Thank you for mentioning the Dollarhide system. I personally like it because I can figure out where in my tree that person is, and if they don't have a number then it may be that the person is a collateral relative of a collateral relative. But it is a very personalized system (because there is a home person, or home siblings). I actually don't think there is much of a learning curve, the rules are very simple. But yeah, if you are coming from another system it does take a bit of learning what it's about. One of the things like about the Dollarhide is I can see how far away that person is from our common ancestor. I like that I can acknowledge spouses (and multiple spouses) in my numbering. And if I want to make it more complicated then I can do the whole thing with where you can added another tree info (that is where Dollarhide can get complicated and has a learning curve and I personally don't use that extension but I do know about it. Okay, I am going to send this out because I love having a discussion on Dollarhide because so many people don't know about it, just like most people have not heard of the Mary Hill coloring system, which is how I learned and still use modified versions on.Anyway, if you want to have a discussion on Dollarhide I am game!

I have not every personally used the Dollarhide Numbering system. I was a modified Henry system guy for lots of years. I think you can use whatever works for you in your working papers. But when it comes time to publish you have to use either NGSQ or Register.

Doc, nice discussion of the big two numbering systems. I remember going to a negs regional conference in Hartford CY in the mid 80’s. I think it was Richard Eastman (?) who was the luncheon speaker. He said that if he had to do it all over again he would use the ngs system. There where a few boos ( of course)! I still remember that comment and heed it. Till tomorrow, stay safe! LDO Steve

I have wondered if anyone besides me still uses WordPerfect. Glad to hear I'm not alone. The only trees I've printed have been thru the program I use to store info which prints reports to TXT, RTF, HTML or PDF. I haven't had the need for anything "fancy." Thanks for the numbering explanation ... and especially for the pronounciation of Ahnentafel even though I probably won't remember. It's one of those "stumble" words like "Worcestershire."

I think the Word Perfect - Word debate is really a function of what you started with. I sometimes wish I had stared with Word Perfect.

@@JustGenealogy When I bought my first computer in 1984, Word was released just a yr before. The Word program didn't come bundled with any computer. Neither did WP which was released in 1979. When I first used Word, there were things it wouldn't do like add a cell if the value was 0 but there was something in it. WP looked at the same cell and saw anything not a number as having a vaue of 0. That made tables in Word difficult. That was fixed a long time ago. I like that I can "reveal codes" in WP & find why something doesn't look the way I thought it should. I had to use Word for a situation in 2011 which required page numbers. They were there & then they weren't. About 6 iterations later, they were back. I never figured out why. It wasn't anything I did.

You’re right that the Register issues are on the American Ancestors web site for members and are indexed.

I have a question about NGSQ numbering for generational destinations for families with multiple immigrants. I have my progenitor as Generation A. He never immigrated. His son, immigrated at the age of 35 with his wife and family. I have noted him as Generation a-1. His son was only 6 when they immigrated. I have noted him as Generation b-2. Here is my confusion and question...his son was born in America. Would his Generation be 2 or 3? I have referenced the book, Numbering Your Genealogy, (Curran, Crane, Wray) and they suggest the superscript 2. Here is my example: Franz “Francis” Joseph² Eder (Makareusᵇ᠆² , Johann Adamᵅ᠆¹, Casperᴬ). Is this correct?

It would be generation 2, as the first non-immigrating child of an immigrating child who came with the immigrant parent. Confusing isn't it? Make a list of this line and put the word immigrant or non-immigrant and then the relationship path. So I assume Franz (2) is the child born here, Makareus (b-2) is the 6 year old immigrant who came with the immigrant Adam (a-1), who is the son of Casper (A) who did not immigrate. If I have the relationships right, it appears that you do also.

@@JustGenealogy Thank you! That is exactly the order/relationships I have! Franz was the first non-immigrating child. This was most helpful. Your expertise was much appreciated!
