Now and Then by The Beatles The Song, the Documentary & the Video! #thebeatles
Hey Everyone!
Boy do we do a deep dive on The Beatles tonight folks!
We go over The Beatles’ new single Now and Then, the documentary, the music videeo, as well as discussing whether the video improved our rankings for the song Now and Then!
We also talk about The Beatles’ mythical status, and whether that status was well placed!
And to top all of that off, we also discuss Paul McCatney’s legendary Horner Bass guitar, AND his Rickenbacker Bass guitar as well!
Which was his best bass? And why di he change back to his Hoffner violin bass? And how does all this tie in together?
Well that’s just what we’ll be discussing all of these subjects in tonight’s video!
Oh and as usual if you enjoy tonight;s video, please consider giving it a Thumbs-Up as that helps the KZfaq algorithm better identify the channel to a larger audience!
If you haven’t subscribed to the channel as of yet, just hit that subscribe to ‘The Tribe’ button, and then tap that Top-Bell Icon, and you’ll be notified of all my future videos!

Gotta love the Grinch photo insert. Ha! Good stuff. This was such a fun discussion. What a week to be a Beatles fan. Thanks to everyone on this great panel and especially Royce for hosting. I urge everybody to check out the full discussion. Lots of ground was covered. Great job recapping this, Michael (and editing around the initial technical difficulties).

Absolutely loved the song, the video, the cadence, nostalgia, emotion, effects, everything!!! Oh, and the Beatles upstage the Stones yet again in 2023. Some things never change! I don’t find anything cheesy about the portrayed antics. This was the most heartfelt tribute to their lifelong FRIENDSHIP, and the playful days of their movies A Hard Days Night and Help. Maybe you have to be 70+ to get this, I don’t know, but no way this was over the top.

No, you don’t have to be 70+. I was only about 6 when the Red and Blue albums were first released in 1973. Thanks to my mom being a fan from the beginning of Beatlemania in the US, I became a 2nd generation fan. “Love Me Do” was my first favorite Beatles song, but now I cannot pick one. I’m very happy to even be born before they broke up and to live during their lifetimes.

I’m pretty sure that Yesterday didn’t feature all the Beatles, and we don’t call that a Paul solo song. It is true Beatles song and will be rightfully added to the ‘1’ album at some point soon. I love it

On the other side, should Ringo’s solo hit “I’m the Greatest” be considered a Beatles song? It features Ringo, George, and John, and was written by John.

Great reaction, just a comment, for me it's a masterpiece, the opening of the song is brutal, with those chords in low tones, the elegance of the piano and that accompaniment of the beautiful bass line that Paul drew, and if you add it like Ringo starts to enter the song banging on the drums to enter in a masterful way with his powerful drums, It's epic. also when he makes the bridge to enter the choir is beautiful and the solo of George and Paul, together with the beautiful string arrangement, there is no way that this is not a masterpiece. And the icing on the cake, it's like a 39-year-old John with a clear voice, he ties in with the voice of an 81-year-old Paul, that's crazy. The Beatles the greatest rock band ever!!!! Thank you, John, Paul, George, Ringo, Yoko, Peter, Giles, Ben and and all the people involved in this for making it possible.

I think you’re all over analyzing the song and the video. At 73, I was there at the very beginning…saw them live on Sept. 7 1964 literally the day before I started high school. Hearing Now And Then for the first time made me tear up and think about that entire year of ‘63 waiting to actually hear a Beatles song. The first Beatles song I ever heard was Del Shannon’s Version of From Me To You in June 1963. As a Canadian I recall She Loves You hit the charts in Oct. ‘63 and then the world became technicolour. It was a very emotional time for all of us budding musicians and music lovers.I love all your commentary but really guys…It’s just an emotional, nostalgic, memorial to Yoko or May Pang, or even Paul. The video serves it well. You either like it or not and all the chatter about Peter Jackson’s shadow etc. just lessens the stunning effect of listening to the first “new” Beatles song for us seasoned Beatles fans and for many fans who were yet to be born when John passed. .

Great conversation. Your passion for the Beatles and for music more generally comes through loud and clear. I agree with everything you said. Although i cried at the end of the N&T video, I wasn't too keen on it initially. Like some others have said, the upbeat tone of the video didn't match the music. But your comments about the video make perfect sense. Thanks for your keen insight in this video and for making such wonderful content throughout your channel.

Of course John did his little part and Paul took it to the next level. That’s what you guys should be talking about forget about the timing that song was written in the 70s. -🥁😉

Did Paul McCartney save the last Beatles song? That's an affirmative! If jeff Lynne had been brought back as the producer, it would have failed. Once again, McCartney has shown us all just how special his talent is, and one again has shown us why, the combination of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr was so special. Beatles forever!!!

I've never been a fan of The Beatles but readily admit their place in the pantheon of rock 'n ' roll is deserved they simply have not touched my musical soul. I have not heard any material that i would want to re-listen to however if someone was to play the band's music in my presence there would be no objection. And then this single comes out...at the age of 64 i think this is the most beautiful melody I've ever heard. So emotive and compelling and stunning. Yes Lennon's voice is 'tweaked' and some have suggested A.I. involvement but if this is the result then kudos to those involved in the production. Seems like i will have to commence my Beatles journey at this late stage and with more 'mature ears'...better late than never i guess.

