The male nurse I had when I was mistakenly told at 16 by a male doctor that I would need a hysterectomy was the kindest, most comforting person I could have asked for. The male nurse was the one who got me psych support and a second opinion and moved me to a different ward after the doctor was torn a new one for misdiagnosing me without my parents present. My male nurse was the one who held me together when my world was falling apart. He was the one who kept me safe.

One of the best nurses that have taken care of me while hospitalized was a male nurse. It was when I was in ICU I was intubated at that time and he always knew what I needed just by my facial expressions. This was during Covid so no visitors including my parents and who are my caregivers. He knew I missed them and was scared so he would call them every time he was my nurse put it on speaker so I could hear them. He would tell them about my progress and that I missed and loved them. He literally made one of the worst times in my life more bearable and gave me hope. ❤❤❤

@@ahhwe-any7434 I just saw your reply for the first time today. It seems to me that, if pay generally is or should be a reflection of the value of one's service, then the population shifts resulting from the baby boomers retiring means that everyone has an ethical obligation to be seeking to fill the societal need that provides society with the most value. In other words, all Americans should be looking for the highest paying job they're competent to fill regardless of what their current job is paying. That's "always" been true of everyone making less than 250% of federal poverty level, but now I wonder if that income caveat still applies.

I'm a female ED doc. Please tell your Dad from me that I am incredibly grateful for nurses, especially male ones. People remember that female patients might only want a female around them for certain conditions, but forget that men can feel embarrassed and have "delicate situations", too, where they are far more comfortable with a male - and a lot of those situations fall into a nurse's area of expertise, like wound care, for example. A lot of my older male patients, who come from a time where only their wife would go near them "down there", get incredibly embarrassed if a female has to catheterise them, for example. Seeing the relief on their faces when a male nurse offers to help out is a beautiful thing. It gives them the dignity they deserve. Your father is one of the people providing that, which is worth far more than any sneer. Male nurses taught me an insane amount when I was a junior, they have made me feel safe around more volatile patients, they tend to have an amazing sense of humour and the team would just feel wrong without them. My father-in-law was a male nurse, so I understand the shit they get, but it's uncalled for. Please thank your dad for me for his awesome work and dedication 😎👍

My best, most caring and most qualified nurse was a male nurse when I was in ICU FOR 9 DAYS - he was young, which told me he was still a new enough grad to still care - he was the only one who turned (repositioned) me with pillows and actually fed me my breakfast BY HAND, talked to me like I understood, (which I did all along) and did not treat me like I was a stupid inconvenience to his day, look at me with contempt, or sadisticly stick me with 20/18 gauge needles when my IV became infiltrated TWENTY TIMES - yes, I counted. The nurses were all white, and I'm a VERY light-skinned black woman who was in my 50's at the time, and one of these "nurses" made an attempt to comb my then badly tangled hair, and actually remarked, "What kind of hair is this?!!" Insult to injury. That one good nurse was the ONLY thing that kept me from writing the other nurses up to administration, the doctors, and anyone else who would listen, despite the fact that they saved my life, albeit begrudgingly, knowing their jobs were on the line. 🙄😤😡BTW, I WAS A FORMER RN, BSN, WITH 17 YEARS EXPERIENCE UNDER MY BELT AND NEVER TREATED A PATIENT THE WAY THE REST OF THOSE NURSES TREATED ME. Met my first male RN in 1974 after I broke my leg skiing. He was not only caring, but he was super cool and laid back. My family was all out enjoying the slopes all week, but he read to me and played games with me. He really made my week so much better than just lying in a bed!❤

The advantage is that many of the men who push past the stigma will be the best for the job. Gotta find that sweet spot. Sadly i think social norms twist the beneficial characteristics in many men. Creating the feminine role.

@@lizcollinson2692 Oh, I've worked with a number of wonderful men. Of the three men I recall in my graduating class from nursing school, one loved the heart and wanted to work on a medical unit that doubled as a cardiac step-down, one loved geriatrics, and the third wanted to possibly do something in occupational health and safety (he had previously been a roofer). When I took students to a medical unit for practicum, there was an OUTSTANDING nurse who was a man. He was very helpful to my students and was fantastic at his job.

The majority of nurses that I have seen in my life are male. And I have a chronic health condition so I get sick more than most. So I see a lot of male nurses. And I love them so much. They have all been so incredible to me.

I've had the same experience. I had cervical cancer and it ruined my immune system. Every once in awhile my body just attacks itself and I get a ride to the ER. I go to a local ER clinic and they are always so kind and empathic. I don't even have to beg for help, they always just help me with the pain and fear. I'm always very worried that THIS TIME, the pain won't go away and I will die screaming...luckily, with the help of a tenz unit, I've been doing ok...thank you, staff at the Alamo Heights Emergency room, we really appreciate your time and help!

i work w/ a male cna. in short, i think hes only good at saving face. i mean i guess hes good at being a dude... and always accepts more cred than what he doesnt do. i think he knows what hes doing for the most part and other stuff. but in the same sense, i still think hes lazy & half ass. & tries to make himself appear as if things run smoothly when hes around. bc his flirting skills is on pt.... so, also just no. alotta females dont even want him touching them. not that i think hes predatorial. its just him: its just in the way u approach ppl ... some ppl: walking around with hineys out for a good while :/ some poor elderly ladies: vulnerability & paranoia. also older ladies not in their right minds: dont mind if i do strip. 😅 as a female, i gotta tell all my elders, no. no. you gotta keep yalls gems covered. also the way he proccesses male aggression isnt really the most bright.

I mean, that has actually been how things used to work, once at a time. As in, when my grandpa (retired pediatrician) did his clinicals, there were no male nurses around. There were men whose job was called the male equivalent of a female nurse today - in German, a female nurse is a "Krankenschwester" ("Sick Sister"), and a male one is a "Krankenpfleger" ("Sick Carer" - notice how it's more gender neutral) - but they mainly did the lifting and transporting and stuff, nothing that really required formal training. So yeah, that was a whole thing.
