Thought by many to be the best car in the world, this 34 year old Mercedes was their high point. Never again will a car be made and designed in this fashion but can it really be better than most modern cars?

Would be really interesting to have a comparison test between bmw e34 and merc w124 with comparable engines. 300E 24v/535i or 530i/300E 12v. Audi had nothing really comparable at that time. The thing with these carmakers at that time is that they had very distinct "personalities" as a marque and the cars were really quite different. That still sticks on them today altough the cars of today are almost characterless and very little sets them apart.

I always think it is weird when Europeans refer to a Mercedes as a Merc...because as an American, when I hear that, I think Merc for Mercury....but I get it, that brand was never popular or even that well known in Europe.

Very simple .. the new model is much stronger, more rigid and has so much more safety built in... Today's Mercedes you'd potentially avoid the accident or if not walk away lightly injured . Pre 2000 you would have a lot less chance of survival even in a bigger Mercedes... Not saying I don't like older Mercedes..

Quite simple why it's heavier.... It's much safer, much more rigid and has much more sound insulation materials.. plus wheels and tyres are bigger.. it also has much more standard equipment...

Actually, I think the W123 was built much better than the W124. I have owned both: a 300T turbodiesel SW and an E300 4matic petrol inline six SW. The 124 was quieter and had better road holding, but the 123 was a masterpiece.

I have to agree. I've travelled in a few cars recently and each time I've been bounced about far too much. Peugeot 3008, my own golf estate mark 7, polestar 2, jaguar xf, Citroen C5 mark 2 (you'd expect better in a Jag and a citroen), a new shape Mercedes C class. I don't remember ever really noticing ride comfort that much in the 90s in our E34 and E39 5 series or our Ford Granada. Although the Granada wallowed badly on B roads. The rest didn't. The W124 taxi we had on an airport run impressed the most with it's sheer comfort. I do remember how quiet it was and it was a diesel. Of course the roads were also far better back then so I'm curious if it's the roads or harder suspension that makes travelling in the back now feels rougher than it used to.

@@edwinblank58 Not necessarily. There actually was a model "300D 2.5 Turbo" with the OM602 straight 5 turbo in some markets. 1990-1993 model years only. Chassis code was 124.128 if I'm not mistaken. What he says could be 100% correct. But yes, for the most part 250D generally means 2.5 straight-5 OM602 and 300D generally means 3.0 straight-6 OM603. Then in the later ones "E250 Diesel" meant OM605 (93-ish to 96-ish) and "E300 Diesel" meant OM606 (94-96) but there are some exceptions and there were some strange models with confusing badging. I have a bunch of old diesel Mercedes. Great old cars! Sadly getting harder to find. A lot of them exported to third world countries like North Africa etc. I was thinking of going over there with a few trucks, buying a bunch of the best ones and taking them home again. Probably be able to buy them there for next to nothing. A lot of the old Mercedes exist in Mauritania where an entire years wages is like £800. Very poor countries yet they have all these great old 80s and 90s Mercedes and all we got have crappy electric vehicles and modern Benz.. the era of affordable motoring is over in the West. I remember great cars like this for a few hundred quid. Now it's £20k for a used five year old hatchback that breaks down twice a month. Then in a few years we'll not even be able to buy new fuel cars. Just electrics. Sad times. I can't justify any of the modern cars nowadays.. they don't interest me and they cost too much. The only modern stuff that interests me is maybe AMG and I can't even justify the price or fuelling costs. So I just drive old Benz.

I have a 1996 E320 Estate. 180,000 miles on the clock and we use it as our main car - all year round. It has the 7 seat option, which we also use as we have 4 children. One of the children is car sick - except in the Mercedes where the rear facing seat in the boot seems to solve the problem. Yes, we have the usual problems with rust in the front wings and the rear under the side windows. But spares are readily available, including direct from Mercedes. New wings aren’t expensive, most of the parts are pretty cheap and they are incredibly easy to work on. We have taken it to the South of France several times and use it regularly to head to mid France. Never a problem.

Most Mercedes mechanics enthusiasts agree that the W124 is the model that will last forever unlike the new ones, I also think the W124 design hasn't been bettered since Mercedes nowadays doesn't look solid but looks tacky and disposable compared to the W124 they also don't have a strong Mercedes design language identity looking like most other cars.

One of the best features of many older cars like this is the visibility to look out of the car and see things. I don't miss the 300 performance because it is not a sports car; it is a supremely comfortable, stylish and relaxed cruiser. The fit and finish of everything and attention to detail is awe-inspiring. I owned the bigger brother to the C124 which was a 1984 C126 500 SEC. I had that car for almost 6 years and still have dreams that I own it. It was a fabulously enjoyable car to own and in the end I ended up getting another 5 w126s but they were all saloons. At the time I thought that maintenance was costly but after owning a w220 & a w222 I've changed my mind. As you say these cars were still machines without all the computerised gubbins to annoy you when things go wrong. One last thing which I know others have already mentioned is that a modern car is not necessarily safer than a pre-merger Mercedes, cars like the w123,124,126,140 and others that they made before it all went wrong are still very safe cars in any era.

My favorite of the W126 range has to be 300SD. As much as I love the higher end 500 and 560 variants, there is just something about those 300SD that is just sheer motoring perfection. The interiors are just beautifully built, tight, and high quality as if you're in a cozy living room in a mansion. Paired to what is arguably one of the most indestructible engines out there along with transmissions that keep going. It's not uncommon to see these cars with millions of km's. Modern Mercedes can learn so many things from old school Mercedes.

