Good to have you back. My suggestion is to put the video in full-frame; I don't want to watch your show in essentially a quarter of the viewing area. I also don't need to see you talk next to a still-frame of you holding aces... even if it means I don't get to see two copies of your glorious face. ;)

Great to see you back! Yes, that's so true about magicians loving toys -- I just love me some gimmicks, even the ones I won't use, because I love to see the way things work. I do try however to keep my focus on the basics of technique so that I could perform without gimmicks if called upon to do some magic. I don't want to become too reliant on gimmicks (though that doesn't stop me from buying them!). Sometimes though gimmicks can be a good way to give myself an incentive: I have a couple of gimmicks that for optimal effect require mastery of a few things I'm just not that good at yet, so having the gimmick is actually like a carrot on a stick for me to master those techniques.

I'm glad to see you've come to your senses: "I opened this up half an hour ago and I can do it already" isn't always a good thing. A little harsh, but you make some good points, but I feel like it's a problem with magic in general, not just this effect.
@magic-tv7 жыл бұрын
Tom Crosbie you are right it is a common problem that really should be addressed.

Couldn't agree more. It's easy to get carried away at things like Blackpool - and my rules for a routine are - first, I have to like it .Does it suit my style (or could I adapt it), is it practical for the conditions I work in?, reset, can it work in conjunction with with anything else I do (as in stringing effects together). For example, after Sankey's "In a flash", I use the same coin for the nest of wallets. There's absolutely no heat on the coin at point of switch. Just my two bob's worth. Incidentally, I have a ton of stuff here...95% of which I'll never use - but - buy applying my own criteria, I rarely buy anything new. Maybe about 4 effects a year..and I use them.

I liked the review. To add to your review, you mentioned Jay Sankey. For those that know or are not familiar with Sankey's Fan Mail routine, check it out on Front Row Sankey. It uses the $100 Bill Switch. It's organic, personable, makes for a conversation, and can be given away to the participant. I enjoyed when you demoed the products on the WPR. So, If you happen to come across a product that gets a higher rating, I'd like to see you demo the effect whether in studio and/ or in a live performance. Just a suggestion. Again, Craig keep 'em coming...... All the Best, ~allen

Hi Craig, agree with your general thrust that too many 'toys'/too many magic products are being produced. Most of which, as you say, end up at the bottom of the drawer, especially for 'workers' who need to have command of sleight of hand and pocket management which magic products do not give you. These toys likely end up in the bottom of the drawer for hobbyists too. I would though perhaps have used a different example than this product/Nick Einhorn because he is such a good magician and that to date, his magic is built on the craft of sleight of hand, misdirection and magic that simply packs a punch - as indeed I know you said about 'Nest of Wallets' et al. Perhaps people/company's who are churning it out like Sans Mind, Alan Rorrinson etc might have been more worthy targets to illustrate your points. Agree 100% that the TT & Jay Sankey's dvd (&/or the book you mention) are all you need! I'm going to be saddened when we move over totally to plastic money. However, as some of the commentators here have said & you've endorsed, we have fantastic tricks we can do with a TT such as Fan Mail which is why the dvd/book are so much better...

John Constantine hey bud. I agree it's a problem with many producers it just happens that Nic's trick was the first one I looked at and as the show title suggests I wanted to tell 'nothing but the truth!'
@constyconsty7 жыл бұрын
Sure thing Craig. I admire what you're setting out to do... the route to market is so much easier for magic products these days that like some relentless mince grinder in a 24 hour food factory, more and more product is just being churned out. Too many magicians are producing 'magic' simply because they can it seems to me. The easy economics and the easy targets of hobbyists and easily suckered semi-pro's and the general ease of that shortened route to market that the internet has created, makes all this happen. Anyway, I'm sure you're going to give these products and producers both barrels over the coming months for doing so! (There's sure to be some return fire, but I guess you've primed yourself up for that... you know full well how vicious and vitriolic some magicians can be. On some obscure place elsewhere I've seen a good magician - Johnathan Kamm with a perfectly justifiable position - being absolutely lambasted in ways I can only describe as unfair and vicious (& I don't even support his point of view, but it's a fair one!)

