I FORGOT!
Sorry guys, a couple of items I forgot to mention in the video intro:
- THIS IS NOT A SCIENTIFIC TEST - This was purely a real world comparison and even though it's not crazily detailed, it provides a real world representation of the difference between each speaker and cab.
- Mic Placement - The Mic was placed the same on every cabinet, meaning that I had half of the capsule on the dust cap, and half on the cone, and the mic was directly on axis with the speaker. This is not the ideal placement for every speaker, but it makes things a little more even.
- Tuning was E Flat Standard
- VHT head placed on it's side was a placement marker for me to line up every cab the same way
- Controls WERE NOT changed on the Badlander throughout the entire video. The differences you are hearing are purely the speaker/cab.

Hey Guys! I forgot to clarify a couple things in the video intro as I was in a hurry to wrap up filming before leaving. Check the description for mic placement details and a couple other minor points. What did you think? Which was your favorite? Let me know below!

They all sounded fine to me, different flavors. Will say though that Ampeg cab sounded great. If you close your eyes and scroll through it jumps out.

I think the Chinese V30's have more top end across the board. I was surprised at the difference between the Mesa V30/cabs sounding so different. The orange cab sounded really, exceptionally good. I really like the low end on the Randall XL.

@kylebull2 Love these shoot outs. Any chance you could play a few open power chords with a little less gain/boost/compresion (but still high gain) so we can hear more of the harmonic content from the gear? The older I get the more I use less gain , more mids, and more complex cord voicings/inversions etc. Does that Engl 2x12 sound as big as a 4x12 in the room?

I like them with high dose of high mid punch, so V30 UK 16 Ohm first, followed by Mesa V30 UK 8 ohm in mesa traditional and OS, which strangely enough they don't sound that dark to me as they should (but it might depend on year of manufacture). And that front loaded Carvin is a pure tonal bliss!! I also have a carvin legacy 4x12 slanted with V30 UK 16 Ohm (early 2000's) and it is my go to V30 cab!

Despite expecting it, I'm floored everytime at how different V30 loaded cabs can sound from each other. The variances due to production tolerances and production eras, the difference between 8 and 16 Ohms speakers, differences between front and rear loaded cabs, straight and angled, grille material and a bunch of other things each impart their own little flavour on the tone. You know I prefer 8 over 16 Ohms speakers but to my surprise, I ended up liking the Marshalls and the Orange quite a lot in this video which are loaded with 16s. Great job, mate! Thanks for this!

Crazy right? Just too many factors... Also each speaker is supposed to be put into a cab with certain specs of size and material according to the brand (which never seems to be the case with guitar speakers btw), and there's also a myth, that I'm starting to believe in, which is that in a 4x12 the brand will put one good sounding speaker, one average and 2 meh sounding ones, so you have to search for the good one when recording!

There’s just some magic in the Mesa angled cabs that consistently brings it back to the top for me. No distracting peaks anywhere really, and just very balanced in the mids. Beaten like a dead horse but the standard for good reason. That ampeg is gnarly too!

I can only imagine the amount of time and work that went into making this video. Great job Kyle! It was very interesting to hear the differences. So many factors like air chamber volume, type of wood, wood thickness, speaker cone mass, coil resistance etc. There is an entire study of speakers and engineering called Thiel and Small Parameters that measure all these various factors when it comes to speaker design. Some companies design a speaker for a given cab which is rare these days I think, and then you have the more common practice of designing a cabinet for a given speaker in the opposite direction of development. Keep up the great work! Love the content on the second channel!

That Marshall mode four cab surprised me. I knew it was a sleeper cab but dayum!!! I have a Engl 412 pro from 2003. I like it but it’s a bit sharp sounding of a cab. Really high mid present. I wanna get the matching cab for me EVH but that’s not v30’s This was a fun video. This is the geeky type of stuff I like seeing.

This video just shows you that the search for the Vintage 30 tone is an ever going thing. I say, if it sounds good, use it. I recently bought a 90's Laney 2x12 cab and it has Celestion G12m-70 speakers in it. Those speaker get crapped on all the time but honestly, they sound pretty great with my Mark V:25

Awesome premise and execution. I've been trying to figure out how to pick a 2x12 cab and been overwhelmed with choice to the point of not doing anything. Adding timestamps would be useful as auditory 'memory' is quite short and jumping between with timestamps would make that easier to overcome.

