@@UJustGotGamed Have you ever heard about nuclear waste? Is there a terminal storage now, 70 years after they started. No.
@niasty93773 ай бұрын
@@AndreasDelleske Around 95% of the nuclear waste produced is low-level waste, which includes tools and clothing exposed to radiation, and a lot of it can be safely recycled, or stored even in landfills. When it comes to high-level waste, long-term storage of it is mostly a solved problem, as shown by the Onkalo repository in Finland, which is complete and only needs a license to start operating. I heard that in the US there are plans for a similar repository, but until then, dry cask storage will be safe for many decades.

@3DRiley_5 жыл бұрын
Close, S.C.R.A.M. means safety crontrol rod axe man, it ties back to when the first experimental reactors had directly controlled absorber (control) rods. The man on top of the reactor operating these could "cut a rope" to drop a central rod which should alone absorb enough neutrons to cause a negative reactivity coefficient/subcritical assembly (meaning the last time generation has more neutrons than the current) and bring it into a hot-standby (shutdown after load with the primary coolant still hot and pressurized). This is clearly a "The China Syndrome" referrence, although it's not quite right.

@tjyoyo34 жыл бұрын
nope because all scrams should theoretically work as long as theres backup power, the only reason chernobyl exploded was because of the graphite tips on the SCRAM rods
@araujofi4 жыл бұрын
No SCRAM is a trigger for explosions, not even in Chernobyl, it exploded there because many security protocols were previously violated. Reactors 1,2 and 3 were also shut down and did not explode.
@MatthijsvanDuin3 жыл бұрын
@@araujofi The scram _did_ trigger the explosion, and the particular state the reactor was in where the EPS-5 button changed function from "shut down reactor" to "explode reactor" (which is something that should obviously not be possible in any sane reactor design) could easily have happened without violating any security protocols. The key ingredients were the state of the reactor fuel (high fuel burnup) resulting in low operating reactivity margin, having recently operated at high power, and then operating for a while at low power (200MW) before hitting EPS-5. To quote Annex I to INSAG-7: "The Operating Procedures permitted operating conditions similar to those prevailing at Chernobyl Unit 4 on 26 April 1986 and they might have occurred without any intervention on the part of the personnel. We only need to assume a perfectly possible situation in which triggering of EPS-3 occurs when the reactor is operating initially at rated power with an ORM of 26 manual control rods. Under these conditions, approximately one hour after triggering of EPS-3 the ORM could have fallen to less than 15 manual control rods at a reactor power of 200-300 MW(th), and any further action, whether automatic or remote, to shut down the reactor could have led to a similar repetition of the events of 26 April 1986."
