Dear Chachi, I wrote this as an Az letter, explaining the things he said, I hope it helps: My dear Crowley, I miss you so much, I needed to explain my reasons and the things I said, so please I beg you to keep on reading. I said I forgive you because, though you are unforgivable for God, there’s nothing you can do that I find so terrible that i couldn’t forgive, because I love you. I expected our first kiss to be different, i must admit it, but i have to recognize that this doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t repeat it over and over again. I can't wait to come back to that point when all this is ended. About nothing lasts forever: my dear, you are trying to convince me to stay temting me with my bookshop, but if I could choose between a life with you as an angel, or a life with my bookshop, I will choose you always before anything. You are the most important thing to me and I'll resign to any other things that I love in my life for you. Yes, even to my bookshop. About We can make the difference: my dear, we could save the world, not only save you and me, save our beloved lifestyle and everyone. If I’m in command with you by my side maybe we can find a way to stop it, if we run away we will be losing for sure. I’m so sad you didn't come to Heaven with me, but I'll be back as soon as I can find a way to stop the end. There’s no way I could stay in Heaven forever without you, my dear. My heaven is where we can be together. Forever yours, Aziraphale

I actually think Aziraphales decision is perfectly in character. Crowley is completely scarred by Heaven, and never had any loyalty to Hell, so the only thing he really has any loyalty to is Aziraphale, making the idea of leaving their sides a no brainer to him. Aziraphale has never lost his devotion to God and what he believes Heaven can be. Remember he was so unhappy not having that tie to Heaven anymore he would call to talk about his activities to Crowley because he missed having that purpose he had for so long. He sees this as a win win- making the changes he has always wanted to make, and a chance to finally not have to hide his relationship/ties with Crowley (until Crowley rejected the offer). For all their talk of shades of gray, he still sees mostly black and white. Demons as a whole bad, Angels good. Crowleys gonna need to understand why abandoning everything isn’t as cut and dry for Aziraphale as it is for him, and Aziraphale is gonna have to figure out how to go with his own personal morals, beliefs, and wants above the black and white of Heaven.
@ChachiSays
@ChachiSays 6 ай бұрын
I agree, for sure. Emotional me just wants them together and I couldn’t understand why Aziraphale felt Crowley would want to be reinstated as an Angel. There seemed to be no doubt in his mind given his level of happiness in that moment. But as you said, Aziraphale still only sees in black and white. With them in power, that could “change” things. I’m not sure how that’s going to work out with the Metatron clearly having the power here.

Maybe the biggest stab was forcibly kissing someone who was clearly stunned and distressed by it just after calling them an idiot for wanting to protect creation from Heaven and just before storming out like a child, refusing to communicate.

@@letolethe3344 Crowley's love language clearly lies in actions rather than words. Besides this is as new to him as it is to Aziraphale, he was just the first one to confront it head on so i don't blame his hastiness. He knew time was against him and felt as though his worst fear was realised ala Azi still not understanding that he's never gonna trust heaven again nor does he appear to be accepting Crowley for who he is. But yes, communication needs MUCH work between the two of them. They left only assuming that neither one of them was willing to change for the other, if Aziraphale didn't have that talk with the Metatron yet maybe he would've seen what Crowley was trying to say or even confess his love in return. But that damn angel is too impressionable :(

@@letolethe3344, Excuse me??? Aziraphale spent most of season 2, starting with the first episode, ignoring things Crowley said, being petulant "like a child" when he didn't get his way, not respecting Crowley's boundaries and even putting Crowley in danger, but you call Crowley a child who doesn't communicate because Crowley finally got enough self respect to get out of a toxic situation? I love Aziraphale, but he's the one in the wrong for how he mistreated Crowley, much of the time only wanting Crowley around when he wanted something from him. All Aziraphale's character grown in season 1 disappeared, and he reverted back to the same attitude that caused that girl to get killed in the graveyard when he had to be pressured by Crowley to give the other girl money to live, and Az didn't even seem worried about Crowley being sucked into Hell, likely to be tortured in some way for his kindness. All the while in present day season 2, Aziraphale, the super sleuth, couldn't be bothered to figure out that Crowley has been sleeping in his car with his plants and give him a place to live, instead he self-entitledly takes CROWLEY'S car which is Crowley's HOME. Aziraphale's pridefulness and vanity was on display much of season 2. Considering the attitude in your comment, I'd bet if the situation was reversed, and Aziraphale had done the 'forced kiss' you would've claimed it was just out of sweet baby Aziraphale's passion and love for the being he was clearly losing, who just broke his heart. As it is, while it's true Az is hurting too, Az broke Crowley's heart in incriminates throughout season 2, before taking a hammer to shatter Crowley's heart in their last scene. Still, despite that Crowley didn't leave, he waited by his car, waiting for Aziraphale to come to his senses, but Az didn't, even after the second coming comment from Metatron. If anyone should've been saying I forgive you, it should've been Crowley, but not until Aziraphale earned forgiveness by changing his behavior toward Crowley. Aziraphale was an idiot in season 1 when after the angels showed their true colors he thought he could stop Armageddon by going above them, only to be told by Metatron that the point was not to stop the war, but to win it, without a single care about those who would be killed, and it's clear from season 2 that Metatron is aware of all that goes on in Heaven, so he knew Gabriel and the gang tried to burn Az in hellfire, and Metatron was totally okay with it... yet Aziraphale idiotically goes along with Metatron, instead of trusting the one being who's had his back all along. Az is no the innocent victim here. He's made many thoughtless, prideful choices that led them to this point, and he needs to get his act together and treat Crowley how he deserves.

