It’s much more complex than that. Her father threw Japan into conflict, and his actions destroyed the peace that the previous Taiko worked hard for. There’s a very large chance that Buntaro has fought in battles that were caused by her father’s actions. He doesn’t dislike her, although he does seem to truly disdain her lineage (common at the time in Japan; you died for your family’s sins). Her marriage to him has become a source of scorn: his wife is the daughter of *that man*. But he likes her, so won’t let her kill herself. She’s cold to him, so being the emotionally repressed man that he is, he responds violently and beats her. However, the show never hints that he has sexually abused her, which means he values her honour. He doesn’t know how to reach her, so he’s very jealous that Blackthorne has succeeded easily where he has failed repeatedly. Mariko has had to endure his harsh treatment, but I don’t think she has ever tried to warm up to him, even when he was putting in effort. She’s so guilt-stricken by her father’s crimes that all she wants to do is die. Buntaro is a super interesting character, one of the best in the show. Fiercely loyal, yet emotionally immature; really strong yet strangely shaky; good son, good vassal and soldier, trash husband. He’s watching his world fall apart. In the course of the show, his brother-in-law, nephew, and father have all died. He himself was left for dead and barely survived. Man had been through a lot.

A perfect specimen for the human condition. You win some, you lose some. Whatever happens at the end of the journey, the goal that is set at the very beginning and every step taken from that day on should be the finding of thy self. @@emmanuela7528 That is a very good explanation. I agree with you, but to me it still doesn't justify the bad things he's done to her, and even fuji. There is pity for him, even if mariko was icy towards him as a result.

Buntaro sama. The honorific "san" wasn't used during that period and came along much later. That's what I liked about this series over the original. They were much more true to the period in clothing, mannerisms, honorifics and other ways of speech, etc.

This is actually a pretty normal Japanese relationship.

The he should have treated her better.

He's not a hot head, he was just tormented by his relationship with Mariko, The true hot heads are Fuji's husband and Toranaga's son.

The show doesn't give us a balanced perspective, it doesn't show us *how* Mariko has been emotionally tormenting Buntaro all these years, but always makes sure to beat us over the head with how violent and agresssive he is with her.

Not correct. Mariko sama spoke of the many years of physical abuse and Toranaga was aware of it saying "A husband may do with is wife as he wishes."

@@rikudou947 You must have been watching a different edit of the show because this is not correct. Mariko spoke of the 8-fold fence; "I will give my husband nothing, not even my hate. For that is what he deserves." She did nothing to deserve his treatment towards her. Once a year she only asked to be freed from her life to join her family.

FACTS! Buntaro is a great warrior who survived death and then has to sleep in the same house as the man his wife had an affair with. On top of the fact his wife hates him for decisions her father made. And you can see him constantly reaching for her but she "gives him nothing". As a viewer you sit there and ask "what did he do to deserve this?".

What do you expect from an arrange marriage where women have no say in who they are expected to spend the rest of their lives with and marry complete strangers
