I love how the Emperor named his flagship after Alexander the Great's personal war horse, Bucephelus. It fits perfectly. I've always seen more inspiration from Alexander in the Emperor than any other leader in human history.

Scale is always difficult, but the Speranza is definitely continent sized in Lore and the Phalanx is moonsized. Our moon has a radius of 1700 kilometres. So it's really, really BiG!

I would say the average would be about 1000km in size, give or take between 800 and 1200km. If you consider a moon being something that is not a captured asteroid and has accumulated it's own mass over time.

It's bigger than a Blackstone fortress in the games and they are also pretty damn big, let's say about half the size of the continental united states.

@@DeathBYDesign666Yeah, in the 2nd Gathering Storm book, it describes a Blackstone Fortress as having an internal chamber that was over 100 miles in diameter, meaning that the top pyramid of the thing alone was at least somewhat larger than that. And considering that the Phalanx managed to cripple a Blackstone Fortress with just a fraction of its main weapons (due to being invaded by a shitload of daemons) during the Fall of Cadia, it makes sense that it would be of comparable size to have the weaponry and power generation abilities required to accomplish such a feat. It's also stated that the Phalanx has entire isolated climates with unique forms of life existing within its hangar bays, as well as the Imperial Fists symbol at the top spire if the structure alone being described as "larger than most Imperial spacecraft". If you assume that this is anything smaller than grand cruisers or battleships (say an average 5km cruiser), it puts things into perspective real fast. Someone on Reddit did the math and measured the symbol to be about 67.7 times smaller than the Phalanx model as seen in BFGA 2, which gives us a figure of 338.5 km in size if we use a cruiser figure for the symbol. If we use an average battleship figure (roundabout 8km) we get a figure of 541.6 km in size, which I think makes sense as a smaller reasonable range for the "small-moon-sized" description, since 500km across is the minimum size that a celestial object needs to be in order to naturally form into a sphere. I just found it to be a nice parallel. However, of you want to go even further beyond, if we assume the symbol is the size of the higher-end of battleships (plus Crusade and Heresy era ships were generally larger and more advanced) at about 12 km, then you would get a figure of 812.4 km. And, for a little bit of wish fulfillment, if we put a figure of 20km for the symbol (the average size of a standard Gloriana), we would get a figure of 1354 kilometers in size.

It's a common misconception that the Legions received only one Gloriana, the Dark Angels for example had I think 3, the Alpha Legion had 2, one for both Alpharius and Omegon and some other legions got more than one. It's one of the biggest holes in the lore that so many of them are never mentioned again, these ships were powerful enough to destroy entire fleets on their own without much effort, you think we'd have heard some lore about them..

I think maybe the vagueness and lore errors are the general idea. The Heresy was 10,000 years before the current time period. What do we know about life on earth in 8000 BCE? It was probably cold and there was not Internet. Possibly the only way you’d know that there even were Glorianas back in the heresy is because some survive, an actual artifact, but how it came to survive is probably lost to the sands of time and it might not even have its original name. Warships in the 20th century sometimes had 2 or 3 names when they were sold from Navy to navy, The Imperial data from those times is basically so fragmentary as to be in the realms of digital archaeology. @Batman_the_bad_man 10 ай бұрын
@Oliver-qz4kf that's a good question, but it is important to look at how the mechanicus works and how it sees technology. Because the tech-priests actually don't understand how tech works (it sounds strange, I know). How they actually build stuff is by following a highly ritualised process which includes all the necessary steps to build a machine and a lot of little rituals that they believe to be as important as the actual process of build their ships and weapons and other things. So even if they were to dismantle a weapon, they could not recreate it because from their perspective, the knowledge of how to build/assemble this weapon has been lost. It shows in what state of regression the empire is in, it's like the Greeks sitting next to stone structures and using them after the bronze age collapse, but having lost the knowledge of how to build with stone. The empire has a lot more advanced tech than they have understanding of. It's really quite tragic.

I wonder how these ships would compare to endgame Stellaris ships and even the Gigastructures mod's ships. The Stellarborne tech would be stuff which can probably surpass many of the things the War In Heaven era had. Weaponized Quasar beams which will damage hyperdimensional structures of the Blokkats are no jokes. Even to the Necrons this would be insane.

The thing is that even DAoT had weapons that would not be able to be put into Stellaris because of game-play mechanics. For example, a DAoT energy core was collapsing all of reality into itself and if it imploded then all of existence would come to an end. Yeah, I don't even know how you would code that into stellaris, if at all.

@@wewuzkangz2505 What is this thing that you speak of? I never heard about this "engery core" nor the circumstances and conditions surrounding it. Not even when I did search up Dark Age Technology lore indepthly did I hear anything about this. So I don't know what it is nor the context surrounding it's development if it is indeed a real concept and constructed tool or it's utilization and purposes and actual feats. Stellaris does have something similar in function to that already called the Aetherophasic Engine which the consequences are the destruction of the entire galaxy to ascend into the Shroud. @@thorshammer7883 Speranza's reactor is part of an ark mechanicus ship known as Speranza, it appears in a book trilogy starting with Priests of Mars (novel). Speranza I believe is still operational, although its current status is likely unknown. It was created during the dark age of technology, and honestly likely for shits and giggles just as much as for utilitarian purposes. The humanity from that period was for lack of a better word fucking crazy and was inventing some really dark and dangerous shit. The funny thing is that the ship isn't being controlled by anyone, it's likely simply follows directions because of boredom, its machine spirit is quite frankly some galaxy-brain singularity ai that looks at modern 40k humans like they are insects and only helps them so they fuck off and stop bothering it. Yeah, but it would require me to actually search for it, which I honestly don't wanna do. I recommend reading the series anyway, it's a great trilogy and it features some of the best high sci-fi weapons and tolls in all of 40k.