The Metatron knew Azi wouldn't agree unless Crowley was in the mix - but he also knew Crowley would refuse. Clever way to break them up. After all, those two have, at this point, averted the Apocalypse twice at this point

I also think they both interpreted things differently in that last conversation. Crowley heard an offer to go back to being an angel and interpreted that as Aziraphale saying that he will never want Crowley as a demon, he has to change who he is and essentially go back to his abusive family to be with Aziraphale, so he refuses. Meanwhile, Aziraphale still thinks that heaven is good and the ones in power are to blame, not the system. He thinks that because Crowley has a good heart, him falling was a mistake and he should never have been made a demon. He thinks Crowley deserves to have that mistake fixed and get to go back to making stars, which was the happiest he ever saw Crowley and he thinks he can fix it and give Crowley what he "deserves" because he still hasn't fully deconstructed heaven's abuse and understood that they are not actually the good guys. So Crowley heard "I can make you worthy of heaven/worthy of me" and Aziraphale meant "I can make heaven worthy of you"

I loved your reaction, and I cried literal tears too! I've come to interpret the "you can't leave this bookshop"/"nothing lasts forever" line a bit differently. Crowley associates the bookshop as their safe place/home, so when he says you can't leave this bookshop, he's asking Aziraphale to stay for him/their relationship. Meanwhile, Aziraphale sees both of them going to heaven as a way to finally remove the target from their backs, to be safe, and to have a real life together. So when he says "nothing lasts forever" he means that he's willing to give up his bookshop and his creature comforts for a chance a life together with Crowley. They both want the same thing, but thinks the other rejecting them.

As heartbreaking as this finale was, it was SO JUICY and SO SATISFYING as a viewer who loves analyzing a piece of media to death. I'm not exaggerating when u say that I have thought about this idiots every single day since this aired lol. I was in the Sherlock fandom when we had to spend two years trying to solve the mystery cliffhanger of s2, and this is still a MILLION times more interesting. The "Final Fifteen" of Good Omens s2 creates such a smorgasbord of character analysis, people genuinely will write essays of meta every single day (still!) on new realisations, theories, headcanons, ideas, etc. The way this has genuinely inspired so much creativity in the fandom, even outside the usual fanart/fanfiction, is absolutely insane. People are writing English-class level essays FOR FUN (me included) and people are absolutely eating it up (ME INCLUDED). I'm so glad you finally got to this episode. I was crying AGAIN. You'd think after 6 months and countless rewatches.... 😭😭😭 There was a theory not long after season 2 aired, that the coffee was drugged, but it has been discounted by many fans now, as it takes away Azi's reasons for his actions. My personal head canon is that the coffee was a threat. "Give me Coffee or give me death", in other words, take the coffee and the job or you and Crowley will die. He took the job to protect Crowley, and keep him safe. He couldn't tell Crowley of the danger when they were in the bookshop, coz the Metabastard was watching them through the window. If you rewatch, you can see Azi looking at the window several times during that last conversation.

It's def a threat in my mind. And not only that, but when Aziraphale was recounting the convo, Metatron told Aziraphale that Heaven knew he had formed a "de facto partnership with the demon Crowley." Aziraphale's face and eyes when he said that are of sheer terror. They know. And they've got him by the angelic balls.

Welcome to our collective pain. When we all watched this in July we were left with many many months of unknowns on wether or not it would be renewed and it was the first time I’ve ever actually been seriously messed up with the ending of a show and if there would be any future opportunity to fix it. I generally don’t get attached to shows or characters but Good Omens and OFMD were the exceptions to that, and when I tell you I sobbed for days after this…. I’ve been anxiously waiting for you to get to this episode. It’s been truly enjoyable getting to see folks experiencing this show but I was sooooo stressed waiting for this episode because I know what happens. Crowley and Aziraphale love each other deeply but have the worst communication ever. Aziraphale wants to fix heaven, a heaven that cast out Crowley, and never should have. Crowley thinks Aziraphale can only love him as an angel despite that fact that Aziraphale loves him in any form. The “nothing lasts forever” was Az saying he can leave everything behind with Crowley by his side. Crowley thought he was saying THEY couldn’t last forever. It was all a messed up shit show of communication. My guess on what happened was that Crowleys life or existence was threatened by Metatron to be honest. I don’t think there was anything in the coffee but he did ask Nina, “does anyone choose death” between coffee or death and she responded that no one ever chooses death. I think a threat was made, whether openly or overtly, and Aziraphale is reacting to that. He chose the coffee aka “heaven”. But if you noticed, Aziraphale has now lost everything. Earth, humans, the bookstore and most importantly Crowley. His face in that elevator confirms he is ready to F stuff up in heaven. So glad season 3 was announced! Love your reaction as always. 🖤

