If it was rated R, then it would be in league with Freddy. Remember the target audience was teens and kids. More profit in PG-13 than R. Best thing coming from the movie is the music which released in two soundtracks. A year before Mortal Kombat was release, a scene from Dumb and Dumber where LLoyd does a Kano fatality to the Chef in a dream sequence.

***** The movie was fun and had a great atmosphere because of the director who was always pretty good at it. Actually I didn't mind the absence of gore, at least I could see it in the cinema when I was 13 :D Still, I'd prefer it the characters looked more like those in the game.

Even though I agree that Mortal Kombat should've been R rated in order to better reflect the original material, no one would've been able to make it an R rated movie in that time period. Very few adults played video games back then, and no matter what the film was rated, it would've been primarily kids that would've wanted to see the film. So because of that, no production company would've signed off on an R-rated version.

I'd like to share a bit from the "Dethroning Moment of Suck" page of the That Guy With the Glasses section of TV Tropes, courtesy of Kevin Klawitter. *_In his reviews of the Mortal Kombat movies, he completely ignores two important subplots in the first movie. Now, this might seem reasonable if it were simply for brevity's sake, but then he claims their absence to be plot holes. One of these subplots involves Shang Tsung killing Liu Kang's little brother. This is the reason Liu Kang enters the tournament; he wants revenge. This plot point is made incredibly obvious by the second act, and even comes back in the end. But why does the Critic say he entered the tournament? "Because he's... Asian". There's no way the critic could not have known Liu Kang's motives, but yet, he still ignored them so he could make a race-based joke._* Has anyone ever called Doug out on this?

1. It wasn't PG13, it was a 15 2. Christopher Lambert was great as Raiden and had one of the best lines in movie history. 3. Kano never use to look like that before that film. The game literally adopted that look and the way he talk in to future games becuase they liked it so much. 4. Cast was actually really good but it WAS a B movie.

I find more and more that people are disliking the stories in Mortal Kombat. Most people did not like the Konquest or Story Modes in the games and just want more violence and fatalities. These guys, while I respect them, just want violence and no story. You can't have unmotivated violence, you need a story first. And the Mortal Kombat games all have stories to them that are more important than the violence or the many ways to kill a person. I liked the first film because it had an interesting story and was fun. The 2nd film had no story or a plot that made sense and it was bad. I just think that people need to realize that character comes before action. You had to create the character of Scorpion and Sub-Zero BEFORE you gave them fatalities.

Rickey Layman The story mode in the last two games have been praised by most people who played it.
@Sharikacat
@Sharikacat 9 жыл бұрын
Rickey Layman The early games relied on gorey visuals rather than a story, and that was normal for the time. Gamers didn't need a story for a fighting game, and that's why the movies largely failed- trying to paste a story together for a script. Netherrealm Studios, however, when they created MK9, made a very good story mode. They then made a FANTASTIC story for MKX. At this point, the gore is more of a glorified tradition rather than a way to sell the game. Overall, the MK movie was the best of it's time. The characters looked fairly close to the game, the fighting was passable, and the central plotline held to the game. It's still a bad movie, but it seems like an honest attempt to make a fighting game into a servicable movie.
@jp3813
@jp3813 9 жыл бұрын
***** They're speaking in the context of the original games back in the 90's since those were what the movie is based on. People played MK for the blood and gore, not the barely written story at that point. With all due respect, the logic that gameplay entertains you for an hour while the story keeps you interested is perhaps the most backwards description of the video game medium ever claimed by anyone. I'm sure you can find exceptions, but the medium and its consumers in general simply don't see it that way. I suggest you go watch the new Mad Max movie in theaters right now. Its entire plot is basically a video game escort mission. Meaning the protagonists just have to get from point A to point B while avoiding bad guys. Paper-thin story, yet it's being widely hailed by critics and audiences as one of the greatest action movies of all time with no exaggeration. Who knows what George Miller could've made out of MK?
@jp3813
@jp3813 9 жыл бұрын
***** The characters are iconic, yes. But that's due to their gameplay. To this day, the titles you named aren't known for their stories. The new Mad Max is actually a reboot. The director did this so that new viewers don't have to do any homework just to see it. Hence, it provides you w/ everything you need. But if you're intrigued to see at least one of the previous films, I'd only recommend Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, as that was everyone's favorite prior to the new one. The first film is a very low-budget revenge movie, and the third garnered a mixed reception from fans (though it has a great theme song by Tina Turner).
@Sharikacat
@Sharikacat 9 жыл бұрын
Gameplay is one of the most important features in any game. If you have a fantastic story but crappy gameplay, then maybe you'll find a weird cult appreciation ten years later. In fighting games, gameplay is everything. The fighting game community can keep a good game alive for years and years. Marvel vs Capcom 2 had a 10-year run and had no story whatsoever. Mario 64 had groundbreaking gameplay and is still enjoyed to this day because of it yet has no more story than any other Mario game.

