I was 14 in 1971 and just starting to become interested in the music culture. I worked weekends and vacations picking oranges to earn money to buy a very nice stereo system from Radio Shack.

Three of those were written by Carole King - Its Too Late, You've Got a Friend, and Go Away Little Girl. Far and away the best American songwriter ever.

A Brand New Key - Melanie is also a great song, even though it was also a Number 1 hit in December 1971. It was more of a novelty song, but is was not a one-hit wonder. 👍👌😊

I like all of these songs that were picked out for this TikTok including Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World"; Rod Stewart's "Maggie May"; Carol King's "It's Too Late"; Tony Orlando's "Knock Three Times"; Janis Joplin's "Me & Bobby McGee"; The Rolling Stones' " Brown Sugar"; James Taylor's "You've Got A Friend"; The BeeGees' "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart"; Donny Osmond's "Go Away Little Girl"; Paul & Linda McCarthy and Wings' "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey". I also like most songs of that era, year, decade and of course most songs of yesteryear..

Please appreciate the variety. EVERYTHING used to get played on the radio. We all shared the same musical experiences. It got too narrow over time. The Ramones and Elvis Costello sang about this sad evolution. Today terrestrial radio is an “I Heart Radio” monoculture wasteland. At least Spotify does recommend new things to help us grow our tastes, but we’re still in our own narrow musical neighborhoods. Music was so special and shared back then.

In my grade 4 class, we would sing "Joy to "Joy to the World, " "Maxwell Silver Hammer, " and " Hey Jude, " to name a few. Our teacher was a Japanese bombshell, Miss Maxwell. She must have had the nerves of a Saint. She got the whole class gazzuo's. We played a couple of songs using them. As a grade 4 my idea of a bombshell could have been way off, but I wasn't. I asked my grade 7 teacher, Mr Mann, and he said she was a ten. It had a lasting impression on me. I married a very pretty and really smart Thai girl. The memories old songs will bring back. By the way, I asked how pretty Miss Mawell was when I was around 30 years old. Mr Mann was a good teacher and sportsman. I see him a few times a year at the golf course. It's a public course and opened in 1990. You won't find many public courses any better I played with my lifelong friend and golf partner the secind day Cordova Bay opened. He introduced me to golf when I was 12. I am now just turning 62 and 3 rays later he turns 61. We are pretty good partners. Our strength we are both good putters, and we hang anywhere from a 6 to 8 handicap. Cheers to Mr Mann and Miss Maxwell

Music was still so new and exciting then. Look at what The Beatles did in just 8 years!! There was drastic change in rock music from year to year. I s\think rock music,...popular music has been stagnant since about 91. Of course the whole industry is kind of gone too.

Janis Joplin died in October 1970 yet you say she has a #1 hit in 1971. How did that happen?
@ranchokitty1Ай бұрын
just like Otis Redding's, Sitting at the dock of the bay was #1 after he died.
@rickbrenner607928 күн бұрын
Posthumous hit? The same as John Lennon’s, “(Just Like) Starting Over”, which also went to Number 1 after he was senselessly murdered. It spent 5 weeks at #1 on US Billboard’s Hot 100. From John & Yoko’s underrated album, “Double Fantasy”.
