I think the whole "No Villain." Thing is very true. Sid is just a kid who is having fun. We're just so invested with the toy's lives that it just looks that way. Mr. Potato Head I never saw as a villain, I saw him more like a jealous younger brother or co-worker who took charge when the leader was flawed. Plus he did get his comeuppance when RC crashed into him. And he was shown to still be regretting his actions in the second film which take place a few YEARS after the first one. Hell even Woody had some unlikeable traits, true he didn't plan for Buzz to fall out of the house. But he still wanted Buzz to fall behind the shelf. And he got consequences for that.

Ryan Kmetz Sid is a little bit a villain in my opinion. You see him be mean to his sister and steal and break her toys, making him definitely somewhat antagonistic to the viewer, even ignoring the toys' perspective.

In the original story pitch to Disney, Woody was a hateable dick. (Go watch deleted scenes to find out.) Jeffery Katzenberg told Pixar that he wanted the film more "Adult" since it worked well with Beauty and the Beast. John Lasseter had cold feet on making Woody a jerk. So I'm glad that in the final film, Woody is somewhat jerky, but he does learn that jealousy leads to actions that get you in trouble. (It's pretty much his fault that he and Buzz landed in Sid's hands.) And he does try to fix his mistakes and not just to redeem himself. That said I think Woody's a great character because of that.

I don't think Sid's a conventional villain and more a somewhat mean spirited character that indirectly makes themselves a hinderance. Scud is a menace, but not really a sapient one, he's like a standard rampaging monster from the toy's perspective but otherwise he's just acting like a normal dog. Woody and Buzz only hate each other because they keep accidentally screwing the other over (as exemplified in their 'you started it' argument) while the toys are just afraid of Woody from this misunderstanding. So no conventional 'evil' character, just flawed ones that indirectly cause inconveniences.

There is another element to Toy Story worth mentioning: The fact that it _wasn't_ a musical. Disney at the time was pretty well defined by the musical formula, and was *extremely* uncomfortable with the idea of Toy Story being a more conventional story with more conventional music. In one rather famous instance (within the animation industry at least), when Tom Hanks was cast as Woody, his first question was, "You're not going to make me sing, are you?" Obviously, Disney was eventually persuaded against making Toy Story a musical, and honestly, it's a lot better for it. It's a "buddy story", and singing characters could have _easily_ ruined the narrative.

StrunDoNhor Disney was not in charge of Toy Story. Pixar was already a rising animation studio that relied on short films, and they were already working on Toy Story before Disney got involved. Rumour has it that Disney didn't even officially own Pixar Studios until after A Bug's Life (Pixar's second feature film), and up until that point, Pixar was merely collaborating with Disney as a separate entity rather than working within the Walt Disney Studios. Don't get me wrong, Toy Story does count as a Disney movie, but from my understanding, it was only co-produced by Disney, with Pixar being the primary Studio before it became an official branch of Disney Studios. (Sorry if that sounds really repetitive, I'm too tired to spread out my vocabulary in one comment.)Also, do the characters really have to be the ones singing to make it a musical? Don't get me wrong, I'm not disregarding your comment or anything, it's just that Toy Story 2 was considered by award shows as a comedy and a musical, while the music style of the movie (Randy Newman music playing during the movie) remained the same. Yet, if they can call Toy Story 2 a musical when none of the characters really sang anything (aside from the very last scene when Wheezy starts singing), then why isn't the first one a musical? It had just about the same amount of music as the sequels, and none of them had the characters singing in them. Maybe a musical isn't just the characters expressing song and dance... Perhaps you can get away with calling Toy Story a musical based on the fact that the songs played in the background actually have lyrics, and make you feel something... Or perhaps the sequel was just mislabeled, and I'm looking too much into it. Besides, nobody ever tried to pass off Dumb and Dumber as a musical, and it was full of upbeat background pop songs. Well, that's enough of my rambling. Sorry to keep you reading for this long, and if you find any inaccuracies in my reply, please feel free to point them out, and possibly link your source of information, if you so please. Thank you, and you have a good one. :)

therealCrazyJake Disney approached Pixar directly to make a feature-length animated film after watching their (at the time) impressive short, "Tin Toy". As such, they [Disney] still had a *firm* grasp over the developmental process of *Toy Story*; they had the power to veto most creative decisions and could, at any time, kill off the project entirely. Anyways, what I'm getting at is the film, even during development, was still *heavily* associated with Disney. They were _extremely_ hesitant to publish anything that wasn't a musical. (Though I can't say whether or not they actively _pushed_ for it to be a musical.) This leads us back to the mildly famous incident with Tom Hanks. When he was brought in for casting he was well aware of Disney's involvement, as well as their reputation. Hence, "You're not going to make me sing, are you?". As for the actual definition of a *Musical*, that's getting a bit too off-track, and thus I won't go into too much detail. For the record, though, Toy Story is *not* a musical; a musical film is defined as a genre in which songs that are sung by the characters are interwoven with the narrative. Toy Story 2 is (very loosely) considered a musical, primarily because of Jessie's song, "When She Loved Me," which is sung by a central character and advances the narrative.

