Haha. This sounds kind of like a justification session to me. I can relate! I'm old. There are things I've wanted since I was 10 years old but couldn't afford unless I found an exceptional deal, which happens occasionally. For example, in 1975 I saw one of my grad-school advisors using a Montblanc 149 piston-fill fountain pen. I've craved one ever since. A week or so ago I was at an antique show and found a little old man selling his pen collection. Lo and behold, he had an original, new-in-box 1983-era 149, complete with original sales receipt and Montblanc paperwork. It was less than a quarter of the price of a brand-new one, so I bought it. That's the way it's gone for me--wait up to 45 years or so, and I eventually get what I've desired. Same for archery equipment and all the other tangible things I enjoy. I've always wanted an old Gibson ES-347 B.B. King model guitar, and the other day I found one in nearly new condition. "All good things come to those who wait" and, "He who hesitates is lost." Those are my mottos. Happy "hunting". ;-)

I would be hella curious what's flea market you go to. I never find anything good over here. The best I found was a French Revolutionary rapiar in need of some severe loving. Not my style of sword though so i'll let somebody else get it. My girlfriend always seems to find the dolls she wants to customize though. And my daughter saw her first landline phone had no clue what it was and didn't believe me when I told her it was a phone she's seven LOL.

How did I justify buying my 9 bows? I dont. I like archery, I do archery and I want to use different bows depending on what I feel I want to shoot. I dont feel like I need to justify it because I just do what I like.

Your partner must be so happy with that. If you're single and have plenty of time then of course there's no reason not to buy something. If you run a household with another person, however, you might be asked to justify yet another 200 Moneys expense, instead of just buying what you feel like when you feel like it.

Good video, I appreciate the older bows, the classics, and my collection of bows has gradually increased over the years, and with a limited budget I may come across one at a yard sale or even a pawn shop or some arrows or a quiver. I enjoy shooting each one and again, I appreciate the vintage bows and their feel when shooting and their history. My wife is not as much in appreciation as I am to say the least, so I try to temper my finds. I am familiar with hearing..."You don't need another bow" or "your hobby is getting more expensive". I explain that 'need' is subjective...which doesn't really help.
@MrIanfurniss
@MrIanfurniss 5 жыл бұрын
The simple answer, you gave at the start of the video when you said "I've had so much fun using this bow". The longer, more complicated answer, is best explained if you read To Have or To Be by Erich Fromm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Have_or_to_Be%3F . As such, the short version of the longer answer is that there are two reasons to buy. If you focus on 'Having' then you'll never be truly happy, only happy for short periods until the novelty wears off and you go out to buy again, and get that buzz. If you focus on 'Being', then you don't need to buy things to be happy, you'll be happy 'just being' an archer. That way you'll only buy things when you need them or want to expand yourself in some way i:e buying a Korean bow because you want to expand your knowledge and understanding of a different style. I don't always manage to be perfect myself of course, but, I have X10's for competition but stopped practicing with them for the reasons you mention. I'd rather break ACC's during practice. There's just no reason to spend money on X10's when the ACC's will do the job. Focus on being the archer you want to be, not buying the gear that makes you think you are.

I do a cost/benefit analysis with other factors like chance that I will actually use the equipment, and how happy it will make me. After shooting for a year, I amassed 6 bows already, not counting the two that I ordered this morning specifically for strength training. Every bow was acquired for a purpose practical for archery development, and none of them are just “fun bows.” I usually get a new bow to progress in draw weight or maybe a takedown to travel with. I have a $60 30# Snake recurve as my first main bow, then a 38# premium Chinese bow when I increased draw weight, then a 40# takedown for travel, and another 45# premium Chinese bow to advance in draw weight, then a 50# bow to increase in draw weight. The other two were acquired cheaply and for bad reasons. Learned my lesson. I really want a yumi, a Sung Mu Gung, a lefty Hoyt Satori, etc, but I really don’t need them, so I never purchased them. Perhaps when I’m more financially stable.

I'd just like to add a more general comment to my earlier one about my having to wait, sometimes for 45 or 50 years, to find an acceptable deal on something I've always wanted. I'm 70 now, and looking back, I realize that by far my most important purchase has been my house. As a result of working hard, getting an education and keeping decent professional jobs, I was able to make this investment. There were a lot (LOT) of sacrifices to get to this point, however as a result, I don't have to go to a club (or anywhere else) to do the things I love. I'm going out in my backyard right now and shoot a bunch of arrows from my Nomad Warriors horse bow on my 30 yard range back there. So, young people, get yourself an education in a marketable profession with benefits; and then, if there's any way possible, get yourself a house. I can't emphasize this enough. Whatever sacrifices you have to make, it is well worth it.

