Nugget or nuanced? 2023 Hyundai i20 N review

This week, we drive the 2023 Hyundai i20N.
In an age where hot hatches have moved on to become something else, what is the OG hot hatch formula like in 2023.
Aside from the awesome Ford Fiesta ST, this is the only real type of lightweight hot hatchback on the market today.

This is a really good review. Having seen may others that talk about how great it is, and I myself owning one i always thought - its OK and even really good BUT... Its not fast in a straight line - in the bends it comes alive and is awesome. Its firm for daily - but that was a given (however after a while is noticeable). Its built to a price - and that's not a negative - the value for money for what its to be is second to none. it not noisy on course chip roads on the fwy. just don't think its perfect.... that said i look forward to driving it tomorrow.

"Rev Hang" is present in "Normal" mode and "Eco" mode when driven hard. When cruising along in these modes you don't notice it. HOWEVER in "N" mode it's non-existent. It's an "N" car - Get it out of "Eco" mode and into "N" mode and drive it like it's meant to be driven and stop complaining! For less than 40k in Australia it is outstanding value for money and aside from the Focus ST (which aren't available new anymore) nothing comes close. It's a purpose built and engineered track car straight out of the showroom. 0-100m in 6.2 secs, LSD on the front, lightweight 1250kg, sticky Pirelli P Zero's all round. The car is so much fun to drive on the track or up in the mountains. Great video - Look forward to the next one :)

Even N mode, you still can’t get the perfect shift. It needs some work in terms of calibration, but it’s alright overall for a cheap nugget 😊 I still love it heaps personally - Thanks for watching

My partner has a phantom black i20N and she loves it. It does need revving hard but that is its throwback charm, together with a real handbrake and slick manual gears. It is also pretty economical for a performance car.

That was possibly my least liked review of the i20N. The substance of this car is that it's a well rounded performance hatchback that's also practical, economical and affordable. You gave the impression that it's fatally flawed because it's cheap and went into the test without doing your homework. The engine is quite unique since it's the first one with constantly variable valve dwell[CVVD] and because of that has huge potential. It's very flexible and happy to pull from 1,500rpm with strong torque from 2,000rpm - 4,000rpm. That means you can leave it in 6th gear at 60 - 65kph and accelerate smoothly and strongly from there without shifting down. It also means overtaking quickly from about 80kph - 90kph is best in 4th and even then you can find yourself fighting steering torque. That means in the real world this engine is a sweet gem and when you need/want to get more it's happy to pull to the limiter. As mentioned, the rev hang is missing in N mode but you chose to drive in normal. There is a fix for the rev hang at the dealer too. Lastly, the gearbox is a peach using rev matching at the highest setting. So much better than the ND MX-5 and GT86.

Tell me you're an owner without telling me you're an owner, lol. I'll ask Hyundai Australia about the "fix at the dealer" - last time I checked, there was no fix. I actually sung its praises as a basic and excellent billy cart - did you not watch the end of the video?

Ford has discontinued the Fiesta and you forgot the Polo GTI... I'd hardly call the i20N "basic" either, assuming the spec you get over there is similar to the UK, it's pretty much loaded with toys!

Great videos. Will def' follow. Got this little pocket rocket myself as I wanted to try out track racing. I don't think that it needs to be faster as you will likely spend most of your time on public roads anyway. And it is so much FUN on the race track and twisty roads. It makes your heart pump without scaring the shit out od you 😂This cars makes you feel everything and that's fantastic. Rev hang is a bit of an issue, even in N mode, but by no means a deal breaker. 6 step manual transmission, front wheel drive with mLSD - the definition of the good life ❤ I think it's unfair to compare this with the i30n. Its 80% more expensive than the i20n. As you mention, the only real comparisons are Fiesta St and maybe Polo GTI - maybe even the Golf GTI but that's more on the i30n side. Daily driver, 120 km away and back three times a week. Not comfortable tbh but I can live with it coming from a 208 HDI 2014.

I test drove one and completely agree, I also own an M2 comp so I'm probably spoiled. I had a mk 8 Fiesta ST before and remember it being much more fun and put a smile on my face even back to back with the m2, i20n just puffs out for me and felt kinda dull. What are your thoughts on the ST? I think I may get one again, the brakes were just weak as I recall.

I owned an ST for a while and loved it - I think it's a better road car overall. The Hyundai is superior out of the box on a track; but yeah, most of us drive on the road meaning the ST is a better pick.