One thing I didn't hear you mention is the strength of their miracle to hide Gabriel. When they tried to perform a teeny tiny half miracle, it was something incredibly powerful. Demons and angels have never collaborated before, so seeing just how powerful they are together is likely very scary for Heaven. I think this is a HUGE part of why the Metatron needed to split them up. He knew exactly how to manipulate Aziraphale into coming back to Heaven (cause the poor sweet angel just wants to do good) and he knew Crowley would refuse his angel's offer. Also, another thing worth thinking about is how could Aziraphale have said no to the Metatron? What would have happened if he turned down the offer? I personally don't think he could have without getting in some kind of trouble. So glad that ypu enjoyed watching this show as much as we all have! Thanks for your amazing reactions!
@tximop
@tximop 4 ай бұрын
Yes. That miracle’s power is something people tend to forget, surprisingly. It was a 25 Lazarii miracle. Meaning the power of that miracle could have resurrected 25 people! Shax even said the miracle was so powerful that only the “most powerful archangels could have performed it”. AND those two were barely trying! They were aiming for a fraction of what they are capable of doing! Just half a miracle! Neil even confirmed in Tumbler that the miracle was indeed powerful and it was because of those two, not because they were holding Jim’s hands. That power of the two of them combined will play a role in Season 3, pretty sure of it. Pretty sure also it’s why Metatron gave a sigh of relief when Azi stepped into the elevator.

I don’t think the coffee was drugged but I DO think the Metatron threatened Crowley (offscreen) and that’s why Zira went with him. His “Guardian of the Eastern Gate” tendencies came shining through and he was willing to sacrifice his own personal happiness to protect his love and Earth. He tried to convince Crowley to come with; he was literally begging, even though he knew Crowley couldn’t. But he still had to try anyway because he didn’t want to do it on his own. But Crowley was too caught up in finally saying out loud what had been unspoken for over 6000 years and couldn’t hear Zira thru the emotional turmoil. Sidenote -David Tennant should win an Emmy for that conversation because he punched us all in the heart with his expressions and voice cracking. The emotions my god 😭They were both trying to protect the other and ended up wounding each other deeply. So so heartbreaking all around 😭😭😭😭😭

Imagine being Azira. An angel who has devoted his whole life to being good. Someone who from the bottom of his heart belives that heaven is good. Azira helped save Job's kids and all he could think was "I must be bad bc I lied". He assumes that that Heave is incapable of doing bad things, but Angels aren't, even if they try to be good. He belive that heaven has to be good and if a good Angel is in charge, everything will be GOOD. Now imagine you are given a chance to make sure everything will go right. You don't want to take the chance at first, bc you don't want to leave the love of your life behind. You are given a chance to bring him with you. You belive he is perfectly good and taking him with you, making him into an angel would be your first good thing in this new position. You belive that person never should have fallen and now you get to fix that mistake. Next imagine telling this news to the love of your life and being turned down. Feeling rejected. Then imagine that person kissing you. After the rejection it almost feels like a goodbye. You are confused. You don't know what to do. All you know, is that all your existance you have belived heaven to be good. So in that state of confusion you automatically follow that only thing you could always rely on being the right choise. Well, the only thing in adition to your loved one, who is now saying things you can't yet proces. Azira is part of a cult and he doesn’t even realise it. Crowley knows how bad heaven can be, but in his own state of panic he doesn't realise to explain what he heard of the second coming. Both feel rejected and alone. Both feel confused. Both feel miserable. I feel terrible for both of them.

Two things occurred to me about this episode: 1-Aziraphale thinks Gabriel’s memory was wiped because he loved Bezelbub. He doesn’t know it’s because he did not want the Apocalypse. 2-Aziraphale does not know Crowley doesn’t want to be an angel again. Both of these things highlight their massive lack of real communication.

If you want to know more, I HIGHLY suggest checking out Sendarya's channel for analysis and theory videos. Her content is AMAZING! Just be warned that a few videos do mention s3's supposed epilogue, but this is public knowledge to the fandom, as it was revealed by Neil years ago when there was no plans of a sequel happening, so he just told people what he and Terry had planned (they had notes on a sequel, but never got around to writing it). It's completely normal to initially be disappointed in Aziraphale, because emotions and information is all over the place in the moment, but once you digest it, I can't really hold it against him. Armageddon round two was always coming, Crowley even says so in s1, so they both knew they were on borrowed time. Aziraphale is completely selfless and will sacrifice himself if it meant protecting everyone. Crowley is a runner, always has been (see s1), and wants to bottle what they have for as long as they have it. Neither are wrong in their decisions, and both want the same thing, but want to go about it very differently. I do feel for Crowley more, but I understand Aziraphale's reasoning. He doesn't want to hide anymore, doesn't want the threat of being hunted down that Gabriel and Beelzebub were told, wants to do good, wants to keep himself and Crowley safe and without chains. Both said/did wrong things in those final moments, especially Aziraphale I feel, but I still get it. The "I forgive you" stings like hell, but it's understandable why he'd be a bit pissed off that Crowley chose THAT moment to have their likely first kiss, not to mention that it just makes it more painful to leave. I was on board with the Coffee Theory for a bit (yes, this is a thing that exists in the fandom), but I realized it was kinda dumb imo and mostly stopped believing in it because of the above paragraph. Some are still on board, some believe in other theories (some aren't very good tho imo), but I just believe it's Aziraphale doing what makes sense for his character.

