It's all in gearing and driver skill. I've seen a '72 C10 Chevy truck blow the wheels off a '68 Camaro 454 COPO because the idiot couldn't drive, had more money and mouth than skill.

Chevrolet didn't have the 409 available until late 1961.....it became popular in 1962 followed by the 427 available in 1963
