The rapid adoption of electronic health records around the nation has certainly galvanized the interest in informatics. More importantly, it has created a large demand for individuals that are equipped to be a liason between the clinical and technical domains in healthcare.
In today's video, I'll be interviewing an Epic Pharmacy Informatics Consultant on various topics to shed some light on this unique career path.

This is definitely my dream job. I find myself doing pretty good at computer, documentation or hospital system as I used to be an auditor. Do you have any recommendation for new grads without much experience in the field? Should I start as bedside nurse first?
@briankfung
@briankfung 3 жыл бұрын
My biggest advice to anyone, especially new grads, when entering the field of informatics - is to gain practice experience whenever possible. As an informaticist of any kind, you're typically designing tools for that specific practice. Thus, those who have had experience practicing (e.g. as a bedside nurse), would be the most ideal individuals to go into these fields. I'd strongly suggest starting as a bedside nurse for sure! Good luck!

Thank you for this very informative and concise video on Nursing Informatics. I have been and RN for around 20 years. I started of with 3 years as a staff nurse in Nuero/Nuero-surgery floor. I have been in Cardiac Rehab for 17 years. I have a BS in exercise science and an ADN. I would like to get into Nursing Informatics but do not having the time nor the extra funds for a Master's degree. How can a person get a start in informatics without tons of schooling. What is the most recommended certificate to get that would allow me to start in this field?
@briankfung
@briankfung 5 ай бұрын
This is a great question - and I'm not sure there is any right answer. I've always personally suggested exploring free resources as a start to get a sense of whether it's something you're interested in before diving deeper. Further, it's also a good way to learn about the content without too much financial investment. These free resources take the form of online education like massive open online courses (MOOCs) like Coursera. Hopkins has quite a few courses you can audit there. Lots of certificate programs as well from various universities. One in particular that you may be interested in is the one from AMIA called AHIC.

Enjoyed this video! Do you have any suggestions how to get experience in information system to break in the field whether it’s entry level positions or volunteer experience ? Thanks :)
@briankfung
@briankfung 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Tonie! I think for both volunteer and entry level positions, it’s simply a matter of directly reaching out to individuals for opportunities. For volunteering purposes, there is always a lot of informatics work that needs to be done - starting with your own orgs informatics department may be a good first step - even for potential internship/entry level positions. I know a lot of my nursing informatics colleagues take on students for their rotations as well, so going through your nearby nursing school may be an option as well. Lastly, I’m not as familiar with the various nursing orgs, but pharmacy has many opportunities to jump into volunteering/project type roles for informatics. I know AMIA has some opportunities as well and has a nursing informatics workgroup. With that said, let me also ask some of my nursing informatics colleagues! Let me know if you have more questions and I can send it their way!

If I am an LVN and have a BA in child development, is there a direct program for a Masters Program?
@briankfung

I’m actually not sure. There are likely different requirements for each masters program and you’ll have to review the programs you’re interested in to see if you meet them. Good luck!
@numinous2506
@numinous2506 Жыл бұрын
You need to be an RN, but you could get that with an ADA and your BA would probably qualify you to take a certification course to be a CNI. Try to contact American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and ask them or a student advisor at a university that has BSN programs. I have an LPN and no bachelor's degree. So I have to get my BSN to qualify to take the certification course for CNI. I saw on Indeed that nurses with 11+ years of experience that have a CNI can make more than new nurse practitioners. They are among the highest paid nurses with the least requirement for advanced degree like Master or higher. I'm really glad I discovered it because bedside nursing care for the last 15 years has broken my body and is working on my spirit. Good luck!

Can you do Nursing Informatics as a brand new RN?
@briankfung
@briankfung 5 жыл бұрын
I would think you can, but it seems rare. All of the nursing informatics folks have either a few years of experience, sometimes informal informatics experience helping out with various projects, or they have a masters in informatics. There’s always the chance of right time right place and you can get hired though. I’d chat with your local informatics nurses to see what minimum requirements they have as it can depend on your organization too

I am sorry but I still don't understand what exactly do they do in the nursing field. Yes Florence Nightingale did some research such as keeping data of patient living and dying in the hospital and to control the spread of disease and to also improve the work load but sometimes it falls down into public nursing/infection control nurse. Public Nurse keeps data and statistics do and also public teaching of cleanliness. It is fairly new but it's not really specific on what exactly do they really do. ADPIE?? He just changed the words but it's the same thing.? I just do not know what it is at all about. How is this profession going to fill in the gap of nursing shortage? How is it going to be improved nurse patient ratio? How is going to tackle and improved and control the spread of infection? How does it improved the moral of nurses who are subjected to abuse and harassment from family members or management? Honestly bedside nursing is very frown upon. Nobody like it at all because it's difficult stressful and exhausting. Nursing is becoming so saturated now days. Everyone just becomes a nurse because of the job security and different specialty in nursing. It has more doors but it also diminishes it's value because it's moving away from nursing. It's based on nursing concept but it's not really anymore because hands on care is no longer present. Not to be disrespectful I just don't know what it is and I don't know how it can impact or improved nursing shortage. The only thing it is going to impact is job wise. It just opens a different to nursing when it's not exactly nursing because you are not really taking care of a patient. That is all I am seeing from this profession. I guess I am just conservative and old school like that. I am not discouraging any one and I think it's a good job.
@briankfung
@briankfung 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Neil. These are great points you bring up and there are certainly no shortage of issues within the world of healthcare. To be fair, I don't think nursing informatics can fix the problems you are describing as those problems transcends a specialty field. Granted, information technology as a whole, is supposed to enhance patient care by freeing up clinicians to do the things that matter more vs. spending time on administrative tasks. E.g. Reduction of clicks, alerts to remind clinicians of best practices, alerts to prevent issues, automation of redundant tasks, etc. From a utility perspective, informatics - be it nursing, pharmacy, or physician - is absolutely needed in this day in age when technology is so pervasive in our healthcare environments. The things should be designed and built by clinicians. Otherwise, non-clinical people building the tools we use on a day to day basis will very likely make workflows more difficult, increase costs, and likely make patient care worse. Nursing informatics isn't for everyone, but it certainly is very much needed in this day and age.

I thought the same thing, I'm looking through the comments like Ok....But exactly what do they do?!He said "a mountain of emails" "EHR" "Adpie" "finding what the problem is, and coming up with a solution", okay What is the problem though? What is he exactly facing to understand what and how he comes up with the solution?

@briankfung
@briankfung 2 жыл бұрын
@@robertdepesci3418 That's a very fair point. I actually did my MPH capstone last year on how HIT and EHRs contributes to clinician burnout. Personally, I got into informatics to help combat these issues. You'd think that the individuals that practice would be able to help guide the design and build, but, there's always challenges. Unfortunately, I think the gap is still quite large and those of us on the informatics side have a LONG way to go before the workflows in EHRs are more user friendly. Sorry to hear that though - hopefully future updates will be improved vs. get worse.