PaulXPZ The MK developers have taken a lot of cues from the first movie. Cage was always a hammy, cocky fighter, but Linden Ashby probably influenced how much of a smart ass he would become. And Sonya in the Neatherrealm games looks a lot like her movie actress (albeit with a bigger bust).

Well the difference between an Itchy And Scratchy cartoon vs Mortal Kombat is Mortal Kombat actually has a story, a very basic easy to follow story...but It's there. I&S has NO story, they just kill each other. I think thats where you guys don't seem to understand thats why MK fans like this it had decent fights, cool costumes, kick ass soundtrack and great effects they did a great job bringing a game to the screen. I think if they had a do over for it I would suggest adding a little more gore to keep people like you guys happy who want to see some of that come to the big screen, but I would only suggest adding a little as to not be distracting from the story.

@FernieCanto 9 жыл бұрын
MJPriseCenter "There only 3 things that count in a movie, and the spirit of the source material is secondary." It depends. An adaptation either "creates its own thing" or services the source material. The Mortal Kombat movie tries to do the latter thing, and that's why it fails. It didn't have either the ambition or the chops to stand on its own; it was only trying to service the kids (like me) who wanted to see the video-game action and violence on the screen, and it didn't deliver. I think you can even credit Street Fighter with trying to "create its own thing", but it's so awful that it doesn't even count.

I actually have respect for Paul Anderson with this movie, since he purposely avoided making it as gory as the games. Instead, he was very wise to place the actual story first, because that matters a whole lot more in a feature film. If people just wanted to see heads roll and torsos blown up, they'd stay home with the games. The sequel film was much closer to the games' tone, with tons of over-the-top craziness...and people fled like the plague. How do you guys respond to that?

everyone keeps saying "story doesn't matter in fighting games, MK's plot is weak, etc", and I really don't agree. the fact is, unlike the Walker brothers here, what sucked me into MK was not the gore, it was the plot. and it was excellent, especially for its genre, it was unique, by MK2 there was a universe where all the characters were distinct if not in the look, but in the backstory and motivation (all that died after MK4, but the original trilogy is still great) and none seemed out of place (unlike Tekken imo). sure, the only way to write an MK movie is to write it as a B-movie (look at story-modes of MK9 and MKX, great examples of that). you either go over the top, or you go hyper-realistic, like MK Legacy1 tried to, and that can also be a lot of fun. but I don't get when people dismiss the rich lore of MK and say "gimme gore, gimme fatalities, they're the only thing that matters!" now, and even back then, in 1995, there was no way to incorporate so many characters and stories into 1 movie (they tried - we got Annihilation), that's why I see MK on screen only as a trilogy of movies, or as a series. here's to hoping that one day this new MK movie that K. Tancharoen wrote will be made, and we'll get the MK movie this franchise deserves.

Regarding the games, MK has gone to a point when it's more a cartoon than... well... Mortal Kombat, if you know what I mean. MKX had the capability of modern technology to look pretty realistic but they pretty much threw it away. MK's trademark, besides the gore, of course, was also that it wanted to look more realistic as opposed to cartoony Street Fighter.

I loved Mortal Kombat. I don't think the critics know what they want. In the other review he complains about how formulaic the movie gets towards the end. "Fight scene Raiden talks, fight scene Raiden talks, fight scene Raiden talks..." and here they say "oh just give us 12 cage matches and we'd be fine with that." I agree some more gore would have been nice but that would have seriously cut back on who would have been able to see the movie. Let's face it, your target audience for it was a great many video game playing kids, and the demographic for video game players back there was a much younger age. It had good CGI for it's time, a passable story, and a lot of action sequences, and that's what you kind of expected going into the movie. It was pretty damned good.