I agree. It does also make sense that while Aziraphale wants what Gabriel and Beelzebub have, he doesn’t want to have to be looking over his shoulder the entire time. That’s no way to exist. This is his chance to fight that mindset and I love him for it. 😊

Love your reaction! I loved the kiss because A) I wasn't spoiled beforehand that it would happen B) I am ancient, so I remember back when this book came out and one phrase, "Get in, Angel," launched a thousand ships (er, only one ship, but it launched it very hard) and that was back in the day when you never, ever expected it to become canon so C) Even as progressive as Pratchett was, and as Gaiman is, they are/were both older white dudes of the type who do not always get it and frankly don't always try, so I literally never, ever expected anything actually physical to happen--I honestly thought Gaiman would be, at best, like, "Oh, and then they held hands," and that would be bigger than I dreamed back in the 90s but most of all because D) it's the middle season, so to quote Ted Lasso, "Look, point is, fellas, if all those attractive people with their amazing apartments and interesting jobs, usually in some creative field, can go through some lighthearted struggles and still end up happy, then so can we." So I think (oh God, I hope I hope I hopeIhopeIhopeIhope) that they get a happy and well-written ending. Also, something I think is interesting about Aziraphale returning to heaven because, "I can make a difference," is fascinating to me, because Terry Pratchett wrote a book (Jingo) where this is one of the themes: Do you go along with a bad organization hoping to soften the blow? When the country is at war and they replace the leader with a bad man, the main character refuses to be part of it, later thinking, "He should've stayed on and made things just a little less-- No. That never worked." And later he gets to discover what would have happened if he HAD gone along with it, and it wasn't good. So I can't help but think maybe/hopefully that's something Pratchett intended to work into Good Omens, too. (Hilarious book, btw. Soooo many clever, cynical thoughts about bad leaders and warfare, such as, "It is a long-cherished tradition among a certain type of military thinker that huge casualties are the main thing. If they are on the other side then this is a valuable bonus." If you ever get around to it, do read some Pratchett! His writing is terribly funny, but there's also a sweetness to it, a love for humanity, for all of our nonsense and hijinks and stupidity.)

I am really concerned for Aziraphale in Season 3. I think he is in for some very tough and dangerous moments. From what we witnessed in this episode, Gabriel nearly had his memory erased because he refused to go along with the next apocalypse. Crowley figured that out, but we did not see him explain that to Aziraphale. So Aziraphale thinks he can go to heaven with this powerful promotion and "fix" things. Then the Metatron tells him that he will be helping with the second coming, which means destroying the earth. Will Aziraphale object (following Gabriel) or think it is his duty to follow blindly without question? If he objects, what will happen to him?

How can people think Azi will work to help end Earth? That angel never did anything that goes against his conscience or what he believes is good and right. Hurting people is never good. He wouldnt even kill the antichrist in season 1 even though that kid can end the world. He acted so sad when he thought Crowley killed goats and was going to whack Job’s kids. Eventhough Heaven was claiming it was what was supposed to be done. That angel lied to Gabe’s face to save Job and his family despite fully believing he will fall and become a demon. Is it easier to believe Azi chose Heaven over Crowley rather that Azi choosing to do what is right and protect Earth and Crowley with the chance he was given? Whether going to Heaven was the right decision is still debatable. But his intentions are clear. That angel is not going to sit down and risk the Second Coming if he can do something about it.

LOVED watching your reaction to this series, it was such a joy to relive my first viewing vicariously through you! I have a theory about the final scene that Aziraphale was intentionally setting Crowley off because he (Aziraphale) realized that he was in a position where he couldn't safely turn down the Metatron's offer. He needed to make sure Crowley wouldn't also get caught in it-he just didn't expect it to go so disastrously because he wasn't expecting Crowley to choose that moment to confess. Take a closer look at Azirapale's face right before he re-enters the bookshop-he looks UPSET, as opposed to the happiness he displays once he's inside. People have also pointed out that there's two moments where he seems to be mouthing something: first right after he starts explaining what the Metatron said, it looks like he mouths something like "We need to get help/out", then right after the kiss there's something like "I didn't mean it, I lied." You can even hear the "I l-" if you listen closely, which some people have also thought is him starting to say "I love you." The idea of intentional lipreading is supported by the zombies trying to read Aziraphale's lips in ep4, and throughout the last scene as Crowley is talking, you can see Aziraphale glancing nervously towards the window as if he's worried that the Metatron is watching them.

@@letolethe3344agree. That angel lied to save Job despite thinking he will fall. That’s not someone blinded by Heaven and just following what he’s told. That’s an angel who knows what true goodness is and is constantly arguing and insisting how Heaven should act and what it should do. He practically wont shut up when he found out about what was helpening to Job and he was arguing with archangels! His bosses! He’s afraid of what Heaven can do, of course he is, he’d be stupid not to. Those archangels are powerful. But he never acts against his conscience even if it goes against Heavenly edict. Running away and leaving everything in Heaven and Hell’s hands goes against everything Azi is. It was not about choosing Heaven over Crowley. It was about doing what was good and right. Will he succeed? Did he make the wrong decision? We wont know until Season 3. But I predict “give me liberty or give me death” may have more meaning in season 3 and Azi going to Heaven will be a spark of something happening finally to change things.

@@tximopYes! Well-stated. It took me a while to come to this understanding. I have a feeling one or both of the following will happen: Crowley and Aziraphale will end up having to sacrifice their powers or will otherwise become human (sort of completing a trajectory that started when they began adapting to and loving human stuff) and/or heaven and hell will reconcile, perhaps forced to do so by C & A, or cease to exist. I say this because one of the big messages of the book/series is that humanity can really only look to itself for the best and worst it can be; that humanity has huge potential for good and evil and neither "side" really helps either way.

