This performance was recorded on Feb. 28, 2020. We will continue releasing Tiny Desk videos of shows that had already been taped. In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Did you know you can watch new Tiny Desk concerts on npr.org ONE WEEK before they go up on KZfaq? Click here: www.npr.org/ti...

April 6, 2020 | Josh Rogosin -- The Lumineers showed up at the Tiny Desk with family, friends and crew who travel with the tight-knit touring band. One special guest in particular was Lenny, the toddler son of lead singer Wes Schultz. As soon as Bob Boilen met Lenny, Bob searched for every toy he could find on the shelves behind his desk to entertain the restless tyke.
I've always been struck by how this band can make a crowd of 6,000 fans feel like an intimate jam session. Halfway through The Lumineers' set at the Newport Folk Festival in 2013, the entire band moved to the very back of the enormous crowd. I remember marveling that the worst spot in the field miraculously became the best.
Much of The Lumineers' Tiny Desk comes from the band's third LP, III, which tells a story of addiction in three acts. They began with gut-wrenching renditions of "Gloria" and "Leader Of The Landslide"(accompanied by a cassette recording of crickets made on iPhones and dubbed to play on a boombox). The third track is also from III, but was an assignment from director M. Night Shyamalan. He tasked Schultz and his suspender-clad writing partner, Jeremiah Fraites, with composing a song for the end credits of a film. "Jer and I worked really hard on that, and then he didn't need it," Schultz confessed. The result is the stark and haunting "Salt And The Sea,"which strikes a different chord than any other song they've written.
It wouldn't be a Lumineers show without a foot-stompin' sing-along to end the set, which came with their crowd-pleasing hit "Stubborn Love". Stelth Ulvang demonstrated a level of barefoot acrobatics unrivaled at the desk thus far, not an easy feat (or should I say, feet). Right after the Tiny Desk concert, the band and entourage rushed off to play a little club in town called the Capital One Arena for another intimate show in front of 20,000 fans.

My dad have been in the music industry for well over 40 years and heard everything. When I discovered the Lumineers, I watched the entire concept-album of the Ballad of Cleopatra. Then I called my dad and said, "You need to see this." He went in and we watched the entire thing. My dad isn't very emotional, he's 70 now, and he was taught to hold it all inside. He smiled, he cried, he laughed, and in the end, he didn't had to told me this was the most moving thing he had ever hear or seen. I just knew. There are many bands in this world - a lot are better on paper, have better equipment, and play in big stadiums, in front of bigger audiences, and rack up hit after hit. But the Lumineers are special. Not because they're virtuosos nor because their songs speak for our generation, not because they are sexy or weird or cool. The Lumineers are legendary because their music, quite simply, sounds like life.

In 2012, my friend gave me an extra ticket to see Brandi Carlile in our little resort town of 1000 people in northern WI. He told me he was going so he could see the opener, a band I've never heard of called The Lumineers. I swear my friend and I were the youngest people in the audience but once The Lumineers came out they had the whole audience singing, even at one point with a three-part harmony. After the show, they were standing around outside the venue awkwardly so my friend and I bought their CD and got it signed by them. I ripped that CD straight to my MP3 player and listened to it that summer on repeat while biking to my job washing dishes at a restaurant. I don't listen to them as much as I used to but that first album always brings me back.

Aww, late to this but ty for sharing that! ❤🙏🏼 And I one million percent agree with you about his *kind soul*. ❤❤ Ever since that album came out I’ve had him, his wife and whoever their loved one is with the addiction, in my thoughts and prayers. It’s been a few years now, I hope things are better for them. Maybe he’s updated us at some point but I haven’t seen or heard anything..? If you happen to see this and know of any updates, please let me know!! Also, as a Social Worker, educated and trained in Addiction AND TRAUMA- I HAVE TO SAY THIS- I hope Wes (and all other close family/loved ones affected by this situation and the person who these songs are about- ‼️IF THE PERSON SUFFERING FROM THE ALCOHOLISM/ADDICTION HAVE ANY TRAUMA HISTORY THEMSELVES- **THEY MUST DO TRAUMA WORK** CONCURRENTLY WITH ANY ALCOHOL/ADDICTION REHAB WORK.- - have all gotten some professional, *UP-TO-DATE SCIENTIFICALLY* and specialized therapeutic help with all of this. ‼️‼️ **ALSO ANY CHILD WHO WAS RAISED/LIVED WITH A PARENT(s)/PRIMARY CAREGIVER(s) WHO WAS AN ALCOHOLIC OR HAD ANY KIND OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROBLEM-- THAT IS *TRAUMA*. *YOU HAVE TRAUMA HISTORY. YOU may not know it or think of it in that way, **BUT YOUR BRAIN AND BODY DOES.** So please get the appropriate therapeutic help. Oh dang. I totally read your comment as if you had said WES, and not Jeremy!! Sorry!! But still completely agree with you that JEREMY has a kind soul, too!!❤ Also, are you implying that J’s Mom has addiction problem? I know Wes said in this Tiny Desk Concert vid that HIS close fam member did and was inspiration for that whole album. But I’m pretty sure when this album first came out I saw an interview with Jeremy and he said HIS close fam member was inspo for this album. So, I think both Wes and Jeremy do and both of their stories/experiences are behind /mixed together, etc. in all this album’s songs. And now that I freaking typed all that out..😂😂.. Pretty sure I saw ANOTHER INTVW with both and Wes was speaking and he said “WE” (as in him and Jeremy!) . Yeah he def did. So nm! Sorry!!❤❤

I’m a functioning alcoholic, struggling, and so much to relate to in the 2nd song “Leader Of The Landslide”....now I’m washing dishes with my tears, , strange how it feels like a good kind of hurt...I think everyone knows at least one on their life but it’s more socially accepted than any other addiction out there, yet joked more about than any other. I found the Lumineers completely by mistake; literally just scrolling through Americana/Folk on Spotify. I cried at “Stubborn Love”, “Ophelia”, “Angela”, “Cleopatra”, etc. etc. This band could write about trying to fix a broken toaster and bring me to tears. It’s just so perfectly earthy, and natural. Other country singers sound like the parts of life that test you, or bring you more joy than you’ve ever felt before. The Lumineers just sound like living.