I liked the movie back then because the only movie based on a videogame that was more or less faithful to the game's story. And MK had a complex story for a 90's fighting game (apart from KOF). But it didn't age well. NOW Annihilation was a disaster!

As a huge fan of MK games, I still consider this movie to be quite good. Fatalities, blood and gore are great, but I never really focused on them while playing, they were a fun addition. The movie lacked this addition, yet it had some good atmosphere, really cool soundtrack, the story was alright and faithful to the source material. Also, kudos to them for not screwing up the character designs! Everyone is easily recognizible, they wear the same / very similar costumes and act as you'd expect them to based on the games. They could've used some random guy, dress him up in a jacket with a scorpion image on his back and say: "This is Scorpion!", but no, they actually tried and did good in my opinion. As to what's important in the games... I cared more about which character to select, what moves to try out, how to beat the boss, what's the story behind all this, etc. I remember playing Ultimate MK3, and I actually wanted to know what happens to my character in the end, I wanted to unlock the emperor's treasures and see the bonuses, and later on, I was legitimately interested in the story of MK4. So, I guess it's different for everybody, but please don't think that blood and gore is ALL that matters in a MK game. You simply can't have a good MK game if you replace / take away everything but blood and gore, it won't feel or play the same no matter how much blood is splattered across your screen.

Wow. Just wow. I idolize these 2 (and James Rolfe) but I've NEVER EVER had as opposite an opinion of a movie as this one. I know they say that they like to let people like what they like but you guys were a little harsh toward the fans of this movie. Just let us like it. Rob proved that they don't get it. He say he has a personal vendetta against this movie. That might mean that he's kind of biased. I love you Rob, but calm down. They acted like the movie was REALLY offensive and people defend it. It's a harmless fun movie. To me, this movie is one of the only good examples of a good video game movie adaptation. All the actors were perfect for their roles. How could he not like one actor? Not all of them may have been the greatest actors but they got the job done. They were all defined characters with personalities. It may have been PG-13 (just so the teens could see it, who were the majority of the demographic for the games), but as long as the fights were good, AND THEY WERE. The sets were great. Rob is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY too hard on this movie. It wasn't trying to be a masterpiece. It was just trying to give fans the same feeling that the original Ninja Turtles movie gave that fanbase. If they don't like it fine (I wouldn't have treated Rob like a freak), but let let us like it. I don't think they really get this movie b/c they were probably not that big of fans of the games. That is the the main focus for this movie. Am I the only one who's not surprised that Doug brought up a sexist argument again. Hey Doug guess what? I'm NOT in denial. I know what I'm saying. I genuinely think this is a fun, entertaining movie (not perfect though). Mortal Kombat was never really dark and gritty. It always had a humorous edge to it. So why were they wanting, no, demanding it to be dark and gritty? A dark and gritty Mortal Kombat could work, but it's not a MUST. Trust me, this movie is not NEARLY as bad as they made it out to be. But if they don't care for it, then I'm find with that. They just sounded a little hostile.

videogamehunter820 Adding to what you said, as someone who did play the games...a lot - And was and still is totally enthralled by the blood and gore - That shit totally didn't matter, both Rob and Doug treated that like it was the end-all-be-all of Mortal Kombat, granted it is for the fighting part of the games but the movie was all about the games story and characters which for the most part not only hit it spot on but lay the groundwork for the future games to improve their characters and story and that made the film frigging awesome, it was Mortal Kombat's story on the big screen. Anyway, Ed Boon and most of MK's production team loved the movie and still reference it in the latest MK games, if it was good enough for them, it makes sense that it's good enough for us.

It's only natural that they sound hostile towards it. After all, it's so much more fun to go on an exaggerated rant when talking about a movie with someone who shares your thoughts than to levelly state where exactly you would place it on scale from good to bad, whether the rant it's overly negative or overly positive.

Once again, NC proves he is not to be taken seriously. The fact that people are still watching and talking about this movie proves there is in fact pretty good. It is flawed, true, but it is generally quite enjoyable. OK, Christopher Lambert has clearly not taken his role seriously, but I found his goofiness actually pretty fun. Johnny Cage is insufferable because he's supposed to be insufferable, that's his character in the games too. Robin Shou was perfect as Liu Kang, and saying he's "just some random Chinese guy" is borderline racist. I stopped watching after this part. NC should stick to comedy, when he tries to be a serious critic he always ends up looking like an ass.

