Oddly enough this is a surprisingly frequently asked question. Whenever the topic of unarmed vs. weapon defense comes up people suggest armor to compensate for the disadvantage. Would a skilled boxer (or D&D style monk, I guess) with heavy mitten gauntlets stand a chance against a swordsman?
Obviously individual skill, experience, and fitness matter the most. But let's take a look at the mechanics in this sort of uneven matchup, assuming an otherwise unarmored dueling scenario (be it historical or fantasy RPG).
More thoughts on a similar topic (the movie trope of catching a blade with bare hands):

Because people like the fantasy of going all kung fu on brigands? I mean shit, by that logic dnd would be exclusively people throwing artificer spells (which don't require you to be a mage to use them) at all opponents, not to mention the war crimes one could perform with bags of holding. Yes, yes, it's easy to pick nits at fantasy worlds but if your biggest gripe about lack of realism or pragmatism is the magical punch rogues then you are seriously missing the forest for the trees. I mean, they add their wisdom to their AC. Why? How would in reality being street smart or perceptive help hits not land on you? How does the same skill that helps you figure out if you're being lied to better help avoiding damage just as much as the skill that makes you more quick-footed and flexible? Why would wearing armor make barbarians (whose unarmored defense scales off constitution which implies they have the thick skin to shrug off blows) lose their con mod bonus to AC? And these are literally off the top of my head. And the answer is simple:the game tries to be at least somewhat balanced while selling a fantasy. And some people don't wanna sword or sorcery. Some people just wanna fist. And while discussing the real-life potential of martial arts against weapons is a fun pastime, you're just being a grand ol' stick in the mud. So to answer your question in a tl:dr fashion: because people pick monk because they think punching would be far more fun than a sword or magic. It's that simple, and realism was never a concern. Also monk weapon proficiency is just a crutch for early game. Not everyone likes dealing d4s all the time.

There was a Monk player in one of my old 3.5 campaigns who specialized in grappling. The grappling rules really aren't as bad as they've been memed to be, they just take quite a bit of getting used to. I think with gauntlets only you should go into the typical boxing block position, with both hands together. The only chance I see is to wait for you opponents attack, pari the sword with fist and arm and go into your opponents space to attack his head with your armed fist. Probably you will get some serious cuts, but you have a chance to end the fight quickly.

I always look at monks as being sort of innately magical warriors in a way, they don't sling spells but that tap into some form of inner magic (the PHB calls it Ki but it can be whatever), they can survive falling great distances, catch projectiles, run on water, jump incredibly far and high, punch ghosts etc... (that isn't even including sub-class stuff). if I play a character wearing plate armor or using a shield any time an enemy hits or misses me with an attack it will involve being blocked by the shield or glancing off the armor or finding gaps in it, a monk is more all or nothing they either miss entirely or they just get hit, I usually narrate hits as being lessened by blocking with bracers, clothing etc... So it makes sense why you can keep fighting and didn't get impaled or whatever. as for landing strikes, you're a monk, you're fast as hell and can dodge sword swings throw some neck chops, groin hits, headbutts and eye gouges in the middle of all that epic dodging. In real life you're fucked, the sword wins every time, but once you start talking fantasy like DnD there are so many things that could explain why it works, but most people just accept it because it's cool, nobody puts that much thought into how a person with a 4 foot sword killed a 500 foot long dragon it just happens because it's cool.

@@tlb963 No worries. I don't practice currently unfortunately but from my experience if you are gonna fight without a weapon then you want to be well protected, especially on the arms. Blocking with the buckler and punching with it are both viable and encouraged, gauntlet punching is last ditch effort. The way I saw it was to close the distance after an opponent swings and grab their weapon using takedown techniques. Now of course, you can get by blocking light weapons with the gauntlets but you'll find it isn't rewarding unless you're out of options. Blocking with the vambrace hurts too. I missed a parry once by moving too late and took an axe full force on my forearm. It was fine but I was reeling. Anything else specifically you curious about?

When you are talking about the DnD Monk you have to take into consideration that the DnD monk is not just relying on his pure physical body. Coming back to this I was reminded of a scene that you can stumble upon in Skyrim. If you hang around the Companion's longhouse, you can sometimes spot a conversation between a warrior that uses a pair of short weapons and another that uses a greatsword. The warrior that uses shorter weapons is bragging about the things he could do with the speed of his small weapons. To which the greatsword user says that all of that is worthless if he gets killed by a single strike from a longer weapon.

@JimRFF
@JimRFF 2 жыл бұрын
I think you run into some conceptual problems... if the vambrace is large enough to be comparable in surface area to a shield, it's going to be heavy as fuck and there would have to be designed so you could rest your arms at your side without the flared lip pressing into your hips/thighs/side (so you need to put ergonomics before protection in design), you can't easily drop them if they get stuck on something and pin you in place for a moment, you can't easily turn them edge-on to an attacker and strike... there's basically no advantage provided by "big arm/hand armor" that is *not* also provided by a shield and there are several accompanying disadvantages (shorter reach, less blocking area, less maneuverability, etc)

I love this video! Thanks, Skall! Also, great sponsor. I always interpreted that kind of character, that go urnarmed against armed opponents and manage to win, as following the specific ruleset that, in that universe, training unarmed arts made people become, on average, stronger and quicker than those that trained with weapons, following the logic that they relied more on their own bodies than the weapon-users. That mad it possible, although very hard, for unarmed fighters, especially if they used armor as you described, to beat weapon users. There can be various other reasons and they are wholly unnaplicable in real life, of course, but I like the idea as to enable more fighting styles and diversity in semi realistic/low fantasy settings.

Great video. - That was a methodical explanation on an apparently unimportant topic. People usually think gauntlets are literally full metal gloves, so, theoretically, you could "grab" your opponent's blade while closing in to attack him or her. Besides you would still have to be fast enough to predict where the strike was coming from. - 4:44 By the way, she DID anticipate where most of your attacks were coming from. - What a fantastic landscape you got in the background for a video like this.

The 16th century Irish were known (textually and it also shows up in art) for using a single gauntlet on the left arm as parrying devise. Sometimes the gauntlet is part of a full arm harness. The earliest record I could find is an English text of 1515 asking for the army of Dublin to equip a left hand gauntlet is they didn't have access to a full plate harness or choose to use a hauberk (as was custom in Ireland). Sadly I don't know if it was done before.

I actually have some first hand experience with this. Many moons ago this question was raised by a young fellow in my Kung Fu class, albeit in an unarmored version. So after the lesson Sifu obliged and we messed around with it. We found that it's possible, but heavily biased by skill. Sifu and the higher belted students could be moderately successful and the key was to dominate the weapon and weapon arm and dominate the opponent's space simultaneously. This often lead to ground fighting which also is not ideal. The weapon is a great equalizer though even in the hands of less trained users the unarmed attacker was almost garunteed to be hit somewhere. I don't think armor would have necessarily increased success for the more skilled open hand practitioners but would have limited dangerous weapon contact somewhat.

The whole proposition of armor is to DEFLECT attacks one cannot evade, or parry/block with a weapon or shield of some kind. Of course, it helps that armor that protects one's vitals be thicker. But if you're going to use it against weapons, then don't block with it! DEFLECT with it. You have to hit the incoming attack from the weak side, not meet it directly. Otherwise, though the armor may not be breached, the underlying flesh will get damaged. Even a broken bone is possible in that situation.