nice review good points made the problem I always have with review shows in my opinion is that they are all focused on the point of view of the worker. you talk about 30 sec reset but I do a trick by the late and great vanni bossi that has a reset of about a month and is perhaps the closest thing to real magic I do!! there are more ways to perform magic than the walkaround environment and I wish they were covered more (intimate setting, magic for other magicians, stage etc) of course it is hard to talk about the other ways if you only have experience in one field but i think that one "truth" for a table hopper is a different "truth" for a stage magician. just my thoughts
@beatz047 жыл бұрын
Agreed ! Really annoying sometimes on WPR how they always review things only from a scrolling / tablehopping / restaurant magician perspective as if that was the only type of magician out there.

Craig Petty when I saw Nick lecture he described it being useful for when you give a tip or pay for something. I'm not sure he'd do this in a set per-say. With that in mind, and even if it was a trick for a set piece, why does he need to have it examined before? "This is a till receipt, have a look at it for yourselves" They know what a till receipt is, they don't need to look at it before. Just because something IS examinable it doesn't mean it has to be. If you have something examined in every single trick you do before and after then you are losing a LOT of flow in your performance. Surely the most important thing with examining things (especially items that look familiar and everyday) is afterwards. No one needs to look at something that they're familiar with before a trick. It's when the familiar does something "unfamiliar" (a till receipt changing into a note) that they might want to examine it. Thankfully with this, they can. Regarding the reset, all the more reason why you wouldn't do this at a gig. Just because tricks have a reset, it doesn't make them bad tricks. I know you'll say "they aren't workers" and that's fine because it understandably won't fit your criteria of tricks you'd do as a working professional. It might be a better trick for a hobbyist. Believe it or not, the vast majority of people who watch your show will be hobbyists; some will never gig in their lives. I am not a professional. I am not a semi pro either. I gig from time to time but don't perform much in a paid environment. When I do, however, I do the tricks that are suited to gigs. There are some overlaps but often, they are different tricks to what I play with at home or show my friends etc.
@magicelliotth7 жыл бұрын
What's more is, Nick does the $100 bill switch. He lectures on his routine for that too! More reasons why this is situational trick.
@beatz047 жыл бұрын
I don't agree. First of all, if as you said the effect is the same to the spectator as the $100 bill switch but Insta-Change is easier then that surely is a positive thing, no ? Second, as with all tricks, it's a matter in which situation you perform it. Why should the receipt be examinable ? It's your job to find a good performance routine for it, so simply do one where the receipt doesn't have to be examined. I mean, do you only do tricks where every object is examined by the spectator beforehand ? Each and every time ?? Second, the non- existent reset problem: Trick needs a reset ? Well, only do the trick in situations where an instant reset is not required. I don't get this focus on reset anyway - not everyone is a walk around magician, in fact most magicians i know are not but either perform casually for friends or have a proper, set-up show. Reset time is really only siginificant for a very specific type of magician, the walk around guy and it's about time you maybe re-think your idea of the average magicians situation (same goes for the guys at WPR who also seem to think the only existing magicians are restaurant magicians when in my experience the opposite is the case). Third, angles - i agree angles can be a problem, but duh, angles have always been an aspect to work around since the beginning of magic tricks. Not even the cups & balls are angle free, would you dismiss the trick because of it then ? Last but not least, by your logic one could argue that a method with a TT has the disadvantage of having to get rid of the TT at some time, you could flash the TT and you cannot go on with the next trick before you don't get rid of the TT. Bollocks. As said, it's your duty as a magician to decide when & where to perform which trick and which method to use; almost all tricks have an issue or two, but that's because real magic doesn't exist. Your logic is flawed, really: On one hand you say "read a book" (i generally agree), on the other hand you complain if a trick is not instantly angle-free, instant resettable and not automatically examinable. Geez.