Nash Knight What sort of logic is that? Just because people are still watching and talking about the Mortal Kombat film that doesn't mean it's good. By that logic The Room and Garbage Pail Kids are good films which they're not. And Doug wasn't being racist when he said that film Liu Kang was just some random Chinese guy. He meant it in the sense that Liu Kang is given no character in the film and is just there. You're just acting like a fanboy who can't take that a film he likes is being criticized.

@Xehanort10
@Xehanort10 9 жыл бұрын
Nash Knight Criticizing a film you like is not "pushing it too far." The film isn't perfect just because you like it. People who think that films they like are above criticism simply because they like them are pretty stupid if you ask me. You liking the Mortal Kombat film does not mean it can't or shouldn't be criticized. All films have flaws and things about and in them that could have been done better. All books and games are the same. And I'm not an NC fanboy. i'm just saying that you saying the film is automatically good just because you like it and because people are still watching and talking about it is biased on your part. And saying NC isn't to be taken seriously and that he ends up looking like an ass when he tries to be a serious critic just because he criticized a film you like is how a whiny fanboy would act. His criticisms were valid IMO. Have you ever heard of constructive criticism? Or do you run on the fanboy and fangirl logic of "I like it therefore it's good and everyone likes it just because I do and it's utterly perfect and flawless and anyone who doesn't like it is either a hater or jealous of the person who made it."

You on the other hand are being biased and calling the MK film well liked and popular just because you like it. And saying that Doug's opinion isn't to be taken seriously just because he has a different opinion to you and you don't agree with his opinion is quite arrogant. And I didn't disregard anything you wrote. I read all of it and replied to all the different parts of it. If you like it that's fine. It's your "People still talk about it and watch it therefore it must be good" excuse I have a problem with. Johan Öberg I believe the point is the producers didn't want a parent revolt on their hands with this, given this game has a series of moves that lets you, say, rip your mask off and turn into a fire breathing skeleton, rip somebody in half, or uppercut them onto spikes at the bottom of a pit. it meant audience, and audience means return on investment. It's not necessarily the best of things (such as a remake of Robocop with such a low rating when the original had to be re-cut 12 times to make an R rating) but here it worked okay, it's not sinful, it still relied on a concept of fighting to the death, and it still features the lines "Finish him," "Fatality," "Flawless victory," and everybody's favourite "GET OVER HERE!" to me, this movie worked well, had most of the look of the game to count, went into the lore correctly (unlike Annihilation that completely forgot its own story AND LEFT OUT GOD DAMN KABAL AND STRYKER, THANKS SUCK-BONES!), included Reptile as an obviously hidden character (some play throughs of MK you wouldn't even see him), and still has the best most ass-kicking theme song of any martial arts movie.

Just so you guys know the first Mortal Kombat game was based on Enter the Dragon and it was never meant to have blood and gore. It was suppose to just had motion capture digitize character with martial arts moves. Ed Boon and John Tobias just happens to add blood and gore to it to spice things up because of the last fight in Enter the Dragon was bloody. Also they want to take advantage of the dizzy feature from Street Fighter games so the fatalities serve that purpose. The first Mortal Kombat movie on the other hand was spectacular, there were more martial arts than blood and gore and that is what's important about it rather than the scripted no-talent actors who appeared in MK Annihilation where no one other than Robin Shou and Keith Cook knows how to fight and do stunts.

Loved the movie back then, and still love it. Yeah it has many of the tropes of the mid 90s action movies but it still holds up (besides the Gorro puppet/animatronic). The music is kickass, the fight choreography for the most part is good, and besides a few side steps it follows the plot of the game quite good. And yeah, MK to be PG13 is kind of silly but let's be honest, the majority of the crowd wanting to see the movie were kids/teens, not adults. Why prevent all of them from entering the cinemas but making it R? And Johnny Cage character was pretty spot on. Just check the last two MK games. The dude has a friggin tattoo of his name on his chest! I respect your opinions but I disagree on almost all of them.

I get the general sentiment that the film could have been so much better if it had gone a bit more gratuitous with the violence, but it kinda feels like you guys are misremembering the movie as well. Particularly pertaining to the 'low body count' and over emphasis on plot. The way I remember it, once the premise was set up and the tournament was underway, it was nearly back to back fight scenes, where all but one (Liu vs Kitana) ended with the murder of one of the fighters.
