(at 4:26 so idk if this gets brought up) Matter, at a subatomic level, can be destroyed (and theoretically created). Energy can't be created or destroyed, but matter can. Not saying this breaks anything, since consciousness is a fundamentally unsolved phenomena, but it's worth noting.
@Frikiman_H
@Frikiman_H 3 ай бұрын
The thing about behaviors is that they don't necessarily need a conscious actor. The cordyceps that drives the ant to the top of the grass is the one that's the most successful in dispersing its spores, and therefore, the one whose genes will be spread out the most. Over the course of generations, this behavior will be gradually perfected since it's the one that yields the best results. So, you don't necessarily need a conscious fungus, just a lot of time and natural selection. Not to say that consciousness isn't a widespread phenomenon (I do find panpsychism to be an interesting way to tackle the consciousness problem), but this example in particular is definitely not a smoking gun.

I do have one nitpick about 8:30 - common misconception about the observer effect is that the act of observation is the somehow "magically" doing this. In reality, it's much more mundane. Basically, what really is happening is that the instruments we use to observe these quantum particles and shit themselves alter the system, because these are such tiny, volatile things that even something like a microscope is like using boxing gloves to sort grains of rice. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observer_effect_(physics)

Only halfway through the video, maybe they circle back to the comparison between life and the law of conservation of mass/energy. The words “life” and “consciousness” refer to a system of interactions. Same thing with water boiling, for example. If that state ends, it doesn’t go anywhere, or disperse. The water was boiling, now it isn’t. The human was alive, now it isn’t. Life requires energy and matter, but it isn’t energy, or matter. Again, I’m only halfway through, they very well may circle back to this topic. But I’m bored at work and can’t finish the episode right now. I am open to other peoples opinions on this topic, let me know what you guys think 🥰🤩🥳
@Aleks251
@Aleks251 3 ай бұрын
yes but the boiled water Evaporates and disperses Even if you stopped boiling it, there is a little less water in there than before. When a person dies and is brought back (its possible in certain situations with shit like AED and what not) a little bit of them is gone as well I've spoken with people who have been brought back (only two to be fair) and both have told me they haven't been perfect since they've come back.
@Sniblet
@Sniblet 3 ай бұрын
This is what I was going to say! Aleks's theories all depend on life being energy. While life coincides with the flow of energy in the body, it isn't that energy. It's the flow. Life is an event, or a condition. Unlike matter and energy, events can be created and destroyed. Fire stops burning. Water stops boiling. Wind stops blowing. You stop playing video games (hypothetically) or turn a light off. The burning, boiling, blowing, gaming or glowing don't go anywhere - they're just over. The energy that made them happen goes somewhere else and finds something else to do. People who've died and been brought back have never undergone anything inexplicable. The kind of "death" that can be reverted by an AED isn't death by any definition - it's fibrillation. It's your heart acting funny. You don't cease to be when your heart acts up. You'll probably go unconscious and suffer some brain damage from lack of blood circulation, which would - together with the conscious understanding that you nearly died - account for being different when you wake up. Death is when your brain activity ceases. No one has ever come back from that, and of course they wouldn't. The flow that makes up "you" has ended.
@Maxdamageplus
@Maxdamageplus 3 ай бұрын
@@Aleks251 Yeah, the evaporated water goes away. But in this comparison, the idea of life is being compared to the idea of boiling. It’s a state. When the boiling ends, the boiling doesn’t go anywhere. The water is just no longer boiling.

The life stream in FF7 is the Gaia theory. You return to the life stream which is bound to the planet. The planet is also just straight up called Gaia. Must be nice having such a definitive answer to existentialism. DBZ the concept of sacrifice isn't so hefty because we know about the afterlife. Though it makes Buu even more scary in universe that he can just waltz up to heaven and attempt to murder people.

I always hold a theory that dreams are basically your brains replaying the very, very, *VERY* small fragments of your previous life (or the "energy" of your previous life, as Alex put it) that somehow get left in the atoms in your brain. Genuinely think about that. *What the fuck else would dreams be?* Why don't dreams replay YOUR memeries? It's always wack crap that has no basis on what's happening in your life.

I dunno, bro, I think consciousness is just, like.. Computer data. The stuff that it's "made" from is still there, but the data itself is just gone, turned off. The data our mind is made of is non-physical, just interactions between physical things, and when that interaction stops being made the data just doesn't be good no more.

Nah man. Life is a continuous line, it started with a big bang and one day it will go back into itself and repeat in a never ending cycle, what we believe to be alternate timelines/dimensions are just different points in this line. We are confined by the cycles of life and death, both physical and celestial, and as humans, we can do nothing but rebel against the natural order. In simple terms: "life is a fuck"

Well this is gonna be downer. I'll just throw out there that my theory is a sort of reincarnation, but it's completely untraceable by any conceivable means. My basis in this is the principle that matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed (hell, Aleks brought this up pretty early but I started this comment before starting the video), and I don't see why consciousness would be any different. At this moment in time I would like if a way to trace it were discovered, I do think there are past lives and future lives but I don't think that those will have any influence on the you that you are in the present and an overwhelming majority of those past lives are not going to be very interesting, like any given person probably ran the gauntlet of being several kinds of insects and runts that lived for less than a month before getting to where they are now. That's not even getting into extra-planetary possibilities. A profound anxiety of mine is the idea that some day, I'll be somebody who is diametrically opposed to everything I stand for now. Regarding simulation theory, my position on that is even if it is true it doesn't matter to me unless a way to break out is discovered so I don't care. "Listen-listen-listen-listen-listen" is a good Aleks-ism, just like how "Yeah-yeah-yeah" is a good Becker-ism. I agree that extraterrestrial fauna is probably a lot more boring than we give it credit for. I mainly want to exploit dreams for personal amusement. It doesn't work very often.

The belief that there the only other life in space must be copies of earth is the most braindead take I’ve ever heard. The only reason Earth and life on it are how they are is pure chance and random mutation. Thinking that all other life even on worlds that have slightly different conditions to our own has to be exactly like us just seems like a narrow-minded and sad perspective to hold.
