The standard technique used in Europe wants the final cut with a step. The back cut at the same level of the notch as shown in the video at 3'08" is considered dangerous for several reasons: - While the tree is moving, the hinge breaks. So, if the tree has big branches unbalancing it, a cut with no step will "drive" less the tree. You can see the hinge already broken in the video at 3'43" and the faces of the notch are still widely open. - another think considered as dangerous is that if the tree leans against another tree, it could slip back 'cause there's no step.

one sure thing with the bore cut is... if you hit a nail with a "regular" back cut... and you get your chain messed up a lot... you are in trouble... not with a bore cut tho... as the tree still is standing as long as there is the strap in the back strong enough... (I especially love the european style safety felling techniques that are getting more and more popular over here and are even part of some lumberjack championships and tournaments) nice vid and greetings from Lower Austria

appreciate the video. it would have been more helpful though, to me, with less editing. would have liked to see how you assessed the site, planned the positioning of the drop and to have heard you discuss potential hazards. also would like to see the entire cuts. nice work. thanks

Hi....the video shows a wrong and dangerous techinque. The step is absolutely necessary and the final cut must be done not staying inside the wood, but cutting from outside toward inside, for safety reasons. To be able to go away quickly

I really like you guys highlighting the safe way to drop this dangerous tree. I'd recommend NOT cutting while placing your body directly behind the tree as he is situated at 1:59 - 2:03. Using the plunge to create my hinge ensures that my hinge is complete, before the tree begins falling. The plunge brings surgical precision to tree felling.

Great video. And yes, your stump is your signature.

Looks like you cut that hinge about to nothing... certainly too thin to gain control.. But since it was a forward leaning tree, you may not have needed much control .. On the other hand its probably more a sign that you are teach ad cut your hinges on the thin side, which offers far less control...

If I came in not knowing HOW to bore cut I would be leaving without knowing. WAIT, that's me-I still don't know how to plung my saw into a tree. Alas.

0:43 oh, I see they already closed off the street for felling - no, wait a second, that white car must have squeezed through somehow ;-) edit: 2:15 man, another one got bye the barrier ... well, at least he drives careful :-) 3:26 he said: all clear, we gonna fell it! And you guessed it, another car shows up :-D

At :36 a vehicle approaches into view right at the moment the release cut is made. Let's hold off on that cut until the car clears or we observe it's travel, after all we are making a safety video. Nice demo of a bore cut with release on a leaner. Kneeling down on the fall side of a tree that is ready to go is like looking down the barrel of an unloaded gun, not a good idea, stand to the side, come on, you guys are setting an example..

Talking too quickly, not showing properly what you are talking about. You should not suppose so much. Go step by step.
