How to Sail Oceans

How to Sail Oceans

4 ай бұрын

I hunker down from Tropical Storm Philippe in Mark's Cove, in the lovely Ship Harbor, Nova Scotia. Brilliant sunny weather soon returns, but fair winds, even in October, are hard to come by. Returning southwest along the Nova Scotia Atlantic coast one encounters persistent headwinds. The sailor has to pick his windows.

This channel is a rare treat among the many formulaic 'sailing' channels around today. It's Eric Aanderaa's tag line in practice: no bullshit - just sailing. No vain 20-30 something pointing a camera up her nose talking about feelings. No make-believe weather window we 'wait' three months for, then complain about the experience of sailing when it does come. (when our visas expire) On an honest to God blue water boat with proper lines. No engine, no push button sailing, no spastic 'made for TV' editing full of music and sound effects and wiki page narratives. Just a man and his craft, the way it should be.

I second that.. most you tube sailors will wait and wait..then complain that they have no wind.. or instead of 5 knots we got 12..poor us and give us an audience. This channel is a gem to those that watch how it's done.

I have sailed in Nova Scotia the last decade and one thing I have learned. The wind forecasts are never accurate. Not bad for direction but off many times on wind strength. Loving the videos!

Hi Kevin Mark and I get the navionics out so we can see where you have anchored. Some of your anchorages have been not to far from where we anchored! We always look forward to seeing your next video. Take care.

Hi Cindy, how do you like Navionics? I don't like the fact that you have to rent the charts, but that's happening with Open CPN now too. Plus Navionics is a one stop shop, you don't have to go to different suppliers for different chart areas.
@eleutheros
@eleutheros 4 ай бұрын
@@howtosailoceans1423 Navionics has been good, however they recently reduced the number of devices that they allow you to run it on from 5 to 2. We find that a bit restrictive, so we’ve been trying out TZ iBoat, which looks good, and with extensive chart coverage too. We’ll get a chance to put TZ to the test when we get back on the water this spring.

So wonderful to see my familiar waters in Nova Scotia being navigated by an expert like Kevin, By the way, if you're back in Ship Harbour some time and need a hidey-hole, Long Cove on Wolfe Island (on the chart you showed) is great. We were in there during some untidy weather a few years back and barely felt a thing.
@howtosailoceans1423
@howtosailoceans1423 4 ай бұрын
I take it Long Cove is on the east side of Wolfe Island. The chart only shows three feet in there, but it's not very detailed. Obviously a bit a local knowledge (you are the second person who recommended it to me).
@danleger7665
@danleger7665 4 ай бұрын
I don't have the chart in front of me but by memory there was 10ft or more. And we were well within the cove, which is on the East side of Wolfe. Maybe other Nova Scotians would have that detail to hand.

After watching your channel, Kevin, I don't think I'll be able to reach for the key on my diesel without some degree of shame. As always, it's a pleasure to see what you're up to. I'm very much looking forward to seeing how you extricated yourself from the pitiless jaws of the Atlantic Maritimes.