I have a w124 and a w201, both drive and handle wonderfully. I had an electric car, and it broke down beyond repair (power electronics) but I'm glad i kept the old Mercedes diesel, it feels it can last forever, if adequate maintenance is provided. The suspension is wonderful, even by today standards. Modern electric steering is silly, while those older steering communicators with the driver, while turning effortlessly. Has powerful brakes with ABS and it works just fine.

I had one of these when I was living in Hong Kong. Paid the equivalent of about £2,000. Still one of the best cars I have ever owned. The build quality is off the charts and there aren’t many better places to be if you are sitting in a traffic jam in the tunnel from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island! Seriously tempted to look for another one now I’m back on the UK.

I had a 300TE-24 - The estate model. When it worked it was fantastic, but it had done 220,000 miles, and it would constantly break it very expensive and exciting ways. Even so I remember it fondly. Despite the mileage the interior was like new, and the engine was smooth and powerful. I liked the nice little touches, such as the central sun visor or the panel between seats and centre tunnel that prevented anything being dropped down there. I also liked the boot that was big enough to fit a fridge-freezer in.

My favourite car of all time, supremely comfortable, brilliant interior. 10 years on I had a second hand CE, preferred the TE, but the CE had the extra hear in the box which was the one thing missing from the TE.

These were built in the era when Mercedes cars weren't so much assembled, as hewn from solid metal. This era of Mercedes genuinely gives that impression, because the cars were built to outlast their owners. Some examples of the models from this era in the German home market have racked up, wait for it, over a million miles. Quite simply, they are rock solid. Look after them and they run forever.

The W124 is the car that in my experience is the closest thing to a Nokia phone if it was a car. Back in the mid 2000's, my dad bought a 1989 200E with the newer 220 engine in it. Once on a family road trip, the engine chipped a valve and was shaking really bad. My dad decided to limp the car as far as he could and somehow managed to drive it 200km home without any other engine issue. He realised that if he cruised at about 60km/h or higher the engine would smooth out as if nothing happened, albeit slightly down on power, running on only 3 cylinders an all. Till this day, I've never been in car that's as well put together and as indestructible feeling. I've been in newer luxury cars and nothing compares.

Had c124 coupe in mid 2000s until it was stolen and found after 3 years in a state, I refused to take it back. It was 2.3 manual, and I'd say, that engine was sufficient. It was still comfortable at 220kmh, and magically, it's 2.3 engine had less average fuel consumption than my 190E 1.8. Probably, the best car I've ever had, I can only imagine, how C320 or bigger-engined model drives... Now I'd steer away from KE-Jetronic models, no one is able to fix it's problems properly, at least in my region.

I loved the monowiper on my 2001 e320. It made no noise on the windscreen, unlike duals on almost any car I've had. The seal at the base is a bit of a pain to replace, and you need to put the proper grease on the sliding portion periodically.

My first car was thus a 2002 C320, 32L V6 naturally spirited engine. The thing is real quick and once I did Johannesburg to Durban via the N3 in two and half hours!! My second car was another C320. Overtakes everything on the road, absolutely reliable. You service the car you enjoy peace of mind. Currently I drive the W203 C270 CDI and a W204 C220 CDI. I am no longer that speed freak of yesteryear, but be warned don't try me on the road you shall see stars. Love your vids and am a Merc nut. Just a few points. 1. The w201 mercedes 190 was the first to have the 5 point multilink rear suspension. The same suspension arms were used on the w124 and w202. Right up to the w208 clk. 2. Same for the wiper. Though I think the SEC might have had that even earlier? Not sure. Again, the last to have it is the clk w208 I think.. 3. The engine in your car is a very special engine with a very interesting history. The m104.980 3 ltr 24 valve was a knee jerk reaction to bmw launching their 24 valve straight 6. Mercedes took the design from the 190e 2.3 Cosworth. Slapped two more cylinders in the middle and stuck it in the w124 and r129 sl. That's why it has a two step vvt and revs to 7.5k. They replaced it with the 3.2 straight 6 less that 2 years later that produced less power ( 217 against 240) but better low torque and rev limited to 6000 rpm . A more merc engine than the m104.980. 4. Try getting an ignition control unit for an m104.980! They were a limited run modified bosch unit for a v8. Siemens also made some. All were bought by mercedes. A new one is over 2000 quid and second hand ones are over 800. 5. Safety is not an issue if you are inside the car. For pedestrians or any car that hits you or you hit? Not so good. Keep doing the do fella. Great vids.

I've seen some Mercedes of this era in salvage yards that had taken some hard hits. The doors that would open, still opened like new. I absolutely agree, I had a 1992 MB 320TE everything spot on, equal or even better suited to meet today's requirements, except for the gadgets. A modern car has become a fast moving consumable. Use it, then throw it away. Depreciation creeping up from behind. Overengineered, too expensive to run, too heavy, too shiny, constantly beeping for mostly no reason, with useless performance in daily traffic. Planned obsolescence the well hidden quality. If it's broken, don't fix it. Won't find spares anyway and/or a mechanic able, willing and allowed to do it. If that carbon thing was really an issue, developments in the car industry (due to regulations) would have to be considered absolutely stupid. Very stupid, like trying to cool the kitchen by leaving the fridge door open.

Those things are solid and mostly repairable. The early 90's was the last time german automotive engineers got to design stuff with more consideration of functionality and durability than marketing wonk, overly empowered bean counters and tougher and tougher emissions/fuel consumption standards that are so far down the path of diminishing returns that the added cost/complexity has long since ceased to be significantly beneficial vs. the effect on reliability and durability. It's not just EV's that are becoming economic right off's for repairable but unaffordable problems at a relatively low mileage.