What I come to, conclusion-wise by playing with the Marshall 1960AV, Harley G212 Vertical and now a G112 Plus (Thiele-BassPort) cab, is that the resonances of the cabinet are super influential on the tone. Love these kind of videos and will doing my own video on this subject, with my limited possibilities very soon! 🙂

thanks for this, this is really what differentiates you from the pack! Would it be possible to know for each cab: 1) year of manufacture of the cones (or at least an approximation) 2) front loaded / back loaded? (front loaded = more high mids, back loaded = more low mids) thanks and keep it up, we need this! :)

With my Mesa power amp, it has Presence control and a Modern Mode, is REALLY good at sounding like shit. But in fact I love it, love to supply it with a variety of speaker pairs (and assorted preamps). Because it’s a challenge. The Mesa UK V30 works well for it. The obvious choice. I finally broke down and went and got a Mesa cab for it. But in my experimental cabs I’ve tried and liked the Creamback 65s and Redbacks as well. These alternatives provide some of the missing mids. Compared to a Marshall amp, that is. Marshall’s are voiced so differently. Thank you for what you’re doing. Solid jams.

Biggest thing for me is speakers are a total lottery. However 16 ohm speakers are almost always a bit more scooped and bright, which sit in a mix better to my ears. 8 ohms are almost always more mid focused and warm. Personal preference but every time I use an 8 ohm in a mix I wind up cutting a bit of mids and warmth and brightening with eq. Would rather just use the 16 ohm to begin with as guitars can get phasey real fast with eq. The 8 ohm Engl sounded 16 ohm like though, real nice.

The Orange PPC412 is the winner in my eyes (ears lol). It’s clearer than the Mesas but not harsh. It’s also a lot cheaper second hand I find too. My biggest issue with a quad of V30s is that some amps just end up too dark without blowing the place up. I kind of regretted selling my Recto OS 4x12 but right here is the reason. Another PPC412 for me.

I'm kind of shocked how much they differ, like day and night. At the same time I'm not that surprised because I know that even in the same cab all four speakers can sound dramatically different. Apparently the tolerances are huge at Celestion. At this point I'm not completely sure what matters more, the difference in cab or the difference in various V30 speakers. I would think it's the speakers and even the same type of V30 in a cab would differ a lot from the others in that cab. Who knows... I liked the Stock UK Marshall Vintage 16 Ohm btw and the Chinese Stock 16 Ohm V30 in the Bogner the least.

Glenn Fricker did a test with different V30 speakers from different years but...not a whooping 20 of them! Celestion did drop the ball with the production quality in some years but it seems that 2022/23 models are back to that golden age quality. That being said, even if you get 100 of the same production line there will be some minimal variations from item to item just because of how the speakers are made.

Mesa and Marshall are almost always great, but Orange Bogner Blackstar Randall, and not in this vid: Diezel, Fortin, Friedman, Omega, Driftwood, Coffee, and many others, can sound absolutely killer. Under-appreciated cabs imo, not amongst those in the know (boutique enjoyers), but mostly some producers. And having that many tools at hand ensures that you can get a great, fitting tone in any mix you encounter

What kind of v30's were in the old ENGL Cab? Year/ohms Also was it a standard or Pro? I used to have a Pro back in the day. Back in 2004/5. I think it had 2002's. I miss that cab.

Biggest difference seems to be between the 8ohm and 16ohm speakers. Am I wrong?

Regardless of cab, all the UK made ones did sound a lot better to me. The Chinese ones have that guitar center sound.

I own a orange 2x12 that came with Chinese 8 ohm V30s. I bought it used and the speakers were already broken in but I tried to break them in too. No matter what volume I played at they gave me ear fatigue almost immediately. Just shrill and ice picky. I've since swapped them for an Emi Swamp Thang and a Fane F70. Killer combo that sounds fat as hell for when I want to play Fuzzed out stoner shit and tight and aggressive when I play more thrash, death, and prog inspired stuff. Great cleans too.

@@rickyturner2742 Eh my 2x12 is a tank and sounds good with different speakers. What makes them the worst, besides the horrible v30's they put in them?

Is that an SE? What do you think about the pickups? Im trying to decide between the SE McCarty and the SE Custom 24.

Yep! SE Mccarty 594 Standard. The Pickups are sre surprisingly fuckin great. I have no plans to change them out, and I'm generally pretty picky. Nice, detailed lower output pickup with a broad midrange,

Those Chinese 16 ohms V30s don't sound as bad as they say. Mostly all the 16 ohms sounded good for high gain. In my opinion.

V30s aren't a consistent model of speaker, there's no 2 of them that sound the same, also cab design and size needs to be adapted accordingly with the speaker, that's why a speaker you like might not sound good on certain cab. Then there's 8 ohm vs 16... Best thing you could do is put a graph eq pedal on the fx loop and try to flatten the eq curve of your cab, but if you have a bad speaker... You can always change it. Fane f70 is cool...
