Excited about the new Schuyler RSV Quentel, but not sure if you'll like the translation? Wondering how the RSV reads, but don't want to spend over $200 on one? Well check out this vintage RSV by Thomas Nelson that I was able to score for less than 1/10th the cost of the new Quentel. This edition can easily be found on eBay for around $20 and makes for an excellent RSV starter Bible. This particular example has a genuine leather cover, spine ribs, a red ribbon and beautifully opaque paper. The combination of its attributes makes for a spectacular reader, and a wonderful starter copy of the RSV. Enjoy!
The best Bible out there, is the one you read! May God bless you and your Bible studies!

The RSV has been underestimated as a translation. It is a good translation and very useful in serious Bible study.

My Hebrew scripture prof used it instead of the NRSV.

@@GuruishMike apparently your Hebrew professor used wisdom and research knowledge. The RSV is a better overall translation between the two. The NRSV has some outstanding renderings, but it does not do well with it's approach to "gender-accurate" language.

I have that exact edition. It is my favorite RSV Bible. Simple, easy to read, no ghosting (thanks to the tan pages). Mine has a beautiful aged look. No broken spine in mine. I plan on changing out the ribbon. Also, I plan on getting another like it for a rebind (because who needs Schuyler’s typos).

Great review. There are a few red letter 52 RSVs out there. They are rare and the red is very light.

Nice. My Schuyler will come in today, but that looks like a really nice inexpensive option. I like the opaque paper, and I also like the older typefaces they used to use back then.

Love this so much. I found a similar Nelson RSV at a garage sale for $2, new in the box. Mine is imitation leather, and a more cramped typeface. It also has the drop caps. And I fully agree about the smell. Very nice review.

Garage sales, used book stores and provide great deals. I tend to stay away from the hype. I'm still not sure why anyone short on money would pay more than $20 for a bible unless they are a pastor or teacher. So many great deals out there and the weak link in Christianity isn't the translations. It's FOLLOWING.

That's one advantage of real leather over synthetic leather- the smell. You don't get that with synthetic leather. My Bible is a Thomas Nelson KJV Leathersoft Center Column Reference Bible

I learned something today! I didn't know a group of sewn together pages was called a"signature". I have several signatures separating in my well loved, heavily used Nelson Scofield NKJV from the'80s. They don't bother me though, as long as pages and signatures don't start actually falling out of my Bible! Thanks for the lesson. :)

I love the font style of the old Nelson editions. That looks alot like an old Cambridge Morocco grain . I had an NASB SCR EDITION by Moody from 1977 once with that same grain style. I gave it away like a big dummy. Now finding one is rare esp in good shape. Thanks for sharing.

I was getting these for a buck at the used bookstore because I love them, but all mine have red gilding, not gold. I have one in my truck, in my pew rack at church (I got my place in a pew, thank you very much), and two in my office. One went to Africa with me for a month long mission trip, and was the subject of me very first YT video! There is one at the bookstore now, so I will see if it has gold gilding. And I love the pictures! All of mine have drop caps.

Nelson is apparently re-printing the RSV as part of the "Sovereign" collection. It's nice to see this version back in print.

Thank you for a great review. I love the Classic look of this Bible.My aunt has several Bibles from the 1950’s era. They have that classic look . I appreciate your tip about the Ribbon. E bay is a good place to find Bibles.

There's just something about Bibles from the 50s. They're really something special, and the majority of my collection is from that era. The paper is outstanding, they had a good selection of leathers, and even the ribbons were getting pretty good.

Ironically, just yesterday before seeing this video, I ordered off ebay a 1959 printing Nelson RSV bible. It has double column and center column references. I've already been notified it's "in the mail." Can't wait to get it!

@@RustyBibles The RSV is the only translation I was lacking in my many bibles collection. I recently got an ASV 1901, and have began to love it as well. After learning that the RSV was it's revision, well there you go! I've had a NRSV for several years, but use it only seldom. I think the coming RSV will complete my collection for awhile. When one owns around 20 translations, a lot of time can be enjoyed reading them. Thanks for that video!!

@@makarov138 I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, 20+ translations will keep you busy for quite some time! I think as of right now there are around 1,500 english translations. There's a great resource out there that gives a quick summary of many of them. I'm hoping to get my hands on a copy; when I do I'll put up a video to share my findings!

I bought a 1952 RSV for $20 and had it rebound for about $100. Turned out great. I have a copy of the NT & Psalms Pocket RSV2CE I use on the go and then my RSV for home reading and study

Getting better typeset kind of would defeat the cost of picking up one of those up. Even the recent pre comfort print Thomas Nelson editions look much nicer than those made in the 1950s.

I have this exact bible, except in a 1952 printing, and missing the ribbon. The back page has more information than yours though and says the typeface is 9 pt Linotype Electra with 9.5 pt leading. Red-letter RSVs do exist but they are quite uncommon.

I'd avoid the new Schuyler RSV Bible as it has typos, e.g. at Numbers 16:6 where it reads 'comapany' instead of 'company'. This would appear to be a problem with the RSV source text as this particular typo is found in another currently available edition of RSV which I possess. Strangely, this particular typo is not found in older RSVs - which suggests that errors have crept in at some point. Unfortunately Schuyler didn't proofread the source text properly before publishing their Quentel. So the question is: how many more typos are there? And why has the publisher of this premium Bible not devoted enough effort to ensuring that there are no typos? And why I should I pay Schuyler's price for a flawed product?
@RustyBibles
@RustyBibles 2 жыл бұрын
Another KZfaqr on here suggested that the text was scanned into the computer and the type was automatically generated from that scanned image. That might explain how the errors showed up, but I agree with you that the text should have been proofread better. I'm all for getting premium Bibles out to the market, but there should be a certain level of care that goes into the proofreading. Especially since, you know... this is the Bible... Cambridge had a similar issue with their new KJV Topaz where some of the footnotes in the Pauline letters got tacked on to the end of the Biblical text. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mN2ZYLV6rMCal30.html
