The key feature that separates Mem X from Notion is the AI engine built into Mem X. I know Notion is introducing an AI engine (if I read that right), so I will have to see what happens when implemented. Mem X allows a completely different work flow from Notion in capturing ideas and the AI engine bringing past items back to the fore front.

I had the same discovery and hierarchy challenges in Evernote. So glad I switched to Mem. Great video, thanks.

I truly wish I could use Mem as my primary note-taking app. IMO they don’t know what kind of application they are (they being Mem). The iOS app is super buggy. They don’t have core formatting capabilities and most importantly they app is buggy (at this time I can’t even search for specific tags using mobile and the Mem team says there’s nothing they can do). I love the concept, believe Mem will be huge in the productivity x AI space in the coming years but personally feel that as a note-taking app it falls short.

This is really great! I was looking for a comparison of Notion and Mem by someone who extensively used both. I appreciate the coverage you gave Notion, it is the system I know - it was really interesting to see what didn't work for you and then to see how Mem loves these issues. One thought about a major factor in how we evaluate apps: I just came across the three (or four) different kinds of users again today: architect, gardener and librarian (the fourth being student). I think you might lean towards the gardener group: looking for organic relationships and a system that nurtures discoveries. The architect prefers highly structured systems, and I think I fall into the librarian category: I'm a pack rat, I want to collect and keep hold of everything! So there isn't one best app that everyone agrees is the best one, it really depends on your preferences and no app should try to be all things to all people, that would likely end in not pleasing anyone very much. I really love your video, thank you so much!

Notion has the capacity to become a huge mess when not reigned in. But the same is true for most tools of this nature.

He makes a number of good and valid points, but I would point out a few things. He praises mem's search feature and it is a good one, but he does not compare it to Notion's. He also praises mem's tagging feature and it is a good one, but he does not compare it to Notion's. Finally, he seems to concentrate mainly on notes. Notion certainly has notes but it also has a very robust spreadsheet/database feature which I don't think mem has.

Is Mem better than Obsidian ?
@yoricman
@yoricman Жыл бұрын
I had the same thought about Obsidian. Both have the "bidirectional linking" and network structure. The main difference is the interface that might be more user friendly here. For now, Obsidian is my to go App: - No login or account needed - You own your files on your machine - Files are text based (markdown) - Immensely powerful through extensions and scripting - Minimalist philosophy then add only the features you need The only thing is, you need trial and errors before to know how to organize it in an optimal way so it suit your needs (But it's mostly true for all PKM App, and that's a learning curve I'm willing to take, because the payoff are great) I'm on my way to customize Obsidian to make it my all in one productivity / creativity / information database App

After seeing his notion. I can tell that he didn't know exactly how notion work. he's that guy who jump into notion and didn't do any technical learning on how to build a system. you don't jump to notion and start taking notes. you learn every single aspect of it first and "build a system of your own" but if you lack the technical knowledge you system will look chaotic like some office table full of stuffs. I came from evernote, it took me 6months to transition and finally decided cut my evernote and use noton 100% base from this video. if you are an evernote user and hate it. you can easily transfer to mem without problem. mem is like what evernote should have been for more than 10yrs. it's just the developer and CEO of evernote are idiots. Evernote and mem are for ordinary peeps. you register and start using it. no configuration what so ever. Notion is not for ordinary people. notion is for technical people. people who have "basic programming skills." and guess what. basic education now have basic programming skills in the curriculum. so choosing which is which is simply asking yourself. do you want start right now? or do you want to build a system that will work for you? if you do go get notion. if not go get mem. don't touch evernote.. you will regret it lol

Agreed. And you're right that I don't have programming skills. And each tool serves different needs for different people.

Good points. I actually use both. Notion is my systems tool (project management, client docs, etc) and Mem is my idea generation tool. I've found that Notion isn't a good dumping ground of random ideas. Like you mention, you have to think about how each page fits into the picture. I needed somewhere that I can instantly capture and take quick action without any friction. If an note gets refined in Mem and eventually becomes a common resource, I migrate it into Notion because I've figured out how it's used and what it should connect to. Not sure what future developments might make me completely buy into one solution.

I love the idea of using Notion because there are so much structure and its beautiful unfortunately it is high maintance for an ADHDer... as an ADHDer Mem is a godsend..because to have those structure you need to have an intact organizational skills which almost all ADHD have least of... I can never sustain using keep,evernote,trello let alone Notion... maybe one can also use Mem as a training wheel for using Notion later on

Yeah kinda thought the same thing. You can do Notion good or you can do it bad. Notion has bidirectional linking. But there are some properties in mem that seem interesting.

I'm actually paying to use both Obsidian and Mem. They complement each other, especially if you sync your Obsidian to a mobile and want to keep the heavy content inside Mem's cloud space.

@@logiclightits still not very indept in notion, because you can create a system in notion that will not messed up even if there are many information in it, you can create notebooks in it in much simpler way, i think both apps are great for different uses, notion is great for creating system and project management, mem is great for capturing ideas and creating second brain
