Maybe had a little too much fun with this...
First, what a magical song. This was my favorite Beatles song in my childhood - there's something powerful and subtle in John's lyrics that every lonely little kid can identify with. "You don't know what you're missing." "The world is at your command." I always thought of this as a hopeful song. All you need to do to thrive is get out of your own way.
Also, this might be the greatest lyric ever composed:
"Nowhere man, don't worry
Take your time, don't hurry
Leave it all
'Til somebody else lends you a hand."
Musically, this is a beautifully simple song. Quite honestly, this is the easiest track I've done since the "Please Please Me" album. The MAJOR caveat, of course, is Paul's ridiculous bassline. His playing is remarkable. For the first time, I literally tabbed out his playing note for note (you can see me reading my own chart in the performance). His genius is obnoxious sometimes.
Finally, a grown-ass man should not play with action figures - or have nearly as much fun doing it.
Trivia:
- Recorded on Friday, October 22, 1965 in 3 takes (after an aborted attempt the day before).
- I've always had a soft spot for the Randy Travis version from the 1990s-era Lennon tribute show. Really captures the mournful spirit behind the lyrics. • Randy Travis - Nowhere... .
- "1964 The Tribute" has a PERFECT rendition on their "All You Need is Live" CD, which unfortunately isn't on KZfaq. Here's another performance, also quite good (just with a VERY dry mix) - • Nowhere Man .
- I bought "Yellow Submarine" on BluRay and rewatched it while putting this video together. My god, it holds up. Do yourself a favor and watch it on a proper 4K HDTV. Beautiful movie.
Enjoy! Let me know what you think!

Man...this brings me back to fourth grade. Time for another one of Jacob's life stories!: When I was in fourth grade, my grades were slipping badly, and my fourth grade instructor called a parent-teacher conference with my father, essentially telling him I needed to grow up and was headed down a dark path. After two months of getting tough love from my father, and my mother going into a deep depression, one day, I took time to listen to this song, despite my mother actually giving me the Red and Blue Albums for my tenth birthday a short while before all this went down and me having seen "Yellow Submarine" a few times in those two months, this song finally clicked for me, and I decided to really put my nose to the grindstone when it came to my school studies because everyone thought I was a Nowhere Man headed down the road I was taking. That May, on the last day of school, I was given the "Most Improved" award in my class. My parents were overjoyed, and seeing them overjoyed made me overjoyed, too. Of all the memories from my public school daze, those two months of reforming myself are definitely one of the highlights. This cover brings me back 21 years (the date is almost close, too)...in a positive way. I really needed this. Others were when I was in sixth grade, as equipment manager of the football team, I got the entire team (coaches, too) to all sing "She Loves You" on the bus ride home from the final game, where we were undefeated and unscored upon. Another includes a bus ride in eighth grade to the high school where we'd all end up going a few months later, and I got the whole bus to sing "Yellow Submarine". This cover was amazing. Everything was perfect. The action figures were amazing! Well shot, might I add. I'm 31, but I still have a soft spot for my childhood hero, Thomas the Tank Engine (with voice talent like Ringo, George Carlin, Alec Baldwin and Pierce Brosnan!), and have collections of wooden trains, HO scale models, books and DVDs.

I saw the Fabs perform "Nowhere Man" live in 1966 at Philly's JFK stadium. The harmonies were spot on which is incredible considering they could not hear themselves with no foldback monitors. We were only 65 feet away and could hear them clear as a bell. They also did an incredible "Day Tripper", "Paperback Writer" and others like "If I Needed Someone" and "I Feel Fine". Imagine hearing those two guitars and bass blast you from their Super Beatle Vox amps. I recall Harrison's guitar being crystal clear and loud, Lennon's Epiphone was also clean and full and McCartney's bass was thundering. Great concert! I couldn't hear Ring's drumming very well but over all, there were times where I closed my eyes as if I was listening to our hi fi system playing the Beatles and level 10😃

