Are you new to wet feltmaking and looking for a comprehensive step by step nuno felting tutorial to help you achieve successful results, right from the start? Follow along with me as I guide you through the whole process from start to finish and be amazed at the beautiful felt you will be able to create!
Please note that this is not a short video because I wanted to share each stage with you and make a demonstration nuno felt scarf from start to finish. I intend uploading a much condensed video of the tutorial once it’s edited but this one is for those of you who would like ALL the details, tips and advice!
For your reference my finished scarf weighs just 65g (2.3oz) but if I had felted a long rather than a square shape I might have needed a little more fibre. Have fun!
PS If you would like to create felt to eco print rather than use coloured wool and embellishing fibres I recommend natural un-dyed merino and cellulose embellishments (not silk).
My aim is to cultivate a sustainable, nature focused practice helping creatives and slow living enthusiasts feel connected, understood and supported. Since 2029 I've had multiple wet felting and eco printing workshop success stories in Ireland, North America, Australia and mainland Europe.

Thank you for sharing this very comprehensive and instructional video. Although I have wet and nuno felted before your clear and down to earth approach is very refershing and relaxing. I have always used long fibre merino which I find challenging and so I've been inspired to buy some short fibre merino. (I actually found a UK seller too) I can't wait to try it out. Very impressed by what you produced with a heavier weight silk. And how you are so calm throughout ( i have a tendency to panic when things are going the way I want them too )

You're so welcome Jeanie, I'm delighted that you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. As well as technique, my intent was to share that nuno felting is a time consuming but rewarding process. I honestly think that without seeing everything in real time it's difficult to understand how long it actually takes! In relation to panicking when things don't go to plan, almost nothing is impossible to rectify but I also think that we can be very hard on ourselves. I've a simple felt bead tutorial and when I have a disaster in the studio, we all do at times, I cut the felt up and make some beads! Here's the link for you in case you haven't seen it already. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bdGHiqRhmMDclXk.html

Dear Nicola! How awesome of you to provide this tutorial from beginning to end. I am NOT a novice felter, but I always find it so interesting to see how others do it. And I've learned from each instructor new ways of approaching a project. What I find so fascinating is that there are probably as many ways to accomplish nuno felting as there are felters; NO way is right or wrong. They ALL work! It took me a long time to understand this, at first finding all the info on the subject so confusing. Thank you for adding to my knowledge!
@clasheen

Dear Louise, you are so correct. There are many, many different ways to arrive at the same outcome when felting and I think half the fun is identifying which ways we prefer ourselves!!! None are 'wrong' but some are definitely easier than others!

Thanks so much for your feedback! I was a little concerned that people might find the video too long winded but without seeing the complete process in real time from start to finish it’s not so easy to understand how long it actually takes. Now you know how long a small scarf takes just scale it up for a bigger project.

Nicola, I have only recently discovered your videos and have watched quite a few and simply love your style and process! I currently 2D needle felt and have wet felted before, but haven't nuno felted before, so I have been watching all the vids I can, which is how I came upon your KZfaq channel. I agree with your "simple" technique especially for someone like me who hasn't nuno felted before...no need to overwhelm! LOL What I was encouraged by was that you used wool batt. I have been encouraged to only use tops and seeing you use yours, while thinning it out, really showed me that you could in fact use the batt (I have more batt than tops in my stash) and not JUST tops! Your finished product was beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing!
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 жыл бұрын
You’re so welcome Felicia and I hope that you will now try nuno felting for yourself! Batts are so beautiful to work with. I don’t always demonstrate with them because many people have easier access to tops/roving but batts are definitely my favourite. Peeling them into thinner layers and strips leads to better quality felt rather than laying out thick chunks. Have fun!

Thank you Nicola, this was wonderful to watch the full process of nuno felting. It’s such a creatively process and the end product is so lightweight and warm, not to mention, colorful and texturized. A friend and I nuno felted a smaller silk scarf yesterday, using wool and silk embellishments. It merged together very well. I’m wondering if the protein fibers, wool and silk may blend together better rather than protein and cellulose( linen)? It’s all about experimenting to see what works… I love watching your videos, so thanks once again. Christine in Australia 🌼
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Christine, it's nice to think of you and your friend nuno felting together yesterday and enjoying your results and the process! You can use any fabric that you like but silk and cotton gauze are my personal favourites. Silk gives more texture and cotton a flatter surface but many fabrics will work. If you choose linen just be sure it's a light weave, the same with any cellulose fabric. An open weave like gauze or cheesecloth works beautifully but the heavier the fabric and closer the weave the clumpier and heavy your finished nuno felt will be.

Would it have helped the linen accent fiber attach if you had added a very thin layer of the purple fiber over top prior to the rolling and felting process? Not enough to hide the linen, more a light haze perhaps with more of the "holes" like the initial layer of purple to let parts of the strands show through.

Halfway watching this beautiful tutorial..Question for you is if it is possible to felt through satin ore chiffon silk made from polyester? For me it would be a cheaper way to practise before i go for the real and better materials.
@clasheen
@clasheen 7 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Just take your time and you will be able to felt through polyester but I would advise you to choose a lightweight fabric. The biggest difference is that it won't feel nice, it will feel a lot stiffer after you have felted it and it may also be a little more difficult to work with. Not impossible though so have fun and give it a try!

This is a great video. If I lay the wool about 2 inches away from the edge will I get a ruffle effect?
@clasheen
@clasheen 2 жыл бұрын
Yes although I'd only do so up to about three quarters of an inch! For the nicest wider ruffle I'd fold the silk back a few inches and then trap the outer edge with wool. Basically the wool needs to migrate through two layers of fabric when doing this. This will give you a nicer ruffle than laying out your wool 2" from the edge and gives a beautiful finish.

Wow, thank you for your information. Do you use real silk for the base scarf or can it be a synthetic fabric
@clasheen
@clasheen Жыл бұрын
Yes Jan, you nuno felt using a synthetic fabric but the results will be a lot stiffer and less pleasing to the touch than when you use silk. With nuno felting, the biggest ‘expense’ is your time, not your materials so if you are spending quite a bit of time making something I think it pays to make sure it feels and looks beautiful too! Does this make sense? On the other hand, if you wanted to nuno felt a wall hanging rather than a scarf using various different weights of synthetic fabric would lead to very interesting surface texture
