I have both sizes and love them. You can get replacement gasket material at most big box hardware stores. It is just adhesive backed weather stripping. I had to fill in a similar gap in one of mine and it has been briefly submerged a few times when I flood my raft. So far no water intrusion since filling in the missing section of gasket.

There was a Canadian company that used to make these identical boxes. I think we called it a “York” box. I remember as kid, in the days old gray bucket boats with inflated thwarts and no real dryboxes, the plastic York box was a space age and much coveted piece of equipment. Pretty cool that NRS brought them back.

NRS used to sell York boxes 15 years ago. These look the same, and I didn't realize they were different. Maybe NRS bought the company, or ordered NRS branded boxes?

I doubled up the gasket with a wider gasket and it is so much more water tight, still not a dry box but better than what NRS ships out. I have yet to see one of these where the gasket actually went all the way around the groove.

We have a couple of those boxes, one like you have plus the larger version, and we love them for smaller groups or solo trips. I wouldn't trust one to stay dry in a flip or is submerged for an extended length of time but otherwise they stay completely dry. FYI: the bigger size top is a bit more flexy so I wouldn't stand or maybe even sit on it unless you're pretty light.

My guess is they left the spacing in the gasket so it doesn't collapse when cold, or bulge when it gets hot.

We bought a Yeti loadout gobox 30 this season and we love it, except for the size. We wish it was a 40, or 33% larger. They packed a lot of features in a little box, it just doesn’t quite fit all of our kitchen kit. We might end up with one of these boxes too.

I thought long and hard about the Yeti GoBox (I love its interior tray) but ended up with the NRS Boulder box for just the reason you mentioned. It’s definitely a handy little box, and a tad bigger than the Yeti, at 1/2 the price.

OK, I have to ask, exactly how dry is a "good approximation of dry"? Seems like a vicious circle trying to wrap my head around that one. What is the advantage of this box over a good dry bag for storing kitchen gear as I do on river canoe trips?.

It's about as dry as normal mediocre dry bags. Your stuff will probably be dry but if you submerge it all bets are off. I've used dry bags for kitchen in the past but like this more because it's easier to access and organize things in camp, your kitchen stuff won't get crushed, and the lid is actually quite useful for things like drying dishes and a table for playing cards.

They were originally designed for canoes. The large one will fill width of canoe perfectly right up to the gunwales (making a nice table surface for map reading and such) while the smaller one fits well on or under the bow seat.

I own the bigger size one and I use it in place of my metal dry Box now. My Partner stove goes into my rocket box. I am working towards not using rocket boxes any longer. I use those for my groover. Any ideas for a lighter groover system you would use?