Great video! There are some questions and inconsistencies in here though they are a bit nit-picky as the video is informational and entertaining. I do wonder about the Gloriana-class. I wonder where you get the information that the Macragge's Honour was the second largest one, after the Invincible Reason. From what I've heard the biggest one is the Iron Warrior's Iron Blood. This is supported by the Lexicanum, where it is described as among the biggest Glorianas, with the Luna Wolves'/Sons of Horus' Vengeful Spirit, Space Wolves Hrafnkel and the World Eater's Conqueror. So neither the Macragge's Honour nor the Invincible Reason are even in this list. Second, it is a bit strange to have two entries for the Gloriana class but with three different versions? The "generic" one, IR and MH? Just include the biggest, the Iron Blood, maybe the generic one too but that's enough. Also I wonder about the omission of the Abyss-class battleship. They're described as huge, rivals to even the Phalanx (which, you know, take as you will) but aren't mentioned here? I understand fidning specific sizes for them could be difficult but that's true for many entries on this list?

I think an Abyss class battleship would dwarf a Glorianna but not to the point that they dwarf the Phalanx The Phalanx is gigantic, its a planetoid more than a station at this point, mobile at that
@Willehable
@Willehable 9 ай бұрын
@@KalashVodka175 I would too but iirc that's literally how they're described. There are two reasons for this I can see, the first being that the Abyss is smaller but a dedicated warship, while the Phalanx, despite being bigger is also a station filled with command structure, carrier capabilities, a whole Astartes chapter monastery and everything else that wouldn't be as helpful in a one-on-one battle. The second and most likely is just that the authors didn't really know what they were talking about at this early stage in the lore writing.
@fadelsukoco3092
@fadelsukoco3092 9 ай бұрын
The Macragge's Honour is described as being 26 km long in any mention I can find, and the Invincible Reason being the largest is from more recent Dark Angels lore, with it being described as the very first Gloriana built and stuffed full of archaeotech by the Emperor since he trusted the Dark Angels to handke thst shit. It is also described as having an uninterrupted internal grand processional hall that is 28 km in length alone, so the ship would be moderately longer than that. There is also a mention in one of the early books by Nathaniel Garro that the Vengeful Spirit had main lance cannons twice the size of Mortarion-s flagship, the Endurance. For context, these cannons are the long needle-like weapons stretching most of the broadside hull of the Pre-heresy Vengeful Spirit in that one image of it surrounded by a circle of smaller ships (it's unmistakable if you just look up "40K Vengeful Spirit"). And that's before the Heresy, by the end of it the ship had been refitted to have a giant additional prow section and rear engine cowling, making it even bigger. Also, in regards to the size of the Iron Blood, it's size is also inconsistent. In Angel Exterminatus, it is described as just being 15 km in length and the smallest of the Glorianas because Perturabo thought it was kind of stupid to put so much resources into such massive singular ships and wanted to be more utilitarian, while the Forge World numbered HH books, it is described as 20km long with the familiar visual of it compared to ships like the Tribune and Contrador.
@Willehable
@Willehable 9 ай бұрын
@@fadelsukoco3092 Yes, that is kind of what I was getting at, the sizes are inconsistent (trying very hard not to make size jokes here) as with most of the lore, especially from such an early point in the franchise. That's why I think it would be nice to have a source or mention in the video something to the effect of "In source A this ship is described as being X size, though it's different in source B, just for clarity" or even better just not mention individual ships at all and just classify the Gloriana class as a single entry. Not to mention certain things, like that just the lance cannons of a ship would be twice the size of another entire ship of the same class are to be honest, a little bit silly of the authors. I am sure you a correct, I don't have my Horus Heresy novels close for reference (only Eisenhorn and he's rudely not helpful in this matter) and don't have the previous Forgeworld books at all, so I am double checking Lexicanum. Unless it's mentioned even earlier, the size of MH is quoted as 26 km in Know No Fear (Great entry btw) which came out in 2012 and then the description that Iron Blood and the others were the biggest is mentioned in The Wolf King, which came out in 2016. So which is "correct"? Because it is so inconsistent, which I do think is stupid to begin with, I feel like it's up to the individual reader to draw their own conclusions of who to trust the most. Not saying these are the objective truth but just for reference these are the pages I was referencing/referring to: wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Iron_Blood wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Macragge%27s_Honour

The length of Italy, from the southern coast of Sicily to the Austrian border is about 1150km. From the south coast of Sicily to Stockholm there are about 2500km. You can see how authors of fantasy fiction sometimes get carried away into ludicrousness just to impress gullible readers, completely losing any sense of scale and grip on reality. This is what distinguish "Good science fiction" from Marvel style "Mine is longer then yours", or else "My dad can beat your dad" nonsense. Looking at the "Speranza Mechanicum class" you understand how badly these WH40K are written; "Spaceball One" mindset, without even understanding the implications.

The figure you have for the Ramilies, with all due respect, CANNOT be correct. Lore states that these stations require an entire smalk fleet if ships to essentually tow the thing whenever it wants to do a Warp jump, and it requires a specific formation of 16 nsvigators on the fort itself to try it. Even then, over 1500 of them were lost across the Imperium's history trying to just do routine Warp jumps. Something with just a bit more mass than an average battleship, as you suggest here, would definitely NOT require all that effort, nor would it make sense for the intended role of strategic fleet command posts and strongholds that it does. Something to the range of 25-50 km in length depending in the Starfort pattern would be far nore reasonable.