@@letolethe3344 my prediction is this: We will find out that Metatron has been pulling the strings all this time. God has stopped directing things a while back (we have not heard God’s narration in recent centuries, only in old eras). Maybe She had decided it’s time to give angels free will? I dont know. So being God’s mouthpiece, Metatron will lose his position and status. So he pretends to still be giving God’s orders. Azi will probably realize this and cause a revolution in Heaven. I wouldnt be surprised if it comes about in an unintentional way (like telling the other angels how good sushi is🤣) and making them realize that they have the freewill to decide their own choices and act on their own conscience (just like Azi had been doing, with Crowley’s help). This revolution idea is from the “give me liberty or give me death” quote where Nina got her shop’s name. The quite is from the American Revolution. Metatron also made comments about this in a scene that seems completely useless to the story (hmm..) Anyway, I think we will still have Heaven and Hell but they will not be directed by a tyrannical ruler anymore. I dont know how that will work, but if Azi and Crowley can do it, anything is possible, I guess?🤣 I’m pretty sure the fact that those two can make super powerful miracles together will also come into play into this whole story😊 according to Shax, their miracle could only have been performed by the most powerful archangle. And I believe Neil confirmed in Tumbler that it was because of the two of them, not due to Jim being there.

I think the saddest thing is that in Aziraphale's mind, he's doing the right thing and can fix heaven to be how it should be, but Crowley knows from experience, both from being cast out himself for questioning destroying everything and from what they were going to do to Gabriel for saying no to the apocalypse, that they will never let Aziraphale change heaven, they will force him into line or discard him if he doesn't obey. Aziraphale has next to no chance of actually being able to change heaven, and he will likely be in danger if he tries. And this is the one time we see Crowley putting his own well being over Aziraphale, he knows he could never go back to heaven, even to try to protect Aziraphale from them, if it means giving up who he is. And I think the Metatron knew that, which is exactly why he did it, to make sure that Aziraphale and Crowley are kept apart as they plan the end of the world, they are stronger together (I mean they set off alarms in heaven trying to perform a tiny miracle together, imagine what would happen if they really tried) and the Metatron knows they can suceed in ending the world if he keeps them apart.

Great points! Especially regarding what Crowley witnessed during Gabriel’s trial. Gabriel knew exactly what he needed to do to get out of there and that was disagree with the status quo. But Crowley's idea of running away is completely pointless because of Heaven ends the universe then everywhere will go, even alpha centauri. He and Aziraphale will not be safe. Az knows this, he has never agreed to running away, he wants to stand and fight. Preferably with Crowley by his side but if he won't come then he'll do it alone.

Inlove with your reaction videos!❤️ My take: It’s certainly romantic to think Azi should not go to Heaven and run away with Crowley instead. But that’s not Aziraphale. He didnt run away with Crowley in Season one when the world was ending and he thinks he can do something about it. If he ran away with Crowley now, they will be running and hiding forever (or until Heaven manages to finally end everything). They dont have the power Beelz and Gabe have. And that’s not good enough for Azi. He’s being given a chance to do something about it and keep them safe finally. Did he make a wrong choice? We dont know and that’s not the point. The point is running away and hiding is not Azi. He’s the Guardian of the Eastern Gate. He protected Jim from demons in his bookshop, sacrificing *gasp* books! He protects. He stands for what he believes in. It’s easy to forget how strong this angel is because of his soft exterior and enthusiastic and happy demeanor. But that angel is stubborn as hell. That angel lied to Gabe’s face to save Job even though he believed he will go to Hell for it. That’s not someone who’s blinded by Heaven. That’s an angel who still has faith in goodness - in what Heaven is actually supposed to stand for. That’s what Crowley liked about him, after all. If he ran away with Crowley, he’s betraying himself. He will protect Earth and Crowley even if it means going up to Heaven alone amongst angels who thinks he’s a traitor. He’s not choosing Heaven over Crowley. He’s doing this partly for Crowley and partly simply because that angel is the best angel in Heaven. Muriel showed us that not all angels are like the archangels. Some are just ignorant because they were never shown any different. I predict Azi leading a sort of revolution in Heaven. Something that could only happen with him having that position. “Give me Liberty or give me death”- the phrase where Nina’s coffee shop name came from is a famous quote from the american revolution when they rebelled against a tyrannical rule *ahem metatron*. Ironic that Metatron said nobody chooses “death” and how that’s so “predictable”.

