Nuclear weapons in modern arsenals and their catastrophic effects

Today’s nuclear arsenals are much more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. Experts are concerned that a modern nuclear war will trigger the feared “nuclear winter”, which could kill 5 billion of the world’s population. Asia First’s Julie Yoo explores the powerful nuclear bombs of today, and atmospheric professor Owen Brian Toon explains the catastrophic effects a nuclear winter can bring.

Lol, no worries. It won't occur because due to Russia/Ukraine. Russia is not gonna use any tact nukes in ukraine as a few wouldn't have enough effect to turn to war back in Russian favour. Dropping any nuke at all tho will leave Russia without any allies and an absolute pariah to everyone. NATO is not going to retaliate with nukes if Russia drops one in Ukraine. So it won't happen. Russia is just abusing the fear of nukes by talking about them, tries to bully NATO citizens into telling their leaders to stop providing aid to Ukraine. It's all a game and the media is just clickbaiting.

this is being spouted as a new development in history, but the fact is the UK and USA have known this would happen at this time. we're being kept in the dark about the actual reasons putin is doing this and his plan has been active for over 10 years. Covid lockdowns were simply the western governments chance to secretly have their citizens practice lockdown proceedures. before covid, most people had no idea how to cope with a lockdown, now we are trained and prepared to stock for weeks, find things to do in isolation and wearing masks were all subtle training of the population for this event.

RIGHT NOW the car is in the air and upsidedown. nothin they do inside the car is going to cause the car to end up driving away undamaged(this is where the planet is rught now, the car has flipped, its just a matter of waiting for the impact). its going to impact the ground first then a large tree. all the occupants can hope for is to survive the crash and recover from the injuries, they have two choices, 1, rebuild the car but dont give it such a powerfull engine, or 2, dont rebuild the car and learn to walk again.

@@bobafett5757 I think the impact of the nuclear winter in this video may be a worst-case scenario. There was another study done looking at a war between Russia and NATO that indicated that the US would lose about 80 million in the first few days, Europe would lose a similar number and Russia would lose almost 100 million, mainly because Russia's population is concentrated in a small area while the US and Europe are more spread out. These numbers would quickly go up if there the surviving population wasn't moved to unaffected areas and the injured were not properly medically treated. The nuclear winter would be more like a nuclear fall, but crop failures would push the total death toll to about 1 billion. One billion dying is certainly better than five billion dying, but I am not sure whether the person that died instantly in the blast or survived and faced starvation and the tough conditions after the war was the "lucky" one. Hopefully we will never find out.

@@stephanledford9792 I seem to remember reading about some debate over the severity of the "nuclear winter" theory too a long time ago. Do you have a link or reference to where you heard about that? I suppose it all depends upon how big the fires are that are lit by a nuclear attack. Also, I would expect that most weapons would be set for air bursts rather than surface bursts, and that would limit radiation contamination to virtually nil. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were air bursts, and there was very little radioactive contamination. Hardened bovernment and military installations would likely be the only areas hit with surface bursts.