I absolutely adore Pixar. They've created fantastic stories, lovable characters, memorable moments, hilarious comedy, and deep emotions, all topped by gorgeous animation. The thing I find most admirable is how timeless most Pixar films are. I recently rewatched Toy Story and Finding Nemo and found that they were even better than I remembered. Even their lesser movies like Cars or Cars 2 I can appreciate for how much time, money, and passion went into the production

I understand your opinion about the ending, but in a friendly fashion I want to share mine. I see this moment as representing crossing the barrier into true adulthood and I think it is very well approached. As Andy is giving his toys away to a new home his memories of childhood are stirred up and he reminisces as he introduces each of the toys to the young girl. This is so powerful because he is confronted by many of his most cherished childhood memories as he is starting his life as an adult. I'll admit that Andy is treating this moment as if he is giving away his beloved pet, but this is why I think this ending is so powerful.

All of these '90's Kids' are just clouded by nostalgia, I was born in 1991 and I was into the phase about four years ago until I realise that even the 90's produced crap. But I wouldn't be 'proud' of being a kid from a decade because of a movie, TV show, game or anything, I just enjoyed a nice childhood in that decade and I should be proud of that instead of a movie that was big and memorable at the time, although that I love.

One idea that might have helped Pixar animate the humans was if they were like the humans in the Tom and Jerry cartoons were you only see the characters from the chest or waist down and not their faces. Sure you'd still have to animate the bodies and clothing, but it still would have helped. And you don't have to worry about the hair. Maybe Pixar needed to animate humans to get their feet wet but do they really need to appear onscreen and were today's audiences would shudder at the sight of them? With computers back then it was nearly impossible to do good humans, but it's not Pixar's fault that technology evolved lightyears in the past 2 decades.

hmm... I can't really remember another film that had toys coming to life as the main gimmick. Why does he say we've seen it a million times. Toy Story was so unique to me because of that concept. The hope that my toys could come to life was made real to me only because of this movie. I know that other films like The Little Engine That Could had talking toys, but Toy Story had some real-world toys springing to life, while the living toys in The Little Engine That Could weren't necessarily a product of the real world that could be specifically recognized. Tillie and the other engines are who made TLETC work, and are the characters that children adore and wish to be real, while the living toys who end up pulled by Tillie are strangely taken for granted. Toy Story actually made interesting characters as real-world toys that became so real in our imaginations, that, like the trains in TLETC, we wanted them to really have life - only that hope could be placed on our real-life plastic. So I still think Toy Story did something brand new with the toys coming to life.

At 3:16 when he says "Disney' weren't doing very well" what does he mean? I thought they were at the strongest then with Hercules, Aladdin and Little Mermaid etc.

I think the title's a bit of a misnomer, as this video series seems to be more likely Doug's actual opinions of these movies, and not his Nostalgia Critic character's opinions. Just a hunch.

I just wanna point out that Canada made Reboot, the first half-hour CGI tv show in history, LONG BEFORE Pixar released Toy Story. Your welcome.

fun fact: Jeffrey Katzenberg wanted Pixar to make the movie edgy and the resulting product was that Woody came across as an @sshole. Disney, including Katzenberg, hated it and the project almost got scraped. Maybe if Katzenberg had let Pixar do the movie their way this mess could have been avoided.

***** You have no right to insult when you spend your free time doing something as sad trolling on the internet in their free time. You're a pathetic waste of space and air who, in their free time when they could do something constructive and actually help our fucked up society, just deliberately tries to piss other people off. Fucking hypocrite. Also, just because I watch a T.V. show about ponies doesn't mean I'm "a fat guy who jerks off to ponies". 'Nuff said.

Can anyone tell me the name of the score music playing underneath the video at 3:15? I know it's composed by Randy Newman and from the TS soundtrack but I can't figure out the name.
