There are anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists, but did you know anesthesiologist assistants are also a thing? Well, neither did I until just recently.
In this video, I speak with Chabely, an anesthesiologist assistant, and talk to her about her reasons for becoming one, her path to do so, and we also dive really deep into her finances.

I watched this pod sporadically throughout the day - my original plan becoming an RN was to go CRNA, but I couldn’t handle working ICU so I went the NP route. Kind of wish now I went the AA route, since I could’ve done it at my alma mater where she also did hers… 4 months from graduating FNP school and the market in south florida is so saturated NPs are taking jobs at $80-90k. I’m gonna have to specialize if I wanna make any real $. Too late now 😅 It’s crazy the differences in pay across medical professions.

I am torn between CAA and CRNA, why? - CRNA schools are widely available - CRNA can practice in all states (& in some INDEPENDENTLY) - Can work all over the states -CAA requirements are "easier" compared to that of CRNA -CAA schools and work opportunities are limited to certain states - Patients prefer CRNAs - Management/corporate prefer CRNAs (low cost and more revenue since CRNAs don't need supervision). I want to make a choice I don't regret later

I'm not sure if your already a nurse or not or a student but I'm not gonna lie I'd recommend CAA. Simply because the school and wait time to become a CAA is much shorter and a little less competitive. Your making alot of money already in your first year and if u honestly wanted to still be a nurse or a CRNA you have a higher up already being a CAA on getting into those competitive fields and you'll be able to easily pay off your student loans if u wish since your making like 200k a year. Basically what I'm tryna say is because it's so short and your making so much money you can save up and always change your position and go back to school for another position u desire. While having a higher up because your a CAA.
@striderstorm
@striderstorm Ай бұрын
I would not say the CAA route is easier but rather, shorter. Especially if you already have a bachelor’s degree that is not in Nursing. You just need your pre-med course requirements for coursework. Also, ICU experience is not needed to apply to CAA school, so that cuts out another year or two.

Are you from or plan to live in a state that CAA can work in? I remember when I was researching it, I would have definitely done CAA but the issue was that they are not allowed to work in the state I am from, and also not in the only other state I would want to live in... so the decision was out of my hands in that regard. Also, the independent aspect you mentioned was a big deal for me too.

This isn’t a “CRNA vs CAA” debate. This is an information session to let people know about an option in the medical field that may be suitable for them. We have AA’s at my hospital in Canada. I’m surprised you have never heard of them. I truly enjoy watching your videos, But please remember, like you said, a lot of nurses are living pay cheque to pay cheque, therefore, giving advise to other nurses how they can make sooo much money and that they should charge people sooo much money is something you really have to consider what your saying. Don’t we want to HELP others. I’m not saying do it for free, but you keep going on about charging soooo much money. Let’s remember ‘the why’. I’m always hearing how people want to help people, but how are they helping if the ones they try to help can’t afford their help. Just saying…please see this as constructive criticism and not as a hater. 🙏🏾

Are you still promoting nursing or another profession. AAs are not nurses nor do they require nursing background or any prior clinical experience for admission. Critical thinking skills, titration of vasoactive drugs, invasive monitoring, and familiarity with the cardiopulmonary system in decompensated state in real time are vastly learned in the intensive care unit. ICU experience is paramount for all CRNA schools. Let alone handling of difficult communication and ethical situations during one’s most vulnerable moments. There is no shortcut. If you’re a nurse interested in anesthesia please consider a nurse anesthesia program for the legacy of the profession.
@NursesToRiches

Why hate on other professions? I never said AAs are nurses and I'm also not going to gatekeep other career paths. Chabely said that she would have gone into nursing if she found our KZfaq channel earlier on in her decision to go into a career in healthcare but she doesn't regret her decision at all. There are many people out there who just aren't cut out to be nurses. Becoming an AA is an alternative option for those people and if someone wants to pursue that career path instead of nursing, more power to them.

@@NursesToRiches thank you! There are many CAAs that have medical backgrounds. I’m an RRT and the only reason I’m not taking that route is because I plan to live in California long term. @striderstorm
@striderstorm Ай бұрын
There are literally thousands of CAAs practicing, and there is no statistical data showing the patient outcomes are any different between a CRNA and CAA when practicing in an Anesthesia Care Team Model. The AA route is not so much a shortcut, just a different route. “Legacy” of a profession should have little impact on whether or not a person chooses that path as their profession.