Said it before, I’ll say it before- this is like a tragic comedy where two ppl propose marriage to each other and somehow end up breaking up. Aziraphale didn’t want to go to Heaven, even with the promotion, until the Metatron said he could restore Crowley and go together with him. I think the reason this tempted Aziraphale so much is exactly bc he knew what Crowley has been through and he wants his friend to have the opportunity to have a wrong righted, to have what was rightfully his restored to him. But he still hadn’t actually decided when he told Crowley. It wasn’t until Crowley issued an ultimatum- leave with me and never be able to return (like Gabriel and Bee) or go to Heaven and lose me. But as much as it goes against Crowley’s nature to become an angel again, it goes against Aziraphale’s to turn away those in need- in this case, Heaven and Earth. Just like what we saw last season when Aziraphale refused to abandon the earth, and when he refused to abandon Gabriel at the beginning of this one. Crowley stormed away from him both times as well. Another thing: it was obvious to the viewers that Crowley was trying to confess his feelings because we were privy to his point-of-view when he was having those talks with Nina and then with Nina and Maggie. But Aziraphale wasn’t. He just offered Crowley smth huge, working together on the same side to fix Heaven and protect the Earth, and Crowley rejected him. Crowley then interrupts himself and does not actually say anything different than he said last season- let’s run away together. Of course it’s going to be a no, again, and why should that break them when it didn’t before? Aziraphale has asked for help before, but he’s never actively begged Crowley. I suspect he feels just as rejected. Plus, he doesn’t understand how Crowley took what he said about the bookshop not lasting forever. The last time Aziraphale actually said “I forgive you” to Crowley was last season, when Crowley called him stupid. And in this season, Crowley called him an idiot before…assaulting him? Shocking him? Trying to tempt him? Aziraphale clearly is confused as hell by what’s happening and feels wounded by it- hence the tears. He didn’t expect anything like that (why would he?) and he seems to conclude that it was meant to be a hurtful follow-up to calling him an idiot. The “I forgive you” was not for Crowley’s love confession, bc Crowley did not actually make a love confession unless you A) knew the backstory behind his actions and B) were not an angel with no experience of kissing. The time in this season when Aziraphale last forgave Crowley (without actually saying so out loud) was when Crowley came back after initially refusing to help with Gabriel. At which point he did the apology dance where he admitted that Aziraphale was right, even though we know Crowley didn’t actually think so, he just came back bc he was concerned for Aziraphale. And from Aziraphale’s POV, he WAS right in the end. He not only saved Gabriel, but Gabriel changed and became a better person. Plus, Aziraphale was able to get Heaven and Hell to stop squabbling long enough to prevent a war. If Gabriel, one of the worst, most stubborn, most powerful angels, could change, why not Heaven itself? And why can’t Crowley have some faith in him? In what they could accomplish together? (From Azira’s POV) I really think the disgust on Aziraphale’s face after the kiss when he wiped his lips was real, btw; not bc he was disgusted by Crowley, but bc he was freaked out by kissing. He had the same reaction to eating for the first time. He had to get used to it before he liked it. And this was really not the best circumstance under which to get comfortable with another new bodily action. I don’t think either of them betrayed the other, but I think they both felt betrayed.

I do think Aziraphale is very worried about what will happen to Crowley in the future. After Judgement Day Crowley could either be tortured for Eternity in Hell or be destroyed by Heaven (I’m not religious-not sure what most Christians believe about this). Also, I think Metatron might have made a veiled threat to Aziraphale (about Crowley) that we didn’t see. So when Aziraphale offers to make Crowley an angel, he thinks he’s saving him from eternal torture/destruction. And again, when he chooses Heaven, he thinks he can stall a bad outcome for Crowley. Aziraphale does cross boundaries with Crowley too much, partly because his appetites are large, which he needs to become aware of. I don’t think Aziraphale is just full of himself-he really does love Crowley. We need to see Aziraphale come to Crowley’s rescue or perform an act of service for him next season. Aziraphale also needs to apologize. (His apology dance would have to be a full ballet.)

I have silently watched your reactions to both season 1 and 2 and have loved seeing your thoughts on them! In my opinion Aziraphale returning to heaven feels completely in character - for one, he loves Earth and humanity, and his job is to protect them, so a part of him feels that if he is in charge of heaven he will better be able to protect humanity from any Armageddon Heaven is planning. He is also doing it to protect himself and Crowley, I definitely think he had hope that Crowley would go with him, not because he wants to change who Crowley is, but because he truly believes that together they could make a difference and he saw this as an opportunity for them to truly be together openly and safely. The Metatron was SO manipulative from what we saw, and essentially veiled this as an opportunity for the both of them, when in reality it was a threat, and Aziraphale is definitely concerned about that - he now knows the Metatron is aware of his and Crowley's partnership throughout the centuries, but how much does he know - and importantly does he know about the swap and that they are not actually immune to Holy Water/Hellfire? Essentially putting both of them in danger. During the confession, a lot of what the 2 of them said was completely misunderstood by the other, because, as Nina said - they don't talk. The 'you can't leave this bookshop' and 'nothing last forever' Crowley definitely took that as 'nothing last forever, not even us,' however, in my opinion to Aziraphale this was him saying that he would willingly give up his bookshop, something that he loves dearly, if it means him and Crowley can be safe and happy, it wasn't a rejection, immediately after when Crowley put his glasses on there was HOPE in Azi's eyes, he thought Crowley was coming with him. Even the kiss is misunderstood in that it was an act of love for Crowley's part, but it was also filled with his desperation and anxiety, and Aziraphale as an angel can literally FEEL love, so my theory is that he felt both the love and negative emotions associated with that kiss mixed together and it left him shocked, confused but also potentially seeing it as a temptation attempt, which is why he defaulted to 'I forgive you,' because when panicked he has a habit of putting his foot in his mouth. (He was also looking out of the window ALOT throughout the whole scene so I think he was also anxious about the Metatron seeing/hearing.) I don't think there is any coffee theory, it is just pure miscommunication and manipulation. Sorry for the long comment, I have very strong opinions on this! I am so looking forward to season 3 and praying these 2 get their happy ending! 💛

