This has nothing to do with belief, Notre Dame is a cultural icon in Paris. In front of it on The Parterre is Point Zero from which all distances in France are measured. It is in many ways the heart of France. It was built in 1163 and took roughly 200 years to complete. It is one of the oldest and most well known cathedrals in the world. It is beyond beautiful.

Reminds me of when I rebuilt a brick BBQ in my garden a couple years ago. It had a brick arch over it, so I had to build a temporary wooden frame (that looked very similar to these) in order to lay the bricks down in an accurate arch, and then removed it after the mortar had set. Looks like the same thing is happening here, and all this woodwork is just temporary until the vaults set fully.

amazing work, all that brand new timber and all that NEW technology that is being put into the ancient cathedral. It is upsetting that all that old workmanship is lost, but now the cathdral will last many many more centuries to come and it will have far less chances of further mishaps. It is seeing a new age of only the best craftsmen who work on it and restore it to its former glory.

"New " technology was used way back then. It took many decades of work to construct these buildings. Things evolved during the construction. I don't think that one single mason or carpenter particularly relished working 200 feet above the streets with no protection of any sort. Of they would have had the same tools/techniques that are available today, they would have used them. It was not done as some romantic gesture. It was dirty, dangerous and brutal. They would have loved to have had chain mortisers, chop saws, electric winches........,...

@@catabaticanabatic3800 The old technology they had back then was completely different to the new of today. What you are looking at is not what will replace the old roof structure. All this "new timber" you see is just to provide support for the reconstruction of the stone vaults. It will be taken apart and removed once the vaults are repaired. The cathedral actual timber framing is being re-done the same way it was done 800 years ago, with hand hewn timber and with the same workmanship as the original. Old workmanship is not lost at all.

Hi 👋, Amazing work, it’s a shame that a lot of skilled craftsmen and talent has disappeared over the years, and skills like this have not been passed on to another generation, as it takes many years to do an apprenticeship for this type of work, I have watched skilled craftsmen on the Internet over in Japan and China building constructions by hand. It seems like over there people are prepared to start learning skills like this at the very early age., and of course, nowadays, a lot of things are made on CNC machines, where the scale was then involved in the programming of such machines to do the job, I am now retired in my 70s living in France, are used to have my own business in the UK, Specialist Joiner cabinet maker , I look forward to seeing more of the renovation project, Phil from the moulin France.

It is necessary to know that all this bracing in the video must be removed to complete the restoration as well as the exterior bracing under the Flying buttresses. These braces are temporary to stabilize the vaulted ceiling and were needed to insure that no additional damage might occur during the cleanup above of the timber and lead pollution.

Yes, a lot of people commenting seem to think that what they see on the picture is the actual timber framing of the roof when it's just a temporary support for the reconstruction of the damaged stone vaults.
@walterulasinksi7031
@walterulasinksi7031 8 ай бұрын
@@CH-tn3fn actually, these supports were installed under the entire vaulted ceiling. Except for the transept. That was left open for the major work to be completed. The supports will need to be constructed for the transept so the vaulting ribs can be installed, as this was the area that completely destroyed when the spire collapsed. The thumbnail only shows theses temporary supports under the vaulting of the apse. Once the main vaulting arches are finished in the transept,then it will still need to have the infill blocks created. Only then can the temporary supports be carefully removed. As there is the chance that due to the weakening of the transept columns the entire thing could collapse again. As fa4 as I have seen, there has been no provision to permanently secure these columns from moving, even with the multi ton weight of the spire framework that has been installed. Most people have only recognized that they desired to have an exact replica of the original constructed and have given no consideration to what would actually be necessary to insure no further damage. This roof was never and will never be seen by any of the public, so any additions to secure the walls for the future, will never be seen, if above the ceiling.

It is estimated they need between 1000-1500 depending on their size as they need 2000 m³ of wood. They have scoured the French countryside looking for suitable trees that are as old as possible. I worked on a job in York where a 14th century beam needed replacing, they found one in a wood yard in Boston which was checked for age, shipped to York, where they removed the old one and carpenters painstakingly carved it identically to the original with adze to replicate the original cuts. This would not be possible with Notre Dame as there are few trees that old but and not many 1800's wooden beams lying around. It is better they build it with wood that is mostly the same age as it will dry and season at a similar rate.

It's nonsense to think that a 1000 yo church can be rebuilt just as the last one,,Many of the trees that went into building the original one no longer exist in the regions where the original ones were cut,,,Many of the original oak and berch trees were massive 7 or 8 hundred years old when cut,,There are non in existence that size or age anywhere in Europe now,,,,,All the woodwork was done by hand with hand some hand tools that haven't existed for centuries ,,All the metalwork was made by blacksmiths using massive open pit fires and bellows,,All hand made down to the steel nails,,Now it's made in factory's with computer controlled everything,,,The stained glass today is made in such a way ,And is so different to back then that it would be from another world to the people that created the original,,,The statues in the church are created today using air tools to save time ,Not to mention there created using CAD and lasers and digital micromitors are used to make sure everything is accurate ,,Only a small portion is made by hand using hand tools,,,The new one is still an incredible feat ,but it's nothing like the original and never will be,,It's a poor and easily made copy of a now gone masterpiece,,

After the fire I believed it should be restored to look exactly as it was when viewed from outside, but materials, instead should be modern. The 'aguille', for instance, could be entirely constructed with composite materials like carbon fibre, instead of wood and lead as the original one, but aesthetically it should be as identical to the original as possible. And the roof structure also could be made of metal, or a non flammable material, this way hundreds of old trees would have been spared.

What you are seeing in that image probably isn't what you think it is. Theses wooden arches are located under the stone arches that remained after the fire and are there to stabilise the structure. All of that is temporary support. They will be removed once the work is complete.

@jonathanlanglois2742 I don’t think that’s correct , they are rebuilding the original wooden structure.

@@Touch_Finger Take a closer look at the video. Theses arches are temporary falsework in order to stabilise the structure. The wooden roof that you are talking about is above the stone vault. Note the windows. They tell you exactly where this is in the church. This is above the choir. There are no windows in the roof itself.

hahahaha! youre so funny. while I agree it is a waste of money to build another pagan temple to the fake virgin mary sun goddess, you WILL face God VERY soon. this world is all but done and your time is almost up. so funny you people wont believe in God but you believe that the universe, earth and life just poofed into existence without any cause whatsoever except chance...big bang, abiogenesis and evolution require much more faith than I have....congrats, you certainly have more FAITH than any Christian to believe in the unproven and unprovable fairy tale called evolution.
