Finding a preceptor is arguably one of the most challenging parts of NP school, but I’m living proof that you can do it! This video has my tips that I used to find and secure clinical placements in your Nurse Practitioner School Program. They apply to all different types of NP programs, and I hope they help you find your match! This process is pretty stressful, but with some planning ahead, diligence, and patience, you will get one! I’ll share both the methods that I used to secure my clinical sites in NP school, as well as some methods that I’ve heard others use as well. Best of luck on your search!

Liz you are just the sweetest! Great tips and insight here for sure! My favorite preceptor was in nursing school, Chelsea in the ICU. She rocked because that place was so scary at first but she helped build my confidence. I needed small wins and by the middle of my term I was handling two complex patients (with her supervision of course) on my own. She is a gift to the world! Kind of like you are. 🤗

Still have a lot of ahead of me, but my favorite teacher so far was my Anatomy lab teacher. I'm going to a school that has the rep of being the most brutal anatomy class in the state, and she explained things in depth to the point of why were were learning them. She was a PT, and it was really neat to hear why learning these structure was so important. She also set a really good tone from the day one that kind of scared us into submission? Not exactly how I want to say that but she brought a lot of professionalism to the class and gave us the appropriate amount of seriousness to respect what we were learning and respect the people who had donated all they had to help us learn (the cadavers). I still have her number, and I hope to ask her for a reference when applying to nursing school next year! Maybe in the future I'll be able to touch bases with her to score NP clinicals!

Hi Liz! That was helpful- I have been using the google method (lol) but I didn't think about the fact that of course FQHCs would be more willing to precept students... which is great because that's the sort of setting that I ultimately hope to work in. I currently have 2 of my 3 sites secured- my program is different in that all of the didactic course work is up front with all of the clinical (except for a comprehensive review course) at the end. This makes me so anxious because I'm just hoping that it all works out! Do you have any suggestions for tactfully just checking up to be like hey we're still on for this right? I feel funny just checking in every couple months - but it definitely seems necessary. Also, you probably talked about this in other videos but how many hours of clinical per week did you typically complete/did you work through them? Thanks again!
@NurseLiz
@NurseLiz 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Mine also did the majority of the clinical at the end, which was kinda nice! My second year I did 8-16 hours of clinical a week. And worked full time. My third year I did 24 hours of clinical a week typically. And worked 12-24 hours. In terms of checking in I would just preface it by saying you will be checking in every few months to maintain communication and see if they need anything from you. That way they know you will be emailing them and it doesn’t seem random. You’ll do great!
@alisonbigler3480
@alisonbigler3480 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply! Ours is a minimum of 20 hours per week toward the beginning with a minimum of 30 at the end so I'm just trying to figure out how work is going to fit in there! I'm sure it'll all work out haha. Thanks again!

Hi Liz, I have a quick question. So I have used your tips and find someone who can precept me. I have not gotten any information regarding clinical rotation from school. They only say the information will be given in the fall semester. The clinical rotation does not start until the spring semester. I have talked to this person (who is going to precept me) in June and told her that I will reach out with more information regarding clinical rotation (either end of the summer and the start of the fall semester). I still haven't gotten any information from my school and I am getting nervous that if I should contact her periodically to make sure she does not forget about the preceptorship. (I am just an anxious person who wants to make sure that I have placement since it is very hard to get clinical placement). Should I wait until I get the information or should I text her to make sure?

I'm seriously contemplating quitting my NP program entirely. We're a third of the way through my summer semester, and I don't have a preceptor lined up in either class. Sadness, anxiety, and inability to sleep gone to anger and now to just resignation for me. Last semester many of us emailed our program coordinators for information about clinicals, and the response we got was "Don't worry about that, we'll give you information about clinicals later on in the semester, we recommend you focus on your coursework now for this semester". And they didn't. They keep on parroting the "It's YOUR responsibility" line, and I've had it. I flat-out told them that yes, it's my responsibility but it's also their responsibility to help streamline this process and clarify things for me. Maybe I'll just work only, and later on apply to other brick-and-mortar schools where they guarantee you preceptors because this is just too much. Hopefully they'll accept my transfer credits for my first two semesters.

@@NurseLiz Very kind of you! And yes, not only is it CCNE-accredited, but it's a public in-state program. It's just upsetting because I've been getting great grades in this program and feel heartbroken at the lack of support. I even looked up the pay-for-preceptor services that you spoke of in your video, and most of them are out of business now. Maybe this means I wasn't meant to be an NP in the first place :-(

It’s frustrating but they may perceive the student as slowing the provider down, which would then cost them money and productivity. Or they may not want to carry the liability and risk of having a student. For example they may think patients won’t want to see a student.

Also I’m not sure about anyone else but you can’t “cold call” that’s strictly forbidden. So you have to “known someone”. Inpatient/ED/Urgent care doesn’t count. Primary care only. Nursing homes don’t count even though they live there and it’s their primary care. So exhausting. Adding that I was 31 in line on a wait list at school specified location. I’m ready to just be done honestly.
