That was as friendly as a sprung bear trap. I think the word she was looking for is "hostile." The opossum was probably thinking, "UNHAND ME, FOUL WENCH!!!"

The opossum has such low body temp that they can't carry or transmit rabies. They can carry leptospirosis which spread through infected urine, etc. They look like they should be dirty disease bags, but they aren't. People kill these things all the time because of misconceptions like that. Still, touching one is a horrid idea because opossums do have a temperment to match those stunning looks. Lol.

@@andrewstevens2658 The only way to raise a wild animal as a pet is to (a) acquire it when it’s a baby or (b) earn its trust by feeding it or nursing it to health. Not saying you’re wrong. I know perfectly well that a wild animal can be raised as a pet under the right circumstances, but one doesn’t just pick up a wild animal from the side of the road and try to keep it as a pet.

They most likely don't make a good indoor pet, but if you have a large property, they might make a good outdoor pet. They are actually very resistant to disease, especially rabies. And they can eat their weight in ticks, which is good if you have livestock. Edit to add: Another animal to consider having around are bats. You can build a bat roost and attach it to the side of a building and they will deep the pesky insects away.

I had a possum that started coming to my yard when he was small. I had to get him away from my dogs a couple of times so i started feeding him outside the fence area hoping he'd stop coming in. He would eat, then come in. I fed him for over a year. He was quite the chunky monkey. I would randomly scratch his back while he ate. He'd always make the mean face until i would tell him to stop. He got hit by a car a couple of months ago. I kinda miss him.

My family raised a litter of eight and a singleton a few years later. They potty trained themselves and only went in a shallow pan of water (or a bathtub with an inch of water). They were very sweet and liked to eat dinner with the family. I now have one who visits my backyard. I make sure to put out snacks for Francois.

My apartment has one entrance. (I’m on a second floor.) One late night, after night school, I came home and found one of these “pets” sitting at my front door, completely blocking my only way inside. It was the size of a 5 gallon pail, a very angry 5 gallon pail. It would not move for any reason. I spent the night in a hotel. 😅

Yup possums are pretty good eaten, but not really worth the effort. You see, when I lived in TN we live caught them. Then fed them good foods and grain to clean them out. We generally did it for 30 days. Thus, it’s really not worth the effort.

Opossums are awesome animals to have around your home! Their body temperatures run too low for most diseases to affect them, and they're responsible for us being able to have things like anti-venom! They also very necessary with keeping pesky insects away from your home! As for them being pet material, I would highly recommend you check your local laws before even considering such a thing! Doing what that lady did was a very bad idea, considering those big chompers and their willingness to use them! Wild animals are just that: wild! They should be respected and viewed from a distance.

Respectfully I do have to take issue with your position. Growing up we had a couple of opossums as pets and they were wonderful. You do have to know what you're getting into when you take on an exotic pet like that. As an example they're nocturnal. But when raised as weinlings they make very nice pets. But they are not for everybody. 😉