@@ChachiSays yes exactly, I think because of their silliness, we forget that the two of them are not completely stupid. I suspect that if not threatened directly, Aziraphale likely understood what the Metatron said to be the veiled threat that it was, so in his mind he also maybe didn't feel he had a choice but to go back in order to protect Crowley, whether Crowley agreed to go with him or not. (Plus, they also have a habit of not telling each other things they know might panic the other - as far as we are aware Crowley didn't mention the extreme sanctions and Azi didn't mention his conversation with Shax.) I personally don't believe in the spiked coffee theory, but rather I think Aziraphale is still "brainwashed." But I liken it to people who have been brought up in extreme religions and try to escape in adulthood, but growing up in such a way has had lasting effects on them that are difficult to heal from. He got pulled back in thru manipulation. He told Metatron outright that he didn't want to go back to Heaven. At that point, Metatron pulled out all the stops to sweeten the deal by offering to restore Crowley (which Heaven knew Crowley would never agree to so it was no risk for Heaven to offer it in order to manipulate Aziraphale), and it worked a treat. I had some ideas that perhaps Heaven wanted to separate them so that they couldn't stop the Second Coming the way they stopped Armageddon, and Heaven knows how powerful Aziraphale and Crowley are together now because of the miracle they performed together to hide Jimbriel. Another thought is that Aziraphale is walking into a trap, because as Crowley pointed out, they recently tried to destroy Aziraphale in hellfire, and now they want to make him Supreme Archangel? That's super suss. Another thing Aziraphale might be thinking is that the only true way he can spend Eternity with Crowley is if they are on the same side. After the big Judgement Day (based on historical mythologies, not GO) demons are destroyed after the Second Coming, so maybe even Gabriel and Beelzebub won't be together for Eternity? If Aziraphale could "restore" Crowley, then perhaps they'd have a shot at Eternity together? Thoughts like that may have been why Aziraphale relayed that info to Crowley in such a giddy manner and said, "it could be like the old times, only even nicer." What do you think? I don't think either one of them wanted to break up. Aziraphale told Crowley, "Work with me! We can BE together! I NEED YOU!" I believe they both want to be together, but things are just too messed up right now with Heavens ways. I think Aziraphale believes he may be able to change the rules in Heaven so that he and Crowley can still be together later for Eternity... maybe???

Metatron was very suss in all these final scenes. When he went into the coffee shop and asked Nina if anyone ever asked for "Death," and when she said, "No, no one ever asks for death," at that time Metatron said, "No, I don't suppose they do; so predictable." That makes it seem like he wants to give Aziraphale a coffee as a veiled threat. As in, if you don't take this coffee, your next offer will be death. At that time, when Metatron told Aziraphale they needed to go have a walk, first Aziraphale looked to Crowley to get his blessing to go chat to Metatron, and Crowley said, "Go on, they can't get any weirder." Metatron followed Aziraphale out and gave Crowley that obviously evil glare. A little earlier when Metatron entered the shop with the coffee and none of the other angels recognized him, for some unknown reason, Metatron turned to Crowley and said, "What about you, demon? Do YOU know me?" What even was that about?? Sorry for my essay lol. Good Omens makes me write paragraphs. I am really interested in what other people think about these things, though. I'm not just trying to rant for ranting's sake lol.

There is a fan theory that one of the windows is open and Metatron is outside just out of view eavesdropping on their conversation. And that Aziraphale senses him nearby. So some of the things Aziraphale said may not be his true feeling, but just said to fool Metatron.

Aziraphale risked his very existence to protect "Jim". He risked becoming a fallen angel to save Job's children. Of course he's going to risk his own happiness to try and make things right in Heaven, especially as Arma-bloody-geddon 2.0 is just around the corner. Can't have a happily ever after if Earth and the universe is destroyed and Crowley along with it. His choices were to stay and enjoy a brief happiness with Crowley, or return to Heaven to at least try to save it all.

I don’t think Aziraphale risked his existence in protecting “Jim.” I think the other Archangels were bluffing about having the book of life, they just wanted Gabriel back to punish him and take his position more formally. If anyone has the book of life is either the Metatron, which is a scary thought, or God. And the Metatron suspiciously didn’t care to look for Gabriel.Funny enough protecting Jim gave Crowley an advantage because he found out about Armageddon 2.0 I do think the metatron will prove a more difficult challenge if he can threaten to delete Crowley from the book of life if Aziraphale doesn’t obey.
@JoMadge
@JoMadge 6 ай бұрын
@@moondivine2288 I agree they were bluffing, but did Aziraphale and Crowley know that? It was still a risk, regardless. I actually suspect only God/Christ can utilize the Book of Life, as part of the final judgement (which is part of the Second Coming, of course).

He has no home, unless Hell do indeed give him his flat back, but it was hardly a home to him. Continue to live in his car is an option, but he doesn't like it (nor does the Bentley, which is slightly sentiant). Muriel doesn't know how to run a bookshop, and especially doesn't know how Aziraphale runs it, i.e don't sell any books. Crowley might see to that at least, not having the heart to allow Aziraphale's possessions to leave the place Crowley has considers his second home. Or he won't care, who knows! XD (He had no qualms throwing books around when Aziraphale was away).

My theory is that Aziraphale had no choice. Metatron said something we weren't privy to. Metatron asked, when ordering that coffee for Aziraphale, "do they ever choose death?" And I think that was some kind of hint that there was some kind of hidden agenda or threat to Crowley that Aziraphale either couldn’t tell Crowley about, or he didn't know about.

