Күн бұрын

Every January, I attend globalFEST at a New York City nightclub and see some of the most fantastic music I'll experience all year. Now, given the pandemic's challenges and the hardening of international borders, NPR Music and globalFEST moved the 2021 edition from the nightclub to your screen of choice and shared the festival with the world. We called it Tiny Desk Meets globalFEST. We presented 16 artists in intimate settings (often behind desks donning globes) representing more than a dozen countries.
Thirty feet below the surface in Brooklyn, 10th grader Nora Brown brings incredible, surprising depth to the Appalachian music she plays. Over the course of her Tiny Desk Meets globalFEST concert, surrounded by innumerable globes and instruments, she infuses new life and energy into the traditional songs of Addie Graham, Virgil Anderson and Fred Cockerham. Nora weaves together songs and storytelling, speaking of the great history of the music that came before her and at which she excels. This performance took place on the second night of our 2021 festival. --globalFEST

There's a Buddhist parable where a monk asks the Buddha how many more lifetimes it'll take for him to attain enlightenment, "1000" replies the Buddha, and the monk is resentful because he's spent so many years studying, eating only plain rice, generally suffering. Behind him is a dancer with the same question and the Buddha replies the same answer, "1000.". The dancer rejoices, though, exclaiming "1000 more lives of bringing smiles and joy to those around me!" If you believe in reincarnation, I'd definitely say this girl is more of the latter than the former.

The second song really stood out to me. I don't know if that style is common, but I've never seen it before. She's finger picking without picks and only two fingers, but it sounds a bit like clawhammer. And then of course she finishes with flawless clawhammer.
@andrewscease8185
@andrewscease8185 3 жыл бұрын
The complexity of that two-finger style is... I'm not sure what it is. It is deceptive. Simple and complex at once. Her playing has a wisdom which belies her chronological youth.
@rbdavisphoto
@rbdavisphoto 3 жыл бұрын
it's called Two finger thumb lead. If offers the subtleties of each note lost in Scruggs style 3 finger. It's a fairly common style among traditional banjo players and works well with clawhammer. You may want to look up Clifton Hicks.
@rbdavisphoto
@rbdavisphoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@andrewscease8185 it can have an unusual syncopation, while it looks easy, it is deceptive. You have to get away from the idea of patterns, like Scruggs Style, and work on the melody. The trick is adding 2, 1/8 notes out of a 1/4 note. You'll see her go from thumb-finger-thumb, then throw in a thumb finger finger thumb or reverse. It's a matter of convenience and style over an actual pattern to match the melody. You can't really think about it, rather it has to come naturally. Like my Uncle said, "You got it or you ain't"

It is sometimes said that youth is wasted on the young. Nora Brown is a testament that this is not always true. She has an immense talent and has worked to earn the history of her musical interest. I am looking forward to celebrating her path into the future.

such a beautiful performance. I love all three of those banjos for their special place in your lap. I leaked a tear listening to the Vega.

I absolutely love this! The way she sings reminds me so much of joiking. Such a beautiful way to breath life into her words. Not to mention her banjo skills!!
