I completely agree with your analysis. At the end of May I purchased a 3 year old Tesla Model 3 Performance for roughly 60% of its original purchase price and it drives and looks like new with no battery degradation that I can find. However, more remarkable, is that I've just sold back to BMW the BMW I've owned for the past 40 months, for £1450 less than I paid for it. Now that's what I call low depreciation! In my case, the "cost to change" to EV seems to have worked in my favour.

@@williamarmstrong7199 yeah that basically proves my point. You say no degridation visable but there will be some so say 100,000miles for 5% lose so if the dehraded linearly then 300,000miles would be 15% instead you are saying nearly 50% which means they are basically useless. If my 27 year old 4x4 lost half of it's range it would be scrap but 350,000km and it will likely do that much again without issue

Surprised no mention of the Hyundai Ioniq 38kWh. In Feb I got the top spec Premium SE, 20 plate, 39K miles. Gets 5-5.5mi/kWh, easily over 200 miles of range in the warmer weather..... all for £18k. Good size car, well equipped plus 5 year transferable warranty. Also for similar money you can get the MG5 too, yes it lacks an app for remote control/preconditioning and the infotainment is terrible, but it does have an 8 year warranty. If you stretch for the larger battery then you'll easily get over 200 miles range

An excellent run-down. You stuck to the facts, so the negatives and positives are there to be considered by individuals. Waiting to see the MG appear (no I don’t have one). Oops! You just did it. I am simply going to flag up insurance, because that gave me a shock, as a 60-year-old man with touch-wood, decent NCD. I checked on a Tesla Model 3 and it was a grand. The most I paid to then, including a large Volvo 5-pot estate auto, was £350 for a year. Putting that in perspective, road tax was about the same! I finally decided to focus laser-like on reliability, and by that I mean ‘lacking FRAGILITY’ and on costs like fuel etc, ended up with a Prius gen 3 and I specifically aimed at that age of hybrid where in the UK road tax was made zero, and ULEZ and the other zone, are complied with. Throw in insurance being more ‘normal’, and generating heat in winter being a huge plus/necessity (hillwalking), and it’s all rather logical,and obvious the choice for me. I don’t tow anything, this being a downside for some, and I do miss roof rails although less neat alternatives are available, and you can fit a towbar of sorts if it is just for light stuff eg mountain bikes as opposed to a caravan. I now understand the automatic transmission is basically a differential and only has one friction plate, even that is a safety for over-torque situations. ie not a friction plate normally in use, not a clutch. With this patented design Toyota bought from researchers making it first in Berkeley for General Motors who then made the mistake of selling it (!), Toyota have the most reliable transmission bar a single-speed constant-mesh system like Tesla which is a simple reduction gear. Put another way: when did you last break your differential? An ordinary one, a free-running one - never, probably, and that’s what the Prius/Toyota hybrid auto-trans is, just quite difficult to recognise (note though, it has three inputs/outputs, that’s your clue). Each to their own, decide what you need, research research research, then laser-in on the one you want and watch for duds and ‘bargains’. Take care all.

Car dealer magazine are reporting a further drop before levelling off . Still some hesitancy as dealers say EV's used take much longer to turnover. Catch 22 . Sitting on stock longer waiting for demand and thus profit or drop the price and negate the profit but create space for the next one.

I bought a Hyundai Kona 71 reg Premium facelift model 17 months old 2 months ago. It was from my local Hyundai dealer and cost just under £23,000. I love the car, the quality and the drivability. Many of the reviews criticised the front wheel spinning when pulling away. I use mine in eco mode which gives a lovely smooth take off, and I am averaging 4.7 miles/kwh. I have the OVO overnight rate for cheaper charging at home which costs 10p per kWh. So the approximate cost of 10 to 80% (roughly 50 kWh) is £5. Not bad for over 200 miles range. I know I won't get the same economy on motorway runs or in the winter, but it will still be an economical car to run. What's not to like!

Today it's pretty much where you'd expect it to be and matches the lease calculations. Your video made us pull the trigger on our first electric vehicle! Maybe you should make a video regarding the mileage of an used ev and battery performance. Higher Miles = lower range ?!?!? What are the advantages and disadvantages of purchasing or leasing a second hand EV with a lot of miles on the clock. Then we were told to charge the battery up to 80% if we use it on shorter distance and only charge it up to 100% when we plan to make a longer trip. Is this common knowledge? Is this valid for all EVs or is it something that Audi does? Does rapid charging affect the life and range of the battery? Same question for trickle charging. So many questions that new EV owners have and we can't easily find an answer. BTW massive fan of your channel. Very informative compared to others. Following your recommendation from another video we went for a Ohme pro charger as we are already on a Octopus energy contract.

Are miles travelled any relevance for electric cars, for ICE engines normally associated to engine wear and servicing, is that relevant for installed electric motors on EVs? 2. Perhaps with more older EVs becoming available second hand, instead of asking for money off, should we be asking for a new battery pack or something else to upgrade to the electronics pack on board if available?

A great round up and as I have a year left on my lease, the options for replacing it are getting really good and as the warranty periods for some of these are long it takes the risk of any issues away. It will be a cheaper way to drive electric again, enjoying the cheap running costs. 200 miles for £3.70 is something I will not stop enjoying!

