+NoWaterRiver Hi thanks for the video I'm doing a poem on Mandalay by ruphard kipling my performance is on April 18th and 20th, I have memorized and i have couple of gestures and pauses, can you please check if i have about the right idea (Medium Paced volume throughout the poem with medium pace unless it’s a particular part(mentioned below)By the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' eastward to the sea,-breath and 2 second pause after each comma where indicated a pause. There's a Burma girl a-settin', and I know she thinks o' me; For the wind is in the palm-trees, and the temple-bells they say: "Come you back, you British soldier; come you back to Mandalay!"-long pause, big gesture of wide arms on air to exggrate. Come you back to Mandalay, Where the old Flotilla lay: Can't you 'ear their paddles chunkin' from Rangoon to Mandalay?-long pause On the road to Mandalay, Where the flyin'-fishes play, An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!-long pause 'Er petticoat was yaller an' 'er little cap was green,-pause(this part of the stanza has a slower pace) An' 'er name was Supi-yaw-lat -- jes' the same as Theebaw's Queen,-pause An' I seed her first a-smokin' of a whackin' white cheroot,- long pause to bring effect. An' a-wastin' Christian kisses on an 'eathen idol's foot:-pause Bloomin' idol made o'mud -- Wot they called the Great Gawd Budd -- Plucky lot she cared for idols when I kissed 'er where she stud!-long pause On the road to Mandalay . . . (medium paced again) When the mist was on the rice-fields an' the sun was droppin' slow,-pause She'd git 'er little banjo an' she'd sing "Kulla-lo-lo!"-pause With 'er arm upon my shoulder an' 'er cheek agin' my cheek We useter watch the steamers an' the hathis pilin' teak.-Long Pause Elephints a-pilin' teak-do big wide arm gestures, to represent elephants. In the sludgy, squdgy creek. Where the silence 'ung that 'eavy you was 'arf afraid to speak!-long pause On the road to Mandalay . . . (this stanza has a slower pace and gets slower as it goes on and on) But that's all shove be'ind me -- long ago an' fur away, An' there ain't no 'busses runnin' from the Bank to Mandalay;-pause An' I'm learnin' 'ere in London what the ten-year soldier tells: "If you've 'eard the East a-callin', you won't never 'eed naught else.”-long pause do a drinking beer gesture, as he is desperate for remembering Mandalay No! you won't 'eed nothin' else But them spicy garlic smells, An' the sunshine an' the palm-trees an'(pause for effect) the tinkly temple-bells; On the road to Mandalay . . . (fast pace to emphasise his anger on where he is currently living compared to Mandalay) I am sick o' wastin' leather on these gritty pavin'-stones, -pause An' the blasted Henglish drizzle wakes the fever in my bones;-pause Tho' I walks with fifty 'ousemaids outer Chelsea to the Strand, An' they talks a lot o' lovin', but wot do they understa Beefy face an' grubby 'and -- Law! wot do they understand?-Pause I've a neater, sweeter maiden in a cleaner, greener land!-Do a sad type of facial expression(trying to cry)(the pace slows down a bit) On the road to Mandalay . . . Ship me somewheres east of Suez, where the best is like the worst, Where there aren't no Ten Commandments an' a man can raise a thirst; For the temple-bells are callin', an' it's there that I would be - (fast paced) By the old Moulmein Pagoda, looking lazy at the sea;-long pause after the long speech in this particular stanza On the road to Mandalay, Where the old Flotilla lay, With our sick beneath the awnings when we went to Mandalay!-long pause On the road to Mandalay, Where the flyin'-fishes play, An' the dawn comes up like thunder outer China 'crost the Bay!

+Nikunj Majithia It looks like you're on the right track with your poem! Just be sure your "long pauses" aren't TOO long and your slower pace isn't TOO slow. When it comes to pacing, you really need to put yourself into the character and speak as he would naturally (for example, you have a good idea to speed up in the stanza in which he's angry), but think also about modulating the volume of your voice -- when to raise it, when to whisper, and so on. You'll be great! Let me know how it goes! :)

You see, I love making poems, but often times I get lack of vocabularies and some excitement and suprises to it. Once, a classmate of mine commented on the post I've shared regarding about writers and poetries. He just said if our school would have a contest in Poems and other writings, he'll be gladly to see my work. It got me startled because, I just made this as my hobby and passion but I dont know. Im messed up. I think I cant sleep tonight thinking about that. Im just not used to participating on events.

I wrote lots of poems like this when I was in school. The important thing is to be honest when you recite them. Don't try to "act" like anything or anyone -- just be yourself and keep it really simple. Let the words speak for themselves. Perhaps you are speaking more of your comfort or confidence level with public speaking? If so, see if your teacher will let you use a podium so you have a place to rest your hands and you will feel "protected" with the podium in front of you. But then you'll need to get away from that eventually ... in which case, give your hands something simple to do, like the hold the paper with your poem written on it.

@William Kloezeman Oh, what a great project! When I taught 9th and 10th grades, I would hold a Poetry Café in class once a month. I'd arrange the chairs in a circle around the room (though the kids usually sat on the floor), dim the lights, and light candles (probably can't do that anymore!). Then the kids would go to the "stage" one at a time and read or recite a poem of their choice, either their own or by someone else. Reluctant kids were often excited that I considered lyrics as poetry and allowed them to recite those as well (keeping it clean). It was during one of these Poetry Cafés that a shy 9th grader who confided to me that he didn't feel he belonged in the school recited from memory Dickinson's "I'm Nobody---who are you?" and was thrilled to receive an enthusiastic round of applause. It remains a highlight of my short teaching career.

Good points. I think that scoring the poem is a good idea but I do not think one must not feel they stick to their first impressions, rigidly. I find my delivery changes the more I work on a poem. I see and feel things that I did not catch at first glance. My pacing and emphasis often changes as my insight into the words grows.

Absolutely -- I agree with you 100%. The scoring provides a preliminary road map to help you navigate the poem ... and then you need to make it natural, all your own, adding your own emotional response to it. Great comment -- thank you!
