How to Sail Oceans

How to Sail Oceans

4 ай бұрын

Two months ago I arrived in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Now in late October it is past time to depart for warmer waters, but fair weather sailing conditions are becoming increasingly elusive. Originally bound for Cape Cod, I compromise and head for Maine, a shorter run that gives me a better wind angle. The passage starts off nice enough, but just south of Cape Sable the winds pipe up and I'm getting into a nasty chop amplified by the strong tidal currents.

With each of your videos, Kevin, I am reminded of my own impatience. I watch you do what you do while thinking that I would surely slap that outboard on the back to pass into and out of harbors, at the very least. That is a choice, of course, an expedient one at that, but it brings up the spirit of the idea of the road less taken. I'm sure that I gain time on every occasion that I turn on the diesel, but I never think of what gets lost, of the opportunity cost of doing so. In the mad rush of ordinary life, time is the master we often serve, but isn't the escape from that one of the many pleasures of sailing? Why haul that urgency onto the boat with me, and make a place for it inside my own mind? Your approach inspires in me the memory of a line from A River Runs Through It, "To him, all good things -trout as well as eternal salvation- came by grace; and grace comes by art; and art does not come easy." I guess I see in your style, and am made jealous by, an attempt at art which I so easily and consistently forego. I hope this speaks to the depth of gratitude with which I enjoy your channel, so thank you. Keep it up, Kevin, and stay dry.

Wow Mike, sounds like the Maine winter is turning you into a philosopher. Great quote. Yes, we always become impatient, but then the question becomes, OK, once you reach the next destination, then what? You're not delivering cargo, so time doesn't matter, but we always act like it does.

I cruised Nova Scotia 30 years ago. Loved it. Sounds like it hasn’t changed. Your next destination should be New Foundland. When I left Nova Scotia I sailed direct to Bermuda. It was late in the season and I didn’t have time to hop down the coast.

@@howtosailoceans1423 Yeah, looks like you had a great Summer up North. All is well with me and I am sailing regularly. I am just giving my GoPro a rest as I have run dry on new things to show or say, and I don't want to go down the bikini or "drama" route. Only 60% of my subscribers watched my Iceland to Norway passage, so I guess they are getting tired of my format also. I leave again on a major (for me) adventure in April -- and may pick up the camera again then if I get inspired. Fair winds to you.

Do you get alot of wear on your pintels and gudgeons? Do you have anodes on them? How about wear at tiller- rudder connection? Have an SC 31, cutter rig with Monitor windvane. One of the best channels btw
@howtosailoceans1423
@howtosailoceans1423 4 ай бұрын
Very little wear on the gudgeons and pintles considering I've sailed the boat around 100K miles. I do have an anode by the trim tab, but there doesn't seem to be much need for it, mostly just collects marine growth.

Thanks for the great video. The line that holds (wraps?) the mainsail to the mast seems small in diameter. The video at around 5:00 gives a good view. Do you use something like Dyneema for that line or is there just not as much pull on that line as one would think?
@howtosailoceans1423
@howtosailoceans1423 3 ай бұрын
Probably the lacing on the luff. Actually dyneema would work well, come to think of it, but it's just cheap dacron three strand. No, there's not a huge amount of strain on the lacing.
@sailorjohn3819

@@howtosailoceans1423 Thanks. Dyneema would probably be more slippery than polyester double braid, but I have never tried pulling either along varnished wood.

no lobster pots in summer either. Maine is beautiful but treachorous. I think what keeps many from going up to Canada is the 12 month max or risk paying major fines or import taxes on your boat. If they stretched that to 24 months and you could get two seasons our of the journey, many would venture north.
@howtosailoceans1423

A twelve month travel visa is quite generous. The EU only gives you 3 months which is a problem for a lot of folks.
