In his new memoir, "The Best Strangers in the World," Ari Shapiro, co-host of NPR's "All Things Considered," explains how storytelling plays out in his roles as journalist, and as singer with the band Pink Martini. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with Shapiro about his life and career; NPR legal affairs correspondent Nina Totenberg, who "discovered" Shapiro; and actor Alan Cumming, who performs a nightclub act with Shapiro, called "Och & Oy."

It’s so funny that he said “whether it’s somebody who’s sitting alone in their driveway…”I feel like ,how does he know that I’m listening in my driveway? That’s so cool that he realizes that people do that. If I am driving around and I’m still listening to NPR, I’ll sit in the driveway until the segment is finished. Love him!

He's always been a favorite of mine on the radio. Until this show I never knew what he looked like I think he's Very Handsome but I also see this is some one you can trust with your story. The kind considerate and thoughtful and when needed confidential. 😁 in my job I find that can be hard to come by at times. I love that he has a good partner and does Chase his other dreams. I also knew what I wanted to do from Childhood. Ranching Construction Forestry . I've done them all at one time or another or both. I consider myself lucky that way and we have that in common. Wonderful program as usual to the Sunday Morning team.😁👍

What a wonderful comment! Very much my feelings, especially loving both Ari & Alan. You have an enviable life doing what you wanted since young. I wasn't able to into music, many reasons, so had to work in science. Great jobs, solid career, no passion or love. Keep enjoying your life! 💞

@@joanneweiss3864 Thank you for saying nice things back. I mostly have had some Wonderful experience with Journalist as a Volunteer trying to help protect our local River as a side hobby.I played in and around it as a Child. I want today's and Tomorrow's Children to have a similar experience with whatever is left . The City job I've had the last 28 years I've met some pretty good and pretty bad reporters on thing's gone wrong . I think your team has always tried to bring out the best or at least the sensitive to others side. I'm 55 my Dad would be 103 .I was raised the Old Dutch way. I live in Utah. The farms and Farmers of my childhood are gone. The River is still here and I'm glad Sunday Morning helped raise me with a positive attitude. Thanks to you and old Farmers with Paul Harvey on in the Barn.😁

I appreciate Shapiro's candor to emphasize the fact when he says that he was not successful in his first attempt of getting an internship at NPR. Nina Totenberg as one of the "founding mothers" of NPR (along with Cokie Roberts, Susan Stamberg and Linda Wertheimer) likely had some pull to be free to select her own interns, which benefited Shapiro. However, it was an editorial oversight and failure in my view, to fail to mention that Shapiro is also a cousin of founding mother Susan Stamberg.

I remember some years ago buying tickets for a Pink Martini concert and having to do a double check to figure out if the Ari Shapiro listed in the program was THE Ari Shapiro I listened to every day on NPR. What a lovely surprise that was! Looks like he's found a way to pursue and combine all his passions. It's nice to see him out of his radio studio, because his face was definitely made for more than radio. 🙂

This presentation begs far more questions about the integrity of the mainstream media than Pauley’s going seamlessly from openly campaigning for Obama to high profile “journalist” at CBS Sunday Morning. Shapiro’s NPR sponsor, Nina Totenberg, was as close to Justice Ginsberg on whom she “reported” as dung on a stick. And the press never raised an eyebrow. Mainstream “journalists” arrogantly claim they alone can separate their incestuous personal relationships from their work. But when a conservative bought the far left Baltimore Sun this week, the mainstream media went apoplectic. But Bezos bought the Wash. [Com]Post and Carlos Slim bought the NY [S]limes. Liberal buyers all and the press never raised an eyebrow. Hypocrisy!