The worst part when I first watched this was the not knowing if season 3 would happen. There are a lot of different theories out there as to what happened at the end. Coffee, body swap, Aziraphale simply reacting to trauma and much more. I have quite a bit of my own theories regarding several characters. But as far as the Aziraphale going to heaven thing, I believe the metatron knew how to manipulate the situation to break up Crowly and Aziraphale . He knew Aziraphale would want to do the right thing. Aziraphale really believes he can fix heaven. He knew Crowley would not pick heaven. (No one ever asks for death) Either way, I am sticking to my belief that Neil told the truth oh so many years ago when he said these two wind up in a cottage in the South Downs together. Until season 3 shows me otherwise, I am klinging to that truth.

Something that really confuses me about Aziraphales decision is, when the Metatron first made the offer, Aziraphale refused. He understood he could replace Gabriel but said "I don't want to go back to heaven". The thing that seemingly convinced him was that Crowley could come with him and be an angel again. But then when Crowley makes clear he doesnt't want that, Aziraphale barely hears him and is suddenly convinced that it's the right thing and HIS chance to change things. I cannot make sense of that change..
@nothinginparticilar
@nothinginparticilar 21 күн бұрын
My guess: the thing that actually convinced Aziraphale was Metatron basically threatening Crowley. I mean when Metatron said that he knows about their partnership and that if things stayed as they were, this relationship would be considered irregular. It was at these words that Aziraphale's face toughened. We haven't seen his face after the offer to restore Crowley's angelic status. Everything else was later and may well have been a game Aziraphale was determined to play to protect Crowley

i think ultimately azi loves the world more than crowley. like he wants the heaven to be good because that's what heaven is meant to be. and he wants to save the people because he loves humanity. and leaving with crowley and leaving them all alone is not smth azi is willing to do. like imagine the first season if azi didn't try to do anything, if neither of them did. the only reason the humanity is still standing is because azi and crowley /did smth/. so how can azi just leave especially after knowing that heaven are tying to do smth again? he can't. he'd blame himself forever if anything were to happen.

My stance on this remains that yes, Aziraphale wants to change things in Heaven because he thinks this will make things better for everyone, but, as you said, with everything that he and Crowley have been working towards, there needs to be a bigger motivator, because nothing, and I mean NOTHING could have gotten him away from Crowley. We've seen all throughout the first and especially the second season how much he loves him. So I firmly believe that, because we didn't see the entire conversation between Aziraphale and the Metatron, just bits and pieces of it, there was a threat involved. Remember them talking about the Book of Life earlier in the season? The Metatron could have said something along the lines of: "I'm going to erase Crowley from the book of life UNLESS you take over as supreme archangel. Whether you do that with or without Crowley is up to you." I'm not sure about the coffee. There may or may not have been something in it. But a threat seems very credible to me. Also explains why Aziraphale is so extremely nervous and keeps glancing out of the window as he comes back to talk to Crowley. Everything is hinging on that conversation for him.

@@ChachiSays I sincerely hope they will revisit that scene in S3. It would put a lot of things into perspective. 6 months and I'm still figuring out what everything means and why it hurts so much. You have a whole lot of theories to digest if you want to embrace the agony. 🥲 "Nothing lasts forever" was in response to Crowley saying "You can't leave this bookshop." Remember these two have had to speak in code to each other for their entire existence, and they are really awful at it! So when Crowley says "You can't leave this bookshop", he meant "Please don't leave me! I love you." Aziraphale interpreted "You can't leave this bookshop," as Crowley saying, "You love this bookshop. It makes you happy. I can't allow you to sacrifice your happiness for me or for Heaven." So Aziraphale's response of "Oh Crowley! Nothing lasts forever' meant "I love you so much. I would sacrifice everything I own so we can be free to be together, even if it is in Heaven." You have to understand where Aziraphale's head (and heart) is. He found out that the head angel and the duke of hell are in love and running away together, something his love has been begging him to do for years (decades?/ centuries?) and he didn't think it was possible. He is offered the 'best" job opportunity an angel can receive, and, that if he takes it, he can "fix" heaven, so it won't be so cruel to lesser angels and humanity. He can retain access to the worldly things he loves ("coffee"/food, books, music), and return the being he loves to full angelic status, removing all the barriers Aziraphale thinks have kept him from Crowley all this time. No longer the forbidden fruit, nor the serpent, literally sent to tempt. He finds out that the love he dared not indulge, is reciprocal! That Crowley wants to be with him! Then it all turns to dust in his hands. Crowley turns down Aziraphale's dream come true and leaves in the most heartbreaking way. He finds out that he will be expected to facilitate the second coming, again dooming earth, separating him for eternity from Crowley and the worldly things he loves, presumably by his own future actions. His wildest dream has become a nightmare. Metatron's offer also doubles as a threat. "If you return to Heaven as Supreme Archangel your "de facto partnership" with the demon "could" be legitimized, but we know what you've been up to, and a different Supreme Archangel may not be willing to ignore it. Gabriel just disobeyed Heaven for the love of a demon, having it happen again could look like 'an institutional problem'." What choice did he have? Stay with Crowley, and wait for the hammer to drop from Michael or Uriel, whichever one becomes the new SA? Or take the job and beg Crowley to come with him, so they can be together, and as safe as possible? Or, when he realizes Crowley won't go with him, take the job which will give him the power to change Heaven, so eventually he can make it safer for he and Crowley to be together, but in the meanwhile, he will have the power to keep Crowley safe(r) by leaving him behind and having a very public breakup. There was no winning option. So on the surface, you can be angry at Aziraphale, but once you understand what he's dealing with, he's in agony as well.