@@Jaw0lf Well if you average 4 miles per kWh , you must be driving a Tesla , as all the other Ev at 70 only give a max 3s maybe 3.5 if your lucky on motorway at 70 mph. Plus you forgot to add in the cost of the loss as us Ev owners all know you lose anything from 5% to 15% during the charging at home & the car converting it from AC TO DC. You also failed to mention because of that cheap night rate you pay more for the other house electric you use for the other 20 hours left in that day. O and if you only have a 7kw charger to put the 50 kWh you need to do the 200 miles would take a few days using your cheap night rate. Plus on your return it would take another 2 to 5 days to fully charge again if you use it everyday. I love the way people dont give the proper costs of journeys in an Ev. Is night charging making everyday journeys cheaper than an ice car yes but come on give proper figures.
@Jaw0lf
@Jaw0lf 11 ай бұрын
@@PeterReynolds-mv8ki Thank you and fair point, I had not included the conversion loss, and obviously that will increase the cost . But still it is cheap. I do not spend every day going at 70MPH and using the battery up on long trips. My point is that I use a mix of roads and speeds with very little at 30Mph or less as was said in the previous response. So for clarity, the whole of 2022 so the coldest days giving 220 miles from a full charge compared to 270 in Summer. I completed 9075 miles and used 2692.83kWh. Most of the re charging was done at home, with only a handful of charging from DC chargers. As I previously said, I can achieve 4kWh in Summer, so I was being truthful. The above figures are there for you, so use your own figures and you can decided if this works for you. Due to decisions made over many previous years, I have 7.56kWh solar panels on an E/W facing roof and a storage battery. This has left my total bills at £120 per month for home use, cooking, heating and the above mileage in my EV. My Zappi car charger gives amount of energy used in the charge and those are the figures I have provided. I tell people about how good the move to an electric home and car is, as I have done it and it saves me a lot of money. It isolated me from the huge increases over the past year, so it has been great. EV's are not for everyone...yet. We need charging for those that do not have off street parking, new ideas for those with caravans. This is advice and you now have the informations you wished. This may put my annual equivalent rate at 3.37 miles per kWh from the grid, but the other Figures from the car are the same as used by petrol or diesel cars as the MPG achieved.

Yes our Ioniq 38kWh is great and fortunately we have no desire to change it. Purchased last year after our ice car was written off it's lost up to ten grand. We thought we'd had a very unusual slice of good luck being able to go electric a year sooner than we thought, of course now the other shoe has dropped and we would have spent less had we been able to wait. Even with that caveat we are soooo glad we bought the Ioniq as the cheapest available ev at the time. I'd fancied an MG ZS Trophy for the boot space and was disappointed not to be able to afford one, I've since heard of loads of problems with it. There's no heated steering wheel and it's only got three regen modes which you have to select from a button on the middle console. The flappy paddles on the Ioniq are great fun to use and it's fascinated me the number of ways there are to optimise consumption. Even though the weather hasn't warmed up yet on the north coast here in the southeast of England we're seeing 6 miles per kWh regularly already. The car is only the Premium version so no cooling in leather seats, not keen on leather seats anyway, but they are heated and so is the steering wheel and that's been bliss in the winter. The app lets you preheat and precool the interior, it's a really great car, plenty of bells and whistles, those are just ones I can use! 😂👍 Oh...and the boot is much bigger than you think, holds my walker easily plus a week's shop.

It’s quite interesting that you’ve done a video on this, I’ve been looking at affordable replacements for our Ioniq 38kWh, not because it’s old or giving any issues (we’ve had it for nearly 2years), but because I’d like something with a little more range and possibly boot space (along with more performance & style if poss). I was initially surprised at the number of SE spec’d iPaces available for less than £30k, but seeing E-Trons that low blew my mind 🤯 until that is, I checked the quoted range…. 196 miles!! From a 71 kWh battery!! That’s no better than my Ioniq! So in summary; I like the idea of an iPace having had the use of one for 6 weeks, but Jaguar reliability is a worry. A model 3 is also tempting given the access to the supercharger network. But I think I’ll wait for models like the EV6 and Polestar 2 LR to drop to similar levels. Thanks for another informative video 👍🏾

Our car market is far away from that state you have in the UK because here far less EV sold than there. Even there probably not so easy to get a real bargain. That is hard to guess what will be the market price for a used EV with more older, more used battery pack when you want to sell after 3 years later or so. That is true if you want to buy an EV is best to buy a used one which is a real bargain, than risking too much money. The value loss drop is still in place, so best to avoid the new cars. I hope soon there will be a battery cell type change because the current one is not really safe. I am not planning to buy an EV in the next 5 years but I definitely wait the ones with LiFePo or solid state cells. Maybe the LiFePo cells will reignite the EV market because they are not just much safer but they are far durable than the current ones. Some manufacturers are already started to switch on it.

I have a Kia and in last 3 years has spent 14 months off road awaiting parts which always go on back order. Ask your local Kia dealer and I they will tell you how bad it is.
