I mean I dance, and going ”ppappappam” or doing other sound effects strangely helps alot when learning choreographies. It helps you know at what time you do a certain movement/step/pose or how the movements are. And to people who doesn’t dance it might seem like you would get tired of hearing it, but it is really helpful and you don’t really hear it as an annoying sound, and you also get used to it. It is also very fun and kinda just comes out naturally, I do all kinds of weird sound effects when I dance. (:

I've danced for about 7 years in middle-high school. And "PAPAPAPAPAH" is the ONLY thing people did. Like what is counting?? Lol But forreal though, it actually helps a lot. Counting it out makes dancers focus on numbers and counting instead of hitting certain beats of the song. Dancing while thinking about "1-ee-and-a-2-ee-and-a-3-ee-and-a-4-ee-and-a.." is confusing when you're already trying to remember choreography on top of technique.