For me Now And Then has a strong similarity and same feel to Let There Be Love by Oasis and Let Me Take You Home Tonight, Diana Krall’s McCartney song cover that didn’t make on to the Kisses On The Bottom Album. Plenty of songs featured different mixes of Beatles. So Now And Then is really no different, except for it’s questionable vocal mixes of Paul & Ringo of today, with the majestic harmonies of Because. George, John & Ringo were the only participants of Revolution 9, Paul, George & Ringo only with Here Comes The Sun, Back In The USSR - with Paul, George and John. She Said She Said- John, George & Ringo, Yesterday with Paul, Julia - with just John to name but a few. Years ahead Now And Then will no doubt be an established part of The Beatles catalogue, despite its flaws, it is a good song so this analysis from all of us today although defiantly important now won’t make a big difference to a new fan who turns on to The Beatles for the first time in 10 years time say, listening to the catalogue over time in any form or direction.

One man's opinion: it was a good song, and the video was very touching. Is it an "A" song, like Hey Jude, or Strawberry Fields, or Let It Be? No. It's a solid B song from me. Take away all the background "stuff" and it's a solid minor track on any Beatles album....a song you grow to love but not an iconic masterpiece. I like it. It's a nice piece, and a great gift after all this time. Best wishes, Ernie.

Michael, why are people fussing over the nostalgic excess in "Now and Then". It was meant to give a magical feel as opposed to the Rolling Stone's use of nostalgia in Angry video. Both were a "blast to the past". It is a marketing strategy by these Legacy Bands. Remember, it connects generations. Gen Zers (and to a certain extent Millenials) have no idea what it felt like to have lived the Stones and Beatles at the apex. Who they were, their dynamics as a group, their Pop Culture iconagraphy, etc. Was the song apt for it? Considering that most likely there will never be an opportunity do do it again, it was an opportunity to not be wasted and Paul and Ringo made the right call. Glad GenZ and Milenials could see who these guys were and all about and interacted. No manipulation by Jackson. It was a Farewell song if you come to think about it. No cringe at all like your guest erroneously asserted.

I'll tell what they should have done. The way the song was done is great for the A side. For the B side they shoulda done it with just George's rhythm guitar, a new Paul guitar and bass a livelier Ringo drum. A side modern, B side Cavern Club Beatles. That would have been fun. I think I'll make my own rock ballad version.

I'm not putting down anyone who likes this song, I'm just surprised. I didn't think there was much here. I thought the other two THREE-tles songs (as some call them) were better. However, I would say that a direct comparison from what they did here to the original demo tape makes their work sound more impressive. I liked the quality of John's voice on this song especially when compared with the other two. I think they should use the same technology to clean up John's voice on those songs. I think my biggest problem with the song is that Paul waited TOO LONG to complete it, and someone beat him to the finish. The fan production of this song is absolutely STELLAR! In my opinion, it's better than what was done by Paul and Ringo. After I heard that version, I wondered what Paul could do to this song which was any better. Sorry, but after hearing it, I was disappointed. It's okay but not remarkable. Another thing.....I don't know why Paul and Ringo would say this is the "last Beatles song" when there are other songs out there they could finish. There's a song they were performing in the studio back in the days of the "Get Back" sessions called "Watching Rainbows" which was much better. If they would have released that song as "the last Beatles song", I think people would have been awed. It's pretty good, and there's a version of it done with AI that's as good if not BETTER than any "real" Beatles song. People should check them out.

This song sets such a strong mood. From the very first chords. Is it a top 10 Beatles song? No, but it grabbed my attention and my emotions and did not let go for 4 minutes straight. It also treads new ground for the band by being sooo heavy on minor chords. Not typical of them. It's not perfect, but I think it's more evocative and stronger than several Beatles songs from the 60s. I like it better than Lovely Rita, Piggies, Sexy Sadie, Bungalow Bill, Wait, Blue Jay Way, Maxwell's Silver Hammer, etc. And I'm so glad we have it.

The group The Beatles split up in 1970 and died with the tragic death of John in 1980. This is not a Beatles record. It couldn't be. For McCartney to call it that is a travesty. There was no group interaction, no individual veto (!) and it's a mishmash of loose bits played at many different times on different projects. I hope this really is the final one of these Frankenstein tracks and to Paul I'd like to say: give it a rest now, mate. You've taken this as far as you could and further than you should have. And by the way: John would have vetoed this record and George actually did in 1995, as McCartney admits with a smile. He still created this 'Beatles track' anyway, in spite of that veto, so Paul himself proves it: The Beatles are well and truly....quite dead.

It's not a Beatles track. Everyone is hypnotized. It's a manufactured money grab. Just another example of the general acceptance of mediocrity. John's dead. George is dead. George hated the song and no matter how much McCartney spins it, George hated it. AI doesn't make it a Beatles track. AI sucks as much as lip synching and backing tracks at concerts. Everyone has been duped and it's just sad to see how many people have fallen for it. Rock and roll is dead.
