How does the new Duty RDS compare to existing red dots in the Aimpoint lineup? Is it a cheap T2? A small PRO? A round ACRO? Or something else entirely?
In this video we break down the real differences between the most commonly available models of Aimpoint. Once you get past the obvious differences like size, weight, material, and battery type, the next biggest difference is light transmission and night vision performance. Luckily Aimpoint's European website gives us some clues to figure out which is the best one.

3:16 The ACO is not advertised as having night vision settings, but I have compared one to a PRO and the settings and glass clarity seem identical to my eye.

I never really gave a shit about the blue tint. But a interesting point for those that state the duty is clear & "has no blue tint" If the 420-620 figure is accurate. >620 is most of orange and all of red. The remaining colors make a blueish - purple check mate atheists
@coffeeandlifting

People who complain about blue tint are unaware that it was never a defect. It was always an intentional feature for adding daylight contrast to the dot. The irony is that most of the people who complained were not NVG users. They just didn't like the "ugly" blue tint.

I'm by no means as seriously into optics performance as a lot of people are so I went with a used Comp M4 for my fighting rifle. Took a minute to clean sand off it but it hasn't disappointed yet. Coming from the perspective of someone who doesn't keep up to date with every new optics release, the name recognition of an Aimpoint being more likely to survive a bomb going off than the rifle I have it on, definitely carried some weight. Also being able to use a AA battery in it is just, stupid convenient.

I was issued a salty old CompM2 for a deployment last October. I installed the battery, set the dot to the brightness appropriate to my conditions, then checked and adjusted the dot any time I went inside or outside. 5:22 Physics is the reason. A: that's a 30% reduction in Bandwidth from the models that cover 420-700nm. B: NV picks up infra-red, which below red (700nm+). Since the Duty is Opaque to this frequency, it will actually contribute to clouding. Hope that made sense Edit: also just occurred to me that most of the ambient light that gets multiplied at night is going to be in the red/infrared frequencies due to light bounce and what not

@CorvetteZ06TT the way Image intensification works is that it's much more sensitive to light, and it shows us what it sees. Well, to do that, it receives light from the entire visible spectrum (340-740nm) and IR (740-1000nm). The Duty has an Additional 15% light get through, if that light is between 420-620nm. In return, it is able to pick up 30% LESS of the entire visible spectrum. Additionally, whatever light cannot get through is stopped/contained within the sight itself, which leads to the "cloudiness" you see. TLDR: less overall light gets through, and the glass prevents alot of frequencies of light from getting through.

620nM is still in the visible spectrum, let alone the near IR where NV operates. 700nM is accepted as the point where visible light ends and near IR begins so an optic that doesn't have good light transmission well above 700nM will have bad night vision performance. The Duty actually may negatively affect your ability to detect or accurately identify shades of red if its transmission between 620 and 700 is also actually poor. It should be noted that the accepted threshold between visible light and UV is 380nM, meaning that all of Aimpoint's red dots may inhibit your ability to detect or accurately identify shades of purple, depending on how well they transmit light in that gap they didn't rate for.

The aimpoint h2, though not having nv settings, works great under nv. In the “off” position, it’s almost equal side by side to a t2 on the lowest setting, and position “1” on the h2 is about the same as the brightest nv setting on a t2. The t2 has more “inbetween” settings, but I haven’t seen a scenario where I can’t use my h2 at night, including pitch black nights deep in the woods of Oregon, or a bright moon lit night.

No comment on the H2 series? They are cheaper than the T2 with no NV capability, but the quality of the optic is up there. It's what I went with for my AKM.

Crazy to think a Sig dot can stack up well against Aimpoints, but then again, the T2 was launched 9 years ago... and boy is it apparent when handling it compared to the dots in the $120-150 range like the Romeo 5 or HS403. Not to say that those two are bombproof/SHTF capable as the average Aimpoint, but the feature set baseline has come a long way. A Romeo 4T Pro is a great looking alternative to the T2. Might consider that as a next purchase since my T2 is a boring, but reliable, optic in inventory.

I think SIG's EO division just decided it was worth it to compete. They built facilities, hired the best engineers in the world, and decided to build the best optics. The upshot is, they also now make the most expensive optics. The Romeo 2, 9T, and new Romeo M17 are basically world beaters and they charge an appropriate amount.

I watched a torture test video on YT for the Romeo 5 (which is $140, and a PRO is $450-500), af the Romeo 5 took a absolute beating and kept working. I’m not a huge fan of Sigs firearms but their optics do look to be legit. Decided my first RDS will be a Romeo 5 for my carbine. From there my 2nd RDS will be a higher end model so either a 4T or a T2 or even maybe a expansive LVPO, but that will be a few years from now.

Just to flesh out a bit more of the history here, the CompM2 wasn't the original M68 CCO -- that honor goes to the CompM XD, which served as the M68 from '97-'99 after improving the Comp series battery life from the 300 or so hours of the original CompM to a whopping 500 or so. The M2 didn't come out until 2000, but that was indeed the model that first introduced us all to "battery life isn't a thing anymore", which is why a lot of people think of it as the OG for modern red dots. That's when Aimpoint's ACET technology hit the scene, but not before 100,000 CompM XDs were already in service.

The visible spectrum only goes to about 700nm, so the Duty's reduced spectrum would only affect its NV performance.

I bought an Aimpoint pro back in 2018 I think and have been running it ever since. I only bought it because I was in the army and it looked like the M68 I had on my M4 so I was already familiar with it for the most part. I like it a lot, knowing there are better options. I’m a poor but I have have named on my rifle that make it look like I’m not a poor lol. aim point, sure fire, LWRC.

The Duty really should’ve been a cheaper T2. The T2 is great, but it’s a no-frills, basic red dot for $900+, which is very hard to swallow now that the Sig 4XT Pro is out. The Sig seems really sturdy and the night vision performance is great.

What exactly is a cheaper T2 in your books? Exactly the same performance, size, and weight, but cheaper? Why would they cannibalize their own product? Especially when that product is still selling like hotcakes? In my mind, cheaper T2 and smaller PRO are basically the same thing. The same size and weight as a T2 with slightly degraded performance. There's also the H2 to consider. I like my Sig and Holosun dots, but if I'm going to trust it with my life, it's getting an Aimpoint. The "extra features" of the Sig are irrelevant to me, and I can't really put a price on the track record that Aimpoint has.

@@Wlmwelder Those guys have also used EOTech's for years, and many of them break. They'll say as much. Their use case isn't your use case. They have teammates and if an optic goes down it's not nearly as bad as it would be if it goes down for you. Lots of team guys are also still using Aimpoints. I'm not saying the new Sigs aren't durable, of duty grade, but they're definitely not as proven as Aimpoint, and, again, the features don't interest me in the slightest. An extra few hundred bucks is not much in the grand scheme of things if you're shooting as much as you should be.
