Morning Edition host Rachel Martin speaks to rock star Bono about his memoir, "Surrender." They cover his early days in U2 - and the faith that's informed their work and sustained him over the years.
It was 1976. An Irish kid named Paul Hewson was trying to figure a lot of things out; his mom had died a couple years earlier, when he was just 14. Bono, as he was known, spent a lot of time at home, in Dublin, arguing with his dad and his older brother. But two goals kept him focused - to win over the heart of a girl named Alison Stewart and to become a rock star.
In the same week, both things happened - he asked Alison out (and she said yes) and he ended up in Larry Mullen's kitchen for an audition. Two other guys were there, Adam Clayton and David Evans, also known as The Edge. The four of them would go on to become one of the biggest bands of their time, U2. (And by the way, Bono is still married to Alison, now surnamed Hewson, 40 years later.)
Bono writes about these foundational relationships in his new memoir, called "Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story," releasing Nov. 1. In it, he also delves into another core relationship: his spirituality. Though never a mass-on-Sundays kind of Catholic, from a young age he was fascinated with mysticism and ritual - and Jesus.

At age 12 (1983) I lived in a deeply devoted Christian household. I was captivated by punk and new wave, but those types of records were forbidden in the house. My mom took me to a book and bible store to flip through records. Somehow U2’s War album was in the stack that I was flipping through! Couldn’t believe it! I had the green light to get that record and play it until it wouldn’t play anymore. Not to be dramatic, but U2 sort of rescued me at that time, with that record. Thank you Bono! And thank you Larry. It was because of Larry that I became a drummer. TMI, I know 😂 God bless! 🙏🏼

@@SilverLine269 No one. That album was (and likely still is) sold at Christian bookstores. While U2 isn’t considered a “Christian” rock band, they certainly have Christian themes throughout their music due to their strong faith. The song “40” is Psalm 40 from the Bible.

What a beautiful, intelligent interview. Rachel Martin obviously read Bono's memoir, that resulted in a thoughtful, respectful, in depth interview. In turn, he seemed fully engaged in the process as well.. I am a huge fan of this bigger than life Irishman who is so talented musically and a passionate activist. It was wonderful to hear him talk about the core beliefs which still guide him and the value he places on family, friends, and his faith. I respect him even more.

MY LETTER TO U2-1987 I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono! I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage! I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations. Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year! All the Best! Gary Lagstrom

Have always enjoyed listening to Bono's thoughts, he's very smart & insightful. I don't understand why people jump on him so critically. We've all had youthful & maybe naive beliefs about life, but we learn & grow as we age. It's not a mistake to be optimistic & try to help the world be a better place. Only when you force the matter on people does it become a problem & I've never heard Bono or U2 attempt to do that. They are true gentle men.

Many will see, many will see and hear. I will sing, sing a new song. I will sing, sing a new song I will sing, sing a new song. I will sing, sing a new song How long to sing this song? For as huge (and consistently good) as Bono has been for 50 years, he's amazingly humble ("the crooked wall of the ego") and authentically vulnerable. In sum: Faith and God; Spirituality and Belief: "You should not give this up," said his dad (a non-believer). The band's power is its Collective Wisdom. "The baritone who thinks he's a tenor" = punch over your weight "When you relax, your voice opens up." "I was born with my fists up; I need to put them down." Love = "Realizing one's potential." Don't squander it. Find "the gift of one's passing."

Today I passed a wishing well. 🤔 I couldn't think of anything to wish for. I think I will return tomorrow and wish Bono gets a day of the peace that I feel most days. 🙏 I hope he finds this peace.

Good to see Bono doing the interviews. I am guessing there will be a few more coming up. Hoping he does a few more podcast style interviews and less of the late show type. Looking forward to the book.

Musical tastes and it's popularity have changed so much over the past five years that I can't think of anything more irrelevant than a new U2 album being released to the general public. And yet at the same time I can't think of anything more needed right now than a new U2 album.
