Clinicals are a huge part of NP school, but they can be very overwhelming in the beginning! I’ve compiled my top 10 tips for how to succeed and stand out at Clinical when you are in school to become a Nurse Practitioner in order to ease some of that stress. I recently graduated from a Family Nurse Practitioner Program and utilized all of these tips in order to get the most out of my clinical experiences while in school.

Honestly since this is my 3rd rotation, I am not really excited anymore (or at this moment). Most of the patient are for follow ups... and don't need refills lol. I think I just am just tired and feeling overwhelmed

Love it! Yes, SO important to have a positive mindset. Have you heard of doing the "Superman pose" for a few seconds when anxious about a task? Apparently, it actually helps with boosting confidence. I AM SO EXCITED TO WEAR PROFESSIONAL CLOTHES... and not pajamas to work. I swim in scrubs. I hate it.

I found you on Instagram a few weeks ago and I am absolutely loving everything you offer. I am in FNP school and start clinicals in January. You make me so happy and excited and motivated that I CAN do this! Thanks for the great clinical tips. I am most excited to apply what I am learning finally- but you’re right. Pretty sure I know nothing. Which is scary. Love the little notebook- I’ve been looking for something like that. Thanks for being so motivated. And the way you do your videos is perfect. I love your enthusiasm and sarcasm too! I will be a forever follower!

@@adoculan Hi, thanks for asking.... it was great... the first day my preceptor had me observe and ask questions and then the next time she had me see pts... Its been 4weeks now and I go to the clinic twice a week... i am learning a lot and getting better in coming up with differential diagnosis. I just need to slow down and dive deeper and ask better questions cause a good history makes the difference in ruling out or ruling in certain diagnosis

I am going to have a psychiatrist as a preceptor this fall and he already told me that he will treat me like a med student and expect me to know what a med student knows.. should be interesting :)

Yeah right, my preceptors were not understanding. They expected me to know everything. I start my last clinical after a 6 month break I feel like forgot everything. I am terrified. I slept 12 hours just so I could stop feeling terrified.

I am starting midwifery in September, I haven't found any youtube channels as good as this!! Can you please just be a midwife for 6 months so you can wrap it up- like you do for nursing! hahaha Love watching all of these! x

Hi, Liz! Thank you so much for this video-so helpful! My mom passed down her Littmann Cardiology III (not IV) stethoscope to me, which she only had for a few years as a nurse in the PICU. I am hoping to keep this stethoscope throughout both nursing and NP school... but do you think it will be sufficient? Or do I need to purchase the Cardiology IV once I get to NP school? (I’m assuming the III will be fine for my undergraduate nursing degree.)

I will be attending my very first clinical rotation starting in January. I am so nervous and anxious about it. I am assigned to work with a pulmonologist. He works in clinic and an ICU. Do you have any tips specific to preparing for a pulmonology clinical rotation?

I would find a chart that compares the different types of inhalers, and have the GOLD guidelines and asthma guidelines on hand ( the charts that show you how to escalate/deescalate) medications. What a fascinating clinical, you will learn so much!

Just stumbled on ur great videos! I’m in my first level clinical which is health assessment and im struggling. I have anxiety and already am nervous. First day gitters was real! So I blanked and said the wrong thing when she asked me about a well known drug. side note: i’ve been a nurse in Surgery/trauma level 1 ICU, so treating patients in a family practice clinic is a culture shock. now I feel like she is constantly giving me the side eye bc my nursing skills are tailored to critical i’ll patients and not to mr. smith who is here for management of his 4 htn mediciations. it’s so frustrating and i’m just trying to keep my head above water. so u have any suggestions for me?

You for sure aren't supposed to know a ton during your first clinical. I had NO idea what I was doing until I had a few hundred hours under by belt. hang in there! It'll get better. Its absolutely fine to not get answers right at this point, or really, at any point.

Khris Khaid pretty much everyone does! I was doing school part time (3years) and worked full time the first two years and part time the last one. Full time students usually worked part time throughout.

Khris Khaid some places allow it. But it’s not what we are trained to do. So that doesn’t seem like a great idea to me personally!

Khris Khaid some hospitals allow it, but we aren’t trained for inpatient. So personally, I wouldn’t ever work in a hospital because I wouldn’t feel prepared for that role. Acute care NPs are trained for inpatient settings, so if that’s your thing is look into that route!

Random question- do you know what nurse practitioners do in hospitals? Rather than primary care?

Kate Nieberle they have a provider role in hospitals as well. They assess, diagnose and treat, usually on a care team. They are utilized differently depending on the setting. I’ve seen them be very autonomous, or on the other hand treated like residents 🤷🏻‍♀️. Depends on where you work!

Mine were, but it likely depends on the school and how the class is structured. If its paired with a theory portion of the class then its likely graded
