1. A boss who values you will find a way to promote you. If they dont, or cite HR promotion cycles etc., they dont intend to and like dangling the carrot and exploiting you for your skills and competence. 2. Playing petty politics always seems to work. Corporate offices are toxic cesspools. Straightforward, honest employees rarely move up. 3. Similarly, employees who are very intelligent aren't going to move up either, because leadership prefers subservient, sycophantic mediocrity.

I was passed over for promotion because I became irreplaceable in my role. So, I am now dumping all the work to my potential successor and am making sure my boss knows about it.

This is precisely my situation as of today. I am doing exactly this in response. The people I trained were promoted to my position, so I am only ever going to do what they do unless promoted. Not training anyone ever again because clearly I'm nothing special.

Sometimes the problem isn't you, it's the boss. Boss's have biases, and one I had was apparently clueless about how bad his were. The worst ones were he only promoted people that were his approximate age, and he only promoted people that had the stereotypical look people associate with success. Are you tall, full head of hair, and slender? Congrats, you've been given the secret promotion nobody else even knew was available. Ten years older, only 6', and male pattern baldness? Well, gee, even though you are LITERALLY DOING THE WORK OF THREE PEOPLE, there's no reason to give you that bump in pay grade even though they hand them out like candy at the other facilities.

I find that my biggest flaw is that my personality doesn't fit what they are looking for. Being an introvert is a major downfall when it comes to promotions. Even though I went back and got a graduate degree I have lost out to other employees that were less educated and credentialed. My reviews go something like 5/5 Engineering skills and maybe a 3/5 communication skills. I'll try taking your advice and try working on my conversation skills and hopefully upper MGMT finds me more relatable.

Learn to fake it. I'm a total introvert and I HATE small talk. But, my peers, bosses, and reports wouldn't believe anyone who said that I was. Typically you know when an extrovert would say something, don't you? In my head, I just say "fuq it", open my mouth, and start talking. Don't worry about being awkward. The way I see it, nobody is going to remember the random thing I said or did in 48 hours anyway. So, even if what you say doesn't come out exactly right, it doesn't matter. Plus, the more you talk, the more you'll figure out the right things to say. If your employer has a mentorship program, jump into it. If you get an opportunity to communicate with higher-ups, take it. You want VISIBLE projects that put you out in front of leadership, even if they're not the most important projects. Your best chance at a promotion is if everybody knows who you are and somebody in management likes you. That's WAY more important than a graduate degree.

I'm going to stop right here because red flags go up that you're okay working for a boss who is not doing what they should be doing. If you're ready to move up, a good boss is aware of it and finds the replacement for your silver position so he can get you taking home gold. A bad boss sits in their office, ignoring everything like a god who has lost its passion, waiting to see if you're clever enough to do their job for them, and only letting you past the gates if you should shine three times brighter than they do. Given the opportunity, by the way, please get rid of the piece of clay who stood between you and your destiny. Eesh. And don't listen to somebody who tells you to work for an idiot. There's not much profit in it.

I was the obvious pick, however I'm pretty irreplaceable. I'm not a stagnant guy either (so of course my plan for growth was very stringent.) They went with the 'safe' bet that is not as ambitious and will stay in that position for a least a year (that's if she doesn't quit and job hop to take another job because she has a big title on her resume now.) Sometimes it's better to dodge a bullet than to take the bullet. So when it comes back to you, you'll have the flexibility of saying 'NO.'

I made an effort by telling my manager, and one of the engineers I wanted to learn more about some of the technology they are using. Here’s the simple skinny on this: In order to get promoted, you first need to be a “key employee”, meaning highly valued by your superiors enough that they want to ensure not only that you stick around, but are happy to do so with regards to your salary and status within the company. Note that your work quality is only tangentially related to whether you’re a “key employee”; it can range from excellent or mediocre, especially since your work quality isn’t the primary factor that determines whether you’re a “key employee” or not. Roughly, it’s based on how much they like you and how “alpha” they deem you. It’s basically a popularity contest. So then, how do you know whether or not you’re a “key employee”? Very easily, in fact. Here is how: If you don’t know, then you’re not one. Companies make sure to let “key employees” know in no uncertain terms that they are ones both by their words and by their actions. If you are a “key employee” at your company, you already know it, and if you don’t, then I’m sorry to inform you that you’re not one.

This video could have started and ended with #3. If your boss/manager/whatever has not put together a written plan that details all that you must accomplish to be promoted, you have not accomplished those items, and the two of you have not sat down together to jointly prepare the justification that will be presented to HR and senior management - you are not getting promoted. Your promotion is not even in consideration, let alone budgeted if not planned a year in advance.

Hey Billy, If there's not a plan for your promotion I agree that it's a red flag. This could also be an opportunity to create one for yourself and share with your manager .. a bold and proactive move!
@billybeemus3929
@billybeemus3929 2 жыл бұрын
@@leadtheteamwithbenfanning8397 - Yes, I agree, but... You still need that manager to actually drive the process. In my own situation, I had a documented plan and exceeded all deliverables. The manager that I was working with submitted the paperwork for a promotion just as he was leaving for a new job. His boss, and the new manager, did not pursue the promotion. Not for me or anyone else on the team. Three years later, nobody on the team has been promoted except that new manager. Needless to say, there is now a wave of resignations as people are moving on now that the market is better post-pandemic.
@BenFanning

@@billybeemus3929 That's must have been incredibly disappointing. Sounds like the company could be preparing to make some strategic shifts or could be under a lot of financial pressure that would prevent them from promoting. Funnily, in January the director asked all of us to give one suggestion that we think can improve the company. I was the only one that said progression pathways as it at least sets key goals for employees to achieve to know they're on the right track. I've not heard anything back other than "that's a good and fair suggestion" Naturally, I'm planning my exit as I'm sick of having all the work dumped on me with zero recognition while my manager claims to be working on monthly estimates for the third week running.

I spent 7 years in a position with a previous employer. Management sent me a letter telling me I wasn't promotable because I was too valuable in my current role. So, I left the company. 4 years later, my annual pay has TRIPLED from that role. You may be emotionally attached to your current company, but the company IS NOT emotionally attached to you. You may smile at your coworkers and boss and joke around, but they ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS. You could get laid off tomorrow, and nearly all of them will forget you exist almost immediately. Believe me when I tell you that you will never even hear from these people again. You don't owe your employer ANYTHING. It's your career. You're the captain of your own ship and the only one that really cares about how far you advance. Update your resume and start interviewing immediately. Get what you're worth.