@@MichaelSokil It was a surreal experience for me, only being 13 at the time, & a budding guitar player who was already a huge Beatles fan to see the most famous band on earth walk on that stage and then stand there with their backs turned while tuning their guitars & adjust their amps just like any local garage band...I enjoyed that. They also did "Baby's in Black" with John & Paul over on John's mic, "Yesterday", "I Wanna Be Your Man" & they opened with "Rock & Roll Music" with John's voice piercing the air while he was the only Fab wearing sunglasses. They closed with Paul screaming "Long Tall Sally" just before we got hit with a rain storm. The concert was great but, gun-to-head, I'd say "Nowhere Man", "Day Tripper" & "Paperback Writer" (which was their latest single at the time), were the most, viscerally powerful performances, & everything you could have hoped for in terms of hearing them live😄

Couldn't agree more -- this is a magical song! It stopped me the first time I heard it, and it touches me every time I hear it. John would be remembered forever even if this was his only song. In college, I saw concert video on hallucinogens of the Beatles doing this song, fixated on the way John inflected those three ascending notes/syllables -- "no - where - man" -- like a flower opening or a bird spreading its wings. To be honest, beautifully done as the outdoor scenes were, I prefer watching your playing -- it keeps me connected to the great art of these songs.

First, fantastic job. You bring these old favorites to life once again. Thanks for the memories. I have long noticed that Paul often did his most awesome bass work on what were the simpler songs, especially those he did not write. If listening to vinyl, it was easy to overlook the bass on this song, which was a big mistake to make. The bass carries it. And you played it perfectly.

I love that Gibson J160e you have and the Fender in blue, is that electro- blue or something like that? George Harrisons first and only Fender used in the early Beatle years, Historically (correct me if I'am wrong) George only used that Fender on only one Beatle recording, cant recall the tune?. You play awesome, by chance do you cover any Badfinger tunes???, Pete Ham was an awesome guitarist, George Harrison thought very highly of Pete, George gifted Pete his 64' Gibson SG standard which can be seen in the Beatles "Paperback Writer" official video also briefly seen played on the "Rain" video, the Gibson was Pete's "Go to" guitar and played the snot out of it. Prior to Petes death, with already deciding his fate, Pete gave the Gibson to his older brother John for safe keeping, John had no Idea what Pete was doing at the time and didn't question him. The Gibson's whereabouts was unknown for decades after Petes death, it resurfaced several years ago through an auction house where a guitar collector fron New York purchased the Gibson SG for a little over a half million bucks. George was a super cool dude behind the scenes according to all that knew him, kinda figured that, George was known for gifting guitars to fellow musicians. I wonder if George kept his Gibson J160e???, I know his Son Dahni plays Georges guitar collection alot. Thanks for sharing your guitar skills with us.✌

Just to add also, their live performance at Krone Circus in 1966, while being limited due to primitive technology at the time, was still superb! All these years, hearing those backing vocals done on stage is heaven-sent. Great work on this! Michael, I love your work - it is amazing to hear "exactly" what and how they played their songs. I would have rather focused on your fingers than the stand-up figures - as always, thank you!

you’ll get a second version of just the playing relatively soon, not to worry!

Wow, nice double track on those Stratocasters, that was beautiful! But for true authenticity I should have heard a very short errant string squeak just before the end of the first bar of the solo. Michael I know you'll do better next time, almost perfect.

In the 60's this one was my last Beatles song. I didn't take any notice of anything they did afterwards and became interested in Project Apollo instead. A year or two later I turned down the opportunity to take up an instrument. For 30 years. It wasn't until the 70's when I heard Slade that I tracked back and found I'd missed Get Back and Creedance Clearwater Revival. Decades later I still can't stand any of those hippy groups like Genisis, Pink Floyd or Yes and I'd lump almost all of the later Beatles stuff in the same catagory. Nowhere Man remains one of my favourite songs to murder on guitar and I liked you action figures even though I thought I wouldn't.
