Basically the situations circumstances create necessity for varying your notch depth. A review of "fundamentals of treework" the book, can give you perspective on what circumstances you need to pay attention to and adjust for. Standard rule of shooting for a hinge that is 80% of the diameter, IS FOR ensuring the NECESSARY amount of strength of wood fiber to make a hinge that is actually useful and doesn't break off too soon. The 'strength' of the hinge comes from the actual number of fibers in hinge relative to fall direction and weight distribution in the trunk of the tree (think the shape of slice through the trunk), and again, to to the notch fibers layout on the stump (I.e perpendicular or other to falling direction, advanced methods possible where the hinge strip is NOT perpendicular to your target on the front of the face) to the felling direction. This 80% 'rule' is not an actual rule. It is commonly held as a good 'rule of thumb' in industry practice, and may need to be varied by a seasoned veteran educated properly on the circumstances mentioned in the previous paragraph, among others. A few more are: -Tree lean/lay -surrounding environment -property damage potential/other man related hazards (i.e power lines, houses, vehicles) -type of wood (for weight and strength of fibers) -size of saw bar -integrity of the wood (rotted? Burned? Damaged?) And some others... Just trying to put a summary here cause the guys had a hard time with this clip.
