What an absolute treat to see an MGB V8 being driven and ironically followed by a modern MX5 that was released to satisfy the gap in the market left by the MGB Roadster. Personally I like MGB seats but then you are much taller than me. Sir Michael Edwards would surely never have closed Abingdon had he not been handed British Leyland in such state of disaster. I was twelve years old at the time and I cannot forgive that decision to this day. I will always love all MGs, even Metros and Montegos but the MGB and Midget are the absolute Classics, so beautiful and just made for that aluminium V8. Sounds fantastic too

The later MGB seats are more comfortable for certain. Closing Abingdon was not great for the local economy, as it not only resulted in a lot of workers being made redundant, but also in the final closure of Abingdon Station for freight, as MG were no longer using the line to transport the cars. (Passenger trains generally ceased in 1963.) Not an easy car to drive, but the 1981 registered MGB I tried last year was fine.

It was a bit tricky to drive, sir, but it was at least good fun!

An excellent review Sir, what a glorious noise the V8 makes.

Sir, I am still alive and the MGB is undamaged, so it can't be bad, can it?

That sounds delicious sir. I've only driven the four cylinder GT and found the driving position really uncomfortable but I still love them. A great looking car and with so many parts available they make for a great starter classic.

Yes, this has the earlier seats compared with the late one you drove. Ironically, those are more comfortable! Parts availability is very good for the standard four cylinder cars, this one is all on its own!

An absolutely bonkers car, very much tailored to the owners' requirements over the course of many years!

I think that it was originally a white car, although it's been modified so much that I can't remember!

Sounds like a fun car, especially with a 4.6 litre V8. Not sure about that scoop though...

I suppose that it is one way to accommodate the clearance for the carburettor which the standard bonnet would not handle....
@James-ld2jc

@@lloydvehicleconsulting agreed. I just think it could look less aggressive, a different design of scoop would maybe look better. The BGT is, after all, a subtle design. However, it's not my car. Credit to the owner for creating such a vehicle

He has had it since 1988, and it's on its fourth engine, so he has most certainly personalised it to his own specification.

I'm surprised the gearbox can cope with the 4.6. I think the overdrive only worked on 4th in the factory cars. My 3.9 with edelbrock fits under standard bonnet.

This car has had so many modifications (perhaps even in addition to what is on the list you would have seen) that it's possible a modified gearbox is in it now. As for the bonnet and the way it fits, I think that Jim is quite fond of the rather unique look it has!

Well done, sir, for refusing to contort yourself to get in the back. It looks like it would have been injurious to you and the vehicle.

Looks like a perfectly sensible car to me. Remove the rear seat and there's loads of space. I had a Triumph GT6, I'm slightly biased in that it is a better car than the standard BGT, but the BGT is not bad at all and the V8 yes please 😂

I have yet to try a GT6, but I shall take your word for it! A standard MGB would be easier to drive, I tried a 1981 example last year.

The term 'A poor mans E-Type' was penned for the Triumph GT6 back in the day. Syd Enever, Chief Engineer at MG had long admired Aston Martins, and saw in the MGB with an addition of a fixed top, his 'Poor mans Aston Martin'. What the hell is going on with the design of the bonnet scoop in the MG you test, it's hideous! A few years back I owned a 1973 MBG GT, which started life as a 4-cylinder until 1979 when its then new (second) owner dropped in a 3.5L V8 from a Rover SD1 and its LT77 5-speed gearbox. I bought the car off him in 2006 and it was an excellent conversion, he was a gifted engineer as well as a serving RAF pilot (he flew English Electric Lightnings back in the day). The MG outperformed the factory V8s (at a fraction of the cost) and was a wolf in sheeps clothing, no V8 badges and running on its factory rostyle wheels, so it looked like a bog standard GT until you turned the key and then everyone looked up.

Well, the owner has had this over 30 years, and has personalised it to his own preference.

I believe I read an article where a couple imported an RV8 into NZ - Heritage body. Effectictively a brand new car. It was deemed unroadworthy by our äuthorities"and was banned from road registration. Looking for the link - will post it if I can find it. Bloody ridiculous that an organisation that can't even build or maintain decent roads can be so inept and unreasonable. NZ roads are jammed with crappy unsafe cars, so why this?

That's very strange indeed, isn't it? Yes, the Heritage bodyshells are very useful.
