@vlogbrothers you guys should co-write a book together. "It's a good earth" would be a fantastic book. You could combine the crazy sciency stuff Hank's brain has been collecting and the earnestness of heartache and joy that John writes with. Thank you John for your continued practice of sharing your anxiety, pain, hope and joy with us. This is a generous and important thing you do.

Where I live there are many large aspen groves. Because these trees are all connected through their roots (and technically one organism) their leaves change almost instantaneously across all of the trees. From within these groves, there are golden yellow leaves as far as the eye can see, all nearly the exact same shade of yellow. I love being able to witness this, thanks for reminding me to go see an aspen cluster before the leaves fall.

This is very true. And it makes me think of my neck of the woods, where we don't often get much snow to speak of, but winter does frequently bring sleet and/or freezing rain. We get these ice storms, and they can do a lot of damage to the trees, but it's most severe if they strike really early or really late in the cold season when they trees have leaves. The leaves just serve as more surface area for ice to collect on, leading to the accumulation of weight the tree limbs simply can't bear, and they break, often in very dramatic, damaging ways. Letting go of their leaves allows the trees to be lighter in those cold and icy months and survive the storms. Sometimes letting go is the best way to live on.

Life's ebb and flow, the dance between nature's resilience and human influence, is beautifully encapsulated here. We're fleeting moments in Earth's grand narrative, yet our actions echo in eternity. As a non-earth folk, by which I mean an Australian whose homeland has only one native deciduous which I've never even seen, I do indeed find it phenomenally beautiful. I sometimes get jealous of not having the kind of seasons you read about in Robert Frost, Mary Oliver, Matsuo Bashō poems. But this land of course has its own beautiful seasonal charms. I remember that in Noongar language, a traditional language of one of Australia's first nations peoples in Western Australia, the closest equivalent season for that Fall/Autumn that they have in that country is called is considered the season of 'adulthood' as it is the time to build and repair shelters to ready for winter. I just looked it up and it is called 'djeran' and is the time for flying ants and red flowers.

I've never been to Indianapolis, so certainly haven't ever been to that forest. But at the same time, watching this video I could swear I've been to those places, and seen the scenery a thousand times. I'm sure most of the "shared beauty" is because settlers from my country went to America, cut down all the native wildlife, introduced all their invasive species, and generally "ruined" the natural world. But I only exist to feel joy watching this video, or walking in a forest because of some of those very same settlers... so I'll carry on thinking that me and John walking through the same different forest, on the same different days, to feel the same different feelings of calm is beautiful.

In the park by my house there's a row of huge lovely trees that always drop a load of leaves onto the path during the first big rain of autumn, and over the course of a week or two you can clearly see the layer of leaves being crushed and merging with the soil of the path by people walking on them. I love this process and how it reminds me that I too am an organism, I too am part of an ecosystem.

When I walk through the forest I like to imagine that the trees are like Earth's mantle exploding and its interior rising upwards, tendrils stretching out into the sky. I am beneath the canopy, within their arms, and together we make this rock floating through space shockingly unique. The phrase teeming with life is often used but it's more like this place is made of life. We do not walk within a world---we are the world. It's one flowing unity. There is no separation. There is no true loss, only exchange.

This may be my favorite video of yours. I’m currently preparing to leave my home state of almost 40 years because the political and economic climate has made it unsustainable for me. Coming to terms with this move has been difficult. I love my home for many reasons. But it’s time to go. And by leaving, I will be nourished.

Beautifully thought provoking. We are indeed nourished by what we let go of. Thank you, John

Thank you for giving me the motivation to get stuff done today. It was honestly looking pretty bleak, but thinking about life this way helps.

I really enjoyed this. I'm about 1/3 of the way through my chemo right now and very much not thriving (damn you existing chronic conditions!). I'm trying to get out for a walk every day but I wake up anxious every morning. Watching this just after I woke up was very calming. 🙂

Thank you John, I’m anxious today too and I didn’t realize how helpful the trees would be

It's looks like at 0.33 you found a chicken of the woods mushroom, these are super popular to eat and have a texture just like chicken. Happy pizzamas 🎉

John, this was so meaningful to me. i recently moved away to college and am faced with the endless choices of what to continue and what to leave behind. It’s touching to imagine the things I leave behind- habits, relationships, physical objects- as contributing to nourish me. they’re all there, in my memories. thank you.