I appreciate the willingness to talk and discuss difficult situations. It's not common that we see that anymore these days and I find it better if we talk about things rather than not.. I really don't want the day where we miss use this beneficial tool, as a horrific weapon.. After seeing videos that taught me just how much we have improved our understanding and capabilities of nuclear energy options and all sorts of different types of methods that are so much safer. I realized that even tho we had a traumatic past, and sadly weapons are thought of if you mention nuclear energy. Regardless, I'm a big supporter of wanting to rebuild our future electrical grid with modern advanced nuclear energy options because the more you learn, the more you realize that back when we were no where ready to be operating things, the reactor designs, the fuel sources, the engineering, the terrible electronics technology.. and the complete lack of understanding of safety measures and radiation... It's honestly really difficult because I know so many people are traumatized from nuclear energy due to our past but really I strongly believe we will heal and do so much better if we can ever give it a chance again. ~{This is why we need to invest in modern advanced nuclear energy options. Small form reactors, LFTRs, Thorium Reactors, liquid reactors, with modern technology, engineering, material science, safety measures understandings and designs, computer technology, robotics, It will really allow any nation to be pretty much be energy independent. Less reliant on fossil fuels. They'll have efficient, stable electrical grids and the rest of the grid could experiment with alternative power sources, etc. We need to heal from the trauma of our past and see that it came solely from Us not understanding what we were doing, not have advanced enough technology, material science, engineering, safety measures, understanding of how to go about everything, etc. This source of energy will greatly help the world improve towards the future and lowering emissions more than anything else could while having a very stable electrical grid system. Currently we have alternative energy options but the majority of our grid is powered off of fossil fuels and emission producing sources of energy. We will be so much better going forward commiting to modern advanced nuclear energy options.}~

Hell on Earth plus the millions whohave sufferred of debilitating diseases like cancers brought about by the aftermath fallout of radioactive substances in the soil n in the air they breath in. And now with the invention of the Hydrogen bomb with its 20 to 30 times more potent you can just compute and multiply its effect k!

It doesn't work like that. Going up 30x in yield doesn't mean 30x more people die. It could in some cases. A modern bomb over Hiroshima could have killed a million people at the time. Maybe twice that today. Way less than 30x who did die there in 1945 (and the following years). In NYC the 30x might work better but still too high.

It is good to hear someone has seriously evaluated this. It seems to match up well with the mental models I have from a basic study of the subject. (I am not a climate scientist; just someone who has studied up some on the subject.) Something I would like to see tackled is the long term outlook. My mental models have come up with a nuclear winter will be followed by a catastrophic climate summer, possibly even tipping Earth into another Venus. The reasons for this is all of the crap that will enter the atmosphere and environment and persist much longer than ashes. You have a whole lot of CO2 going up from everything burning. You have a whole lot of methane going up from smashed infrastructure. The Nordstream pipelines alone leaking are said to account for 1/3rd of annual greenhouse gas emissions as methane is a very potent greenhouse gas when just released in the the atmosphere. Now imagine basically all natural gas infrastructure in Russia and NATO countries smashed and leaking out with everyone who could shut off the gas flow dead. Not good. Then you will have piles of nuclear power plants catastrophically fail as a secondary round of irradiating the world triggered by the damage and death toll of the first rounds of nuking everyone and everything. So now as the world thaws, really nothing can grow and start soaking up the CO2 emitted because it is Red Forest kind of dead if it hasn't already burned away. The following summer with everything dead and unable to grow again because of the massive radiation both primary from nuclear bombs and secondary from nuclear power plants around the world melting down and exploding and CO2 and methane releases, heating up and cooking off the water into the atmosphere, which water is a greenhouse gas, as well as other feedback effects with warming, is how the remaining people will likely die and the Earth will become permanently uninhabitable. After all the Sun gets bigger and hotter with time and with Earth tipped over into another Venus, this planet will be done for all time.

The pilots of the plane that dropped the tsar bomba was hand picked by the leader of the Soviet union himself and their safety could not be guaranteed. Dropped remotely by a ground controller, a parachute was put on the bomb to lower its rate of acceleration and give the pilots of the plane a longer time to escape. Tsar Bomba II was going to be the sequel to the original TSar Bomba, coming in with a explosive field at a whopping 100 Megatonnes. However due to the 1971 Soviet-US Treaty which prohibited and banned further nuclear bombs construction and test. This bomb never became reality.

The main reason we have so many nukes is not to bomb every single city but rather just to keep them spread around and assure mutual destruction if attacked, since a smaller stockpile could potentially be targeted and compromised by a first strike prior to retaliation. A lot of work has gone into reducing these stockpiles over the last few decades in the interests of non proliferation - the USA and USSR used to have tens of thousands, each.
