Hawkmount , beyond Dora Creek, on the mainline north from Sydney, consisted of miles of winding 1 in 44 grades. Friday nights would find enthusiasts camped by the lineside to witness the weekend action. These films, by the late Neville Hatcher, show spectacular scenes of numerous loco combinations, including double headed Garratts, hard at work in the steam era.

To film these before they all but disappeared was a great service to our Australian railway history. Thank you for posting these.

I have some fond nostalgic memories of riding a train from Melbourne to Canberra in early 1970. Steam powered the train in NSW and it was a magnificent trip. We left OZ in 1973 for a tour in Africa and later in Iran. Australia was wonderful......

I was born thirty year's to late. Back then trains had a personality, now they look the same as each other just different paint schemes and companies.

Superb filming. The AD 60 Garratt was a terrific work horse. The early diesels were toys by comparison.

Great that 6029 has returned to the rails but like all preserved steam locos, she will never bark like this again.

I can only imagine how it must have felt being on the side of the track filming those hard working double heading garratts taking a fully loaded train up the grade? Absolutely awesome! My filming of The Ghan coming into the station in Adelaide pails into insignificance in comparison. But at least it is a great passenger train.

All the Garrett's had gone in England when I was a trainspotting kid. The LMS had them built like 2 0-6-0's stuck together. Not a good idea. Apparently they were less than successful . I was obviously in the wrong country at the time . The double headed Garrett's are just amazing. I'm really glad that I found your site

The LMS and LNER told Beyer Peacock to change their Garratts design to their ideas and standard parts. Result was the poorest design Garratts built, apart from the New Zealand six cylinder version. Beyer Peacock knew how to design and build a Garratt better than the LMS and LNER.

G day John D, do you know of the 8 cylinder M class garrats that operated in Tasmania? How are they regarded? Gj tas.
@johnd8892
@johnd8892 3 жыл бұрын
@@graemejohnstone7370 The M class were so rare and scrapped so early that even few railfans know of them. Little documented other than they were very smooth and fast. This was a problem on the lowish quality narrow gauge track they ran on as the drivers could easily be lulled into driving too fast. The resulting crashes combined with the high maintenance cost of eight cylinders had them scrapped early by the twenties. When I raise the topic of these eight cylinder double Atlantic Garratts, most usually say impossible.

Yes, Ruffian, the streamlining on the 38 class was based on the NH I-5.

What job it would've been for those blokes. Especially the crews on the locos without automatic stokers. Loved my time working steam and when you got on a decent bank, working to keep the steam pressure while keeping the boiler water level from dropping out of the glass, was what it was all about. What was the tonnage and number of wagons on those double headed garratt coal trains? You NSW guys had it over Qld, we didn't ever have double headed garratts and Max drawgear limit on a single was around the 500t mark, more if banked .

Must have been great on the job, Adrian. I think the Newstan trains were about 1200 tons.

@BelbinVideo I only worked on steam as the new generation of Heritage train crews. But our tours during 2015 150yr QR celebrations to the North and Western Qld really gave me a feel for what it was like. Would've loved to work heavier freight, about 450t is the heaviest we hauled. I have worked in several different depots over the last 24yrs and it loved getting to go back with Steam from 2012 to 2019. 1200t on 8 cylinders now that is Power isn't it. !

I believe the Garrats were capable of hauling 900 tonne trains on 1 in 40 grades and up to 1600 tonne on the level but it would be doing only 40 mph with that weight

@evangiles4403 she'd be flying at 40mph. I don't doubt the weights you mentioned. Very impressive whichever way you look at it

Another classic! Those double headed Garretts really work hard. I've taken to lowering the playback speed to half or three quarters so I get a better view of the engines & trains.

I doubt that many diesels if let to deteriorate to the condition of some of those Garrett’s would be able to move under their own power let alone pull a train up these gradients.
