Cook food prior to trip. Freeze. Reheat as needed with a simple camp stove. Paper plates, use your own water bottle, REI has some plastic sporks that are spoon on one end, fork on the other. When your done, throw paper plates in fire, no soap or washing needed. Use a nonstick pan and wipe with paper towel. Reduce space requirements, fuel, time, and less soap getting into river.

Very well thought-out kitchen box, thank you. Ref the DO, I found an 8" bailed, 2-handed thick walled aluminum DO shaped pot at Big Lots a few years ago. The cover acts like a DO top when inverted though I had to drill out the cover handle (so it didn't stick into the food) and replaced it with an eye bolt so I could grab it with a fork or stick or multi-tool. It only weighs in at 13 oz. (for a 8" DO). I have actually backpacked and ski trekked with it for a nice home-cooked meal for 1 or 2 people. So far it has held up on charcoal, fire coals, and small stove tops (that cook from the bottom up, LOL). Good boating.

Just repacking my camp kitchen, what great timing. I like the idea of nixing the plates and just going with bowls, think I'm following suite.

Just remember hot food in a metal bowl is extremely hard to hold onto, a pot holder, pot coozie (bubble wrap insulation works great), extra rag.... excreta helps a lot, you wont burn your hands and drop your food.

@@dgrfsthrgsergwrtghasefq that is a fantastic tip, if only I had heard this a few years ago when I damn near burnt my thumb prints off haha. This is absolutely a must haha cause what I learned is when you are hungry enough, you will forget metal gets hot haha

What are your thoughts on the gravity filter? I have the 10l and keep getting clogged filters. Ever have any issues?
@GearGarageTV
@GearGarageTV 3 жыл бұрын
I've only had issues on silty rivers. In my experience it works well on clear and clean rivers.

Seems reasonable. Mine has clogged twice on Sierra snowmelt very close to the source. Just seeing if you have had any similar experiences. Thanks for all you do!!

@@zacharysmith8088 We use these all the time on rivers like the Chetco and Middle Fork of the Salmon and they work great.

What type of containers do you use to store trash, recycling and ashes so they don't contaminate the river?
@GearGarageTV
@GearGarageTV 2 жыл бұрын
We use metal dry boxes for our normal raft trips. For lighter weight trips we use buckets with gamma seal lids.

What about lighters? I also backpack a lot and had a couple weekend trips ruined by lighters that wouldn’t work. (Now always carry 2)

I carry the mini bics because they are so light and compact. I have one lighter in my small tool bag (headlamp, knife, steripen, ect.), one lighter in food bag, and one lighter in my emergency first aid kit.
