I was a Professor at USMA for over 10 years and I loved every single minute of teaching cadets. I used to teach at a civilian university and I wanted to learn how to teach off of chalkboards and boy did I learn. All courses are taught to groups of 20 cadets. Each classroom has a leader who reports in. Then they get 45 minutes of lecture which is normally the instructor asking cadets questions about the lesson for the day. In theory, the cadets are supposed to do the lesson BEFORE they come to class and then be able to discuss questions. After 45 minutes the cadets get up and work problems for the remaining 45 minutes. For each problem, a cadet is selected to brief the class on a solution. When you leave USMA, you know your stuff because you are made to show you are learning each and every day in every class taken. It was the best assignment I ever had as an active duty Army Officer. I would have stayed longer but my wife hated the snow. Even after 20 years, I still miss it. All instructors teach from blackboards and we do have overhead projectors that I used occasionally. Wow, time flies.

My son is a Plebe right now for the class of 2025 and I have to say this video is so wonderful. Very nostalgic. I love older videos and seeing what West Point looked like back then is awesome

For anyone who wants to know, prior to West Point becoming co-ed there was a woman's college called Ladycliff, which was where those co-eds were from. Ladycliff is now West Point Museum and Visitor Center.

I love these films, they show another side of the "american spirit" and what made that country a great nation. As a foreigner, I watch them with admiration. It´s incredible the amount of profesionalism that they had achieved since those days... Honor, integrity, respect. To some, those are only words, to others, they are guiding principles..... After seeing the news and wikileaks, I wonder how much of these principles are still left in that great country that is the U.S?

Graduations were bittersweet during that time. They were going off to war with the probability that they would not survive.

Very interesting. I know a few who have gone to West Point. Great school. I am glad they finally made it co-ed. Perhaps in 9 years or so my daughter will attend.

Very interesting. I wonder what a video would look like now, addressing the Academy? Some of those buildings were gone before our arrival. Some, like the library gave changed, as have the tines. Did you recognize who was coaching the cadet on putting?

Ah, yes, those were the days, my friend, and as for Westmoreland, remember the December 1966 cover of Newsweek, the lead story was "General Westmoreland: a Recipe for Victory?"

***** Never Like Ole Westy. Too West Point, IMHO. Met Westy in Viet Nam in July 1965. I was Standing At Attention with the Marines up in I Corps and Westy was doing a Drive By. Newsweek is out of Business ???

So do I have this right? West Point is an officer training academy but is also like a university where you can study for a degree? Is this a fee paying institution or is the education free but with a minimum service obligation?
