It's easy to forget the power of a power supply in your setup. This video dives into a mistake I was making for a long time- not using an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which can absolutely be a lifesaver for you and your computer and streaming gear.
🔌 It seems my exact UPS has been discontinued, but here's the closest model I could find, which is actually a little nicer:

@Tom Buck I was shocked that you were not fully aware of what has become an ubiquitous device today... Or maybe it was just an electrifying performance... I bought my first UPS (APC) while I was stationed at Wheeler AFB, Oahu, HI and living on the North Shore a few months after Hurricane Iwa went through because the power was still so bad... Interest piece of trivia... US Navy needed to bring in a nuclear powered submarine to give the power plant on Kauai a jump start after they completed all the repairs... Shocking but true!! @Doc Rock I think you *might* be old enough to remember those events...

Great advice. I’ve been using one since about 1995. I guess I just assumed everyone was using one. I built a 12v DC version in 1975 because all my “stuff” ran on 12v DC. As I migrated to AC I added an AC UPS. I still use both but my 12v DC is charged with solar now. It’s pretty easy to build your own hybrid UPS that will run your system for a day or two if need be. Have a great day and be safe out there!

I have been putting this one off for a few years now, and it's funny how we can easily justify spending $150 for an extra SSD or another light etc. and yet not investing that money into a UPS in which can protect EVERYTHING we own 😆 ..As soon as I watched this vid, ordered right away. Thanks for making me spend that buck, Tom.

I went out and purchased 2 of them last month, which I'd been pushing off for at least 6 months. They're pricey, but worth every penny. One of mine was 1600 VA, and one of them was 650 VA. The larger one lasts me around 45 minutes with a gaming PC and a few other items connected. I haven't run a test of the smaller one just yet. Not even a week after buying it we had a short power outage while I was working on an important project, so it's definitely a life saver. As a side note to anyone that might see this, you can turn the beeping off on most devices. Which I personally wouldn't do until you know it's activated. As Tom mentioned, the beeping can let you know it's on when you're in another room.

id reccomend getting something like a jackery or westinghouse mobile power station as well as a UPS, that way, you always have the ups plugged into your setup, but when the power goes out, you unplug the ups from the wall and plug it into the power station, that way you have Much more time to save/continue working. You can get power stations that are large enough to power things like heaters and lawn mowers even.

I got into UPS's when I got my Canon Pro-1000 because if the printer loses power, it will do a huge purge/maintenance cycle and waste a ton of ink! I think I saw it said somewhere that it purges as if it had been inactive for 1,000 hours… I bought the UPS with the printer, and it has never once lost power even though we have power surges extremely frequently where I live. The power was off for a few hours last week, and the UPS was able to still keep it from losing power since the printer when idle only pulls 4W of power!
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome to hear! I used the 1000 and the 4000 at my old job and you're right- if they lose power it's a total nightmare. And usually a lot of wasted ink/paper.

WARNING!!! DO NOT EVER PLUG A LASER PRINTER INTO A UPS!!! You are likely to kill both devices very quickly if you do so. Inkjet printers are fine, but any kind of printer that fuses toner to a piece of paper is just begging for trouble.

Good information and an important piece of equipment. However... I do a live stream for our HOA every month. Use my iMac Pro and eCamm. I set up in the clubhouse. If the power goes out, that means the clubhouse power went out (which I can't control). A battery backup will keep my computer going, but with no internet, my live stream is screwed anyway!
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's tricky. Just yesterday I got a separate UPS for our network equipment to keep that up and running too, but if you're in a shared space like a clubhouse, it might be tougher. Maybe the HOA could buy a UPS for all of the public network equipment?

Hey Tom, I'm already using two power conditioners to protect my setup. One power condition has switched per outlet which is what i plug my temporary on/off equipment connected to. i.e. Lights, studio monitors, mixing console. The other is a livewire conditioner that has my PC, router, printer, monitors, and audio interface. My question is, where would a UPS battery sit in the chain? would i plug the backup battery into the wall then plug my power conditioner into that? meanwhile leaving all my other connected outlets attached to the power conditioner?
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 жыл бұрын
I think "officially" they don't recommend connecting other strips/conditioners to the UPS, but if you do, the UPS should be the first thing connected to the wall. It essentially would eliminate the need for the conditioners since it also does the same.
@gblargg
@gblargg Жыл бұрын
I'd put the conditioner before the UPS unless you have a pure sine wave UPS. Normal UPS units generate a modified square wave, something a power conditioner would probably not like at all and might get damaged trying to clean up.

I’ve been using UPS devices for about 30 years. I ran the DISA Testbed in the early 1990s and we were buying UPSes for our new network servers we were going to deploy in the basement of the Pentagon (and other sites). Also, don’t plug a surge protector into a UPS, or other surge protectors. Power strips are okay to chain, but no more than one or two in series. I recommend APC UPSes myself.

Another cool function of connecting your UPS to your Mac or PC via USB is that you can specify in the power management settings of your computer that it should shut itself down safely when the remaining power reaches 'X' amount. Great video, and it's reminded me that I really should replace my UPS that died - the only issue is getting one shipped to Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK - Amazon in particular won't send battery stuff here via air (which is a lot of stuff!). So I need to find a supplier that will ship surface mail.

Like all electronic equipment, the UPS also has a lifetime. All the manufacturers will recommend replacing them at different intervals. There was a comment already about doing a test and checking those batteries. Most of them will age and degrade by the 5 year mark if not sooner. These batteries are replaceable so you do not need to buy a new UPS each time. Excellent PSA for UPS delivered by UPS…

It's good to know they're replaceable! Thanks for the addendum to the UPS PSA!

Also keep in mind that surge protectors have a limited life span. Typically only a few years. The metal oxide varistors that do the real heavy lifting will silently age, and stop being able to clamp down on incoming surges. So, you want to replace those every couple of years or so.

Good tip! Electronics always scare me a bit. I had the power brick for a pair of speakers short out, melt and almost cause a fire a few years ago, so I'm paranoid.

Fortunately you can just get a new surge protector and put it before the UPS rather than having to replace the UPS.

Ever since getting an M1 Mac Mini I've been thinking about getting a UPS, this convinces me even more - I was wondering when this one will be posted after watching the stream!

It's definitely worth it. There have been a lot of times when recording podcast interviews where I start panicking after 40+ minutes thinking, "If the power goes out I'm going to lose everything."

A power strip (the one you cut away to and dropped) is not the same as a serge protector! (1:56)

That was just the crappiest looking one I could find for the sake of the video, not the actual surge protector I was using before.

It was really cool seeing your process for shooting the video and creating the thumbnail and seeing the finished product. I learned a lot from that. I’m considering purchasing one now so I’m not UPS all night losing sleep over the thought of a power surge.

An important part is missing: check the UPS regularly. Batteries lose capacity over time, and like a never tested backup of data a never testet backup of power isn't helping much if it fails when it is needed. Setups also change, so never rely on the runtime you once measured - with a regular runtime test with the running setup you know the runtime and can replace the battery if needed.

Definitely important to make sure things are running in tip-top shape.

I'd recommend you put a zero surge unit before this. The surge protection within a UPS is not very good long term due to their use of MOV's.
