We are Tony and Jane and we are living in and renovating our old Relais De Poste/Coaching Inn.
We live in the middle of France in a region called The Berry.
We have over 40 rooms to renovate so there is plenty of work to be done. We also love to trawl the local Brocantes, flea markets and antique shops for quirky furnishings and furniture.
We love to find out about local history and often visit other peoples buildings including our friends’ Chateaux.

"La Digue" is one of the smaller islands of the Seychelles. The Seychelles remained part of France until 1814, when it passed to the British. It is still possible to observe strong French influences in the reality of the Seychelles, not only in surnames and geographical names, but also in the cuisine and language.

Great double header Jane! I love a good mystery. Perhaps the Harry Potter room was originally a jail for hooligans. Wasn’t this a former coaching and had a lot of military traffic etc? Maybe it was a place to keep prisoners in transit to a prison? The original door may have been Removed to add the stairs which appear to have been added at a later date? It might also explain why the stones were used on the floor in the room above it. There was no digging out!☠️ Anyway, great vlog(s) and thank you for taking us along.

I think the lower room was a wine cellar and sink to clean the bottles. Upper just storage room or linen cupboard. Or they could have kept veg and meats in that room didn't want people helping themselves hence the metal bars. Those stairs are lovely though. Don't drink any of that seriously. Empty them and keep the bottles. Ask Edd and Anna Holmes of 'Bordeaux Life' they own a winery might be able to help you identify. Happy Birthday Tony all the best wishes. I hope you haven't made yourself ill Jane :( On further reflection I would just use it for storage and just make it available for that sure you two have things to store.

Since the liquid bubbles and it can bleach stone, perhaps what was transferred into the bottles so many years ago would/could have been (or is) hydrochloric acid. You might want to contact local officials and let them know. Whatever you do, do not dump it into your waste pipes, do not add water to it, the liquid could be very toxic and dangerous.

The recess under the sink might have been for a bucket. Does the sink have a hole? 🤔(My grandparents in Burgundy, France had a stone sink with a bucket underneath. They didn’t use modern soap on the dishes so the water (with any leftover food bits) could be mixed with other leftovers for the pigs. They didn’t have running water. You had to fetch it from a pump/ spring that wasn’t very close to home. As a result, every drop was important. 😅🤓😊

How cool to finally get into sealed rooms! I'm not expert, but the timber frame construction with waddle and daub looks like 16th century construction. I also wonder if the wall with the tiny door in it was originally an exterior wall? They needed more room, so they built on from outside? With the stone basin, and the wine - a larder perhaps?

Maybe you can take down the cupboard (closet?) and enlarge the gite into that space / room. A little extra floor space for the gite and that room wouldn't go to waste againa win-win. Anyway, the little sink would make a nice talking point for the bigger room...BTW, I think you can tell the age of the wine by the shape of the bottle. I know Burgundy's wines shape evolved over time. If you're closer to Bordeaux you'd have to look to see how its shape / size likewise evolved. A little project for your neice's smartphone I think...
@notquiteachateaudiy

We haven't decided what to do with it yet Claudine but yes we could open that up to either one of our gites. The bottles were super heavy and thick so pretty old we think, they were mineral water bottles but had been re-used for home made wines.

If the outside wall is not being rendered till September what stops the rain coming in.

It has been open to the elements from both the roof and the walls for years so I don't think that it will matter lol

Maybe that room was a separate building (it looks older than the other ajoining part) At some point the whole wing was added on and built onto that prison cell room !!!! ?

I think you may be right Steve, that is a medieval part of our buildings and I think over hundreds of years there have been additions and alterations to it.

@@notquiteachateaudiy ……… if it was a Relais de Poste as I think you once told us and an old coaching Inn. Then they could have transported prisoners on coaches and stopped there overnight. They would have needed a prison window-barred room like that. !!!

Could the gap under the sink have been for a fire to heat water? Could you link the room to the gite?
@notquiteachateaudiy

Hi Sue, I think that would probably smoke the room out, I thought it might be for a bucket to drain the sink

You need Jesus to turn that water in wine. Sorry, bad joke. Yes, it does appear to be corrosive. I assume one of the minerals may contain sulfur. That would explain the nasty smell and the bubbling.. At one point you and Tony were in the top and you said you better be careful cause you did't want to fall through. Tony said, no, cause you would make a mess. I cracked up laughing. He is hilarious. There are some cool thing there. That rail thing looks like old fashioned curtain rods that had pully system to open and close. I hope you can reuse the coke hook. It is nice to meet your neice and neighbor. Crack on Tony. Great job. At least the window is in for weather protection till Sept when the boys come back. After all the bad weather you had, I hope the summer is great. We are expected higher Temps here by next Sunday. Enjoy one another and see you in the next one. Cheers.❤

Well you never know Ann it could have been a jail, the stairs are definitely newer than that room, around 1800s I suspect whereas the room is probably 1500s