Great subject, thanks. I've been a "casual" Archer since the age of 12, (now 55), and because weeks, even months could be between sessions, I tend not to go for the top end of town in price. I have been thinking lately though, of slowly building a Olympic style recurve to complement my hunting CB.

Gonna get into some club beginner program and if it feels like something I want to continue doing (I've spent hundreds of hours doing research online about archery already so I doubt I'll change my mind) and I feel like I'd rather just buy a high end riser right off the bat, but start with cheaper limbs as I need to build up strength and endurance for higher draw weight before I buy high end limbs. Also get a proper form first. It's just a pain that there are no local archery shops in Finland that sell the gear I want so I'm pretty much forced to get stuff shipped from U.S and wooow the shipping is going to cost a lot and the taxes man oh man the taxes, for fuck sake it's like buying one riser for the price of two. Don't have a job either since I'm a full-time student, so it's soul crushing to spend my savings but I don't want to just sit idle and waste years of my life doing nothing because I can't afford having a hobby. I have mental illness problems since I don't have anything to enjoy in life, so my excuse for spending a fortune on archery equipment is that honestly my life is on the line here. I already don't have a reason to wake up in the morning beyond just wishful hopes that in a couple years I can finally have fun for the first time in two decades.

My suggestion is, if you ever want to do archery but the price intimidates you or you think the fantasy is better than reality just come for a session or two. It's really fun and if you are not into it you just spent a normal activity money one time just like going to have lunch in a restaurant, but trust me on this it's worth it.

So for me when I took archery back up last year it was partially because I was needing something to keep myself away from booze and have remained sober and a big part of that has been thinking about all the money I wasted on being drunk that could have been spent on archery. So whenever Im buying gear I always just say " better than going on a bender". Really its just one addiction to another one but this ones a little healthier.

I started by buying an inexpensive bow in the style I wanted, in the weight I wanted to shoot. Turns out it's a little much to train form. I'm saving for a lighter bow in a similar style and arrows to match. When I can reach a level of consistency I'm happy with in both weights. I think it's fair to say I've earned the laminated bow I really want. That's a toss up between a Mariner, Toth, or Grozer. After that, I don't see myself buying another for a long time.

Why not go straight to what you actually want skip the middleman and if you need do a little strenght training at the local gym to be able to hit the weight you want. Course you could sell the others when your done with them but hell im poor so the least i can spend i do whatever to make it work.

I guess I'm like you. Something changes in my shooting and my equipment needs to catch up to the change. My equipment is nothing more than a couple bows, arrows that I make, a minimal arrow making kit and a mixture of purchased and home-made targets. Due to an injury, I'm a right handed shooter now....for a year, maybe. Perfect time to try a different style. Ergo, new bow. I could use your thoughts on that, actually.

I am on the fence about lowering my draw weight. I have a 1 piece bow at 50#. I've shot it for 10 years with good form but when I recently started to take it hunting the additional stress and adrenaline cause me to botch it up every time. I want to hunt traditional with a recurve so I think it may be time for a slightly lesser poundage.. which means a new bow!

Great breakdown on your thought process. One tip on how not to break arrows I ever got is to shoot no more than 3 arrows at once. This way you make the most out of every arrow. You concentrate better, and you are not rushing it. Your form, and accuracy will increase faster. As for my purchases, I only buy what I need at that moment. I don't splurge a lot. But if you love something, and feel good from doing it, than that's justification enough for me.

I'm new to archery and already have 3 bows, ok, the 4th one hasn't been shipped yet. A Bear Titan in case the neighbors want to try my backyard range, a Spyder T/D recurve for 3D archery, a Black Hunter with long bow limbs and (soon to be shipped) a Core Air riser w/ ILF limbs - well just because. I know, I'm like a dog that sees a squirrel (oh! look at that Ben Bearson recurve on ebay!) What helps to slow my buying is to turn off KZfaq and go shoot with the bows I now have. It's not just archery equipment, it's a "problem" of the 21st century where you don't have to get dressed and drive to a store but digitally shop with a simple click or tap.

I still can't choose between 56" hunting recurve bow or 66" target recurve bow. 66" is preferable due to my draw length, but 56" is more compact. Which is better in ur opinion Sensei? I really like Gold Tip and Easton arrows but I buy the "Blemished" they were almost half price. I don't care about the finish on my arrows. I am minimalist with shoes and many other things. I have 6 pairs of boots. I have one pair of shoes and sneakers which I may have worn 3 times in 10 years. I do buy on impulse sometimes, so I try not to carry much cash when I go to events... hunting exposes or gun shows. I have known many women who have quite a collection of shoes, when asked about why they have so many they get angry and get told I 'm a man and wouldn't understand. Its my money, I worked for it.
